A lot of the time religion seems largely secularised to me. Rather than facing the eternal, God, we face each other and discuss current events, hoping that God will intercede on our behalf to make things as we would like them.

Mmm ... Hard to say what's going to take place. How are we going to be able to reach folks with this new digital medium and algorithmic dynamic? I'm not sure. I find in my own life that the digital is, more or less, "everyday" and no longer special. Tangible things, though, are becoming more costly, and therefore are more prized. I can access the daily office on my phone, and can even get the old Roman Liturgies automatically formatted for me ... but ... gosh it's just not the same as holding the BCP in my hands, or flipping through a good breviary (I'm saving up for the Anglican Office Book for this reason). I wonder what's going to be most meaningful and helpful for the next generation (I'm in my early 30s, and teach college students, so I'm not that old, but I'm old enough to feel the changes).

There’s a book entitled “Ever ancient, ever new “ that describes the situation in which some young people find themselves and what they long for. I’m not a “young person“ but I have found that book to resonate with my own experience. I longed for something that was older than me. (grew up evangelical/Pentecostal) longed for something more beautiful, etc. My husband, as a Pentecostal, obtained a PhD in Liturgics, and we eventually moved into the Anglican church where he is our priest. We call it a deeper conversion. Our parish, which is only four years old, has a good range of ages, but we do find younger people and young families looking for some thing that will give them a rule of life. The daily office and the regular rhythm of the liturgy seems to scratch where they itch. Most have come from evangelical backgrounds.

It does indeed seem our prayers become less and less to God, and more and more happy thoughts about God we share to each other. I have found at times being in services where someone was called upon to lead a prayer, it seemed like the person used it more as a time to air their opinions, than really give supplication. But I don't think this is new, for I have a reproduction of a 1599 Geneva bible that has sections for prayers, and whereas the prayer book has a 90/10 ratio, the genevan prayers are more 10/90. Sola scriptura indeed. Lord have mercy.

I find the Geneva Bible folk who claimed that the Bible is self-explaining to be a bit of a joke. But it did encourage James I/VI to insist that such notes would not occur in the AV.
