Sometimes, there’s no way to avoid CDs - either an album has never been released on vinyl or in other cases, the lone vinyl release is rare, extremely limited, and price prohibitive. What to do? If you love the music - you buy the CD and push play. Today I’m highlighting some of my favorite CDs and showing off my latest piece of vintage gear that I've added to my stack.

Had a guy who worked during the 70’s up through the mid 90’s as an audio engineer. The way he put it, they’d have killed for something with the technical specs of the CD. Get a quality player with a quality master, it will set you up pretty nicely. Just like records or any physical media, the quality of the master and the quality of the equipment are really what are reflected of your walls.

There is nothing wrong with a compact disk, if they're mastered correctly. I feel they are just as good if not better than a good pressings of an vinyl LP, definitely last longer. I got a ton of audiophile gold cds, some of them are really impressive, about as good as they get! A really good DVD player will play CDs perfectly and they put out a really fantastic sound too, some just as good if not better than most CD players out there.

The CD is essentially a digital storage medium. It stores what you put on it. Some early CDs were made with poor second generation masters. They were also transfered with poor quality early AD converters. And the early CD players had poor DA converters. Of course "good master" can be subjective. Which is whole nother topic all together.

I agree. Sometimes a CD release which I can find for around 13 eur beat 30 eur vinyl in terms of mastering and quality of sound. When CD or vinyl are released or reissued by the same label, they sound practically the same. But with vinyl there is more interesting process during a playback. Sometimes not so interesting when a stylus skip.:)

@@peterregorsek1504 It's the warped and off center pressing that are a pain, a lot more these days than I remember during the 1970s and 80s, even in the audiophile pressings. I got the Amy Winehouse, 2LP 1//2 speed mastered at Abbey Road studios,180gr virgin vinyl of "Back to Black" recently and when I ordered it I had to order it 3 separate times. All three times one of the LPs were warped and two of the times, one of the LPs had an off center hole in one of the vinyl LPs. The one I decided to keep is warped just a little bit but playable. If I hadn't liked the album so much I wouldn't have kept it. Sign of the times I guess. ((:

Tim, so glad you posted this video. It absolutely makes perfect sense these days to sometimes opt for the CD. This hobby of collecting vinyl has become big business these days with expensive boxsets and RSD with it’s crazy limited edition releases. My pockets aren’t deep enough to buy every single release on vinyl. I’m always looking for sales and still buy used in the bargain bin section, which I’ve been fortunate to find some gems. I’ll go for the affordable CD option when it makes sense. For instance Lee Morgan’s Complete Live At The Lighthouse and more recently Tom Petty Live At The Fillmore. Yesterday I received David Bowie “Moonage Daydream” 2 CD set which is the soundtrack to the recent film. I only saw a CD option and jumped on it. It sounds incredible! BTW I also have that Paul Westerberg CD and still sounds great. In my home analog and digital can happily co-exist. 😊

I also want to add that there are plenty of CD only releases from many talented artists that for one reason or another could not get a vinyl pressing. In 2022 there is a shortage of pressing plants that can’t meet the demand. Therefore that’s a big part of why there are limited edition vinyl releases. For less fortunate independent artists the cost of releasing their music on vinyl is a big expense that likely won’t turn a profit. So, it makes financial sense to either do the digital album or release it on compact disc. Then there are albums that were released during the heyday of CDs that were never pressed on vinyl. So if you love music and not just collect vinyl because it’s the current trend, then owning a CD player is essential.

I have that Rotel CD player! Got it new in 93! Mine is the RCD965-BX.Looks exactly like yours . I use it with my vintage Harmon Karden reciever and run the Rotel through a Denafrips DAC. Still an amazing performer. But yeah...vinyl is so much sweeter. My turntable rules over my system! If you want to improve the performance of CDs, run them through an upgraded DAC. Its quite an improvement and gets it "closer" to vinyl (soundstage, smoothness, warmth).

Congrats on your CD player acquisition. Does the player have a coaxial digital output on the back? If so, you could run a cable to a newer DAC and use your player as a CD transport. Then run RCAs to your Mac. I did this with a 1991 Luxman CD player using a Cambridge Audio DAC Magic. Some food for thought for later. Enjoy your new player👍👍

If you really love music, then you must have a CD player, whether you have a turntable or not. As others have said, vinyl is now really expensive - if you love to explore music, it makes more sense now to buy CDs than ever before. Not every hifi fanatic is really into music - daft as that sounds, but every hifi forum has guys of a certain age with a fantastic turntable and some lousy LP propped beside it! Yes folks, it was a dog in 1974, it's even more of a dog in 2022. I'm of an age where I clearly remember the pain of buying vinyl in the 70s and 80s - bad pressings, new discs with scratches, warped, dished, dishonest descriptions, discs that looked fine but sounded awful, bent or split sleeves, etc etc - aaagh! It was a real blessing when CDs appeared. Now people are having the same issues with vinyl all over again, only this time its costs £30 for the headache rather than £3. Just to be trendy? So I have a great CD player - and I buy CDs all the time, new and secondhand, it's great I can explore to my heart's delight. Oh by the way, I never sold any of my vinyl collection... because I didn't like being told what to do then anymore than I do now. And my Technics 1210 - which hifi snobs used to turn their noses up at - is now recognised as the great turntable it really is. I remember Ken Kessler reviewing one in the 90s and being amazed by it - good old Ken, always happy to go out on a limb.

Totally agree. I was 100% vinyl listening and did not even own a CD player until about 6 months ago when I found a Sony CDP-970 at Goodwill for $10 (I had no idea if it was good or not, but the reviews were positive so I thought I'd add it to my system just for fun). The first album I put on was Styx - The Grand Illusion. It sounded just as good as my $30 Japanese pressing on my $700 turntable and I paid $.25 for it at a local book/music store! Unbeknownst to me at the time, that CD was an A&M Audio Master Plus Series pressing. That totally sent me down the CD rabbit hole. Like you were saying, used CDs are so much cheaper than used vinyl as prices for the latter have skyrocketed. I have some vinyl albums that sound better than their CD counterparts and then some CDs that sound better. It taught me not to sleep on CDs and made me excited to find quality, bargain music again while vinyl prices have continued to get out of reach.

Nice video as usual Tim 👍 I still use a CD player regularly as well as a good quality Yamaha cassette deck. The CD is convenient for background listening -as well as music with a very big dynamic range such as classical/ambient etc. Or when I can`t be bothered to attend to the record deck 🙂 The cassette can come into it`s own for a lot of 1980`s/90`s releases which often had bonus tracks included due to the extra running time tape allowed over vinyl. Back to vinyl for the 80`s 12 inch singles though with all the extended re-mixes. As so much music from around the mid to late 80`s onwards was being recorded and mastered digitally it`s worth just getting the CD if a vinyl version wasn`t originally available . Any re-issue put out now would likely be way over-priced and not analogue anyway...but at least you get decent artwork/liner notes etc. I`ve yet to see a youtube vid on how new album releases (digitally recorded) are tweaked (if at all ) for the vinyl LP . Many newer artists of course have no vinyl issues at all and you have a choice of just download/streaming or CD

If you have a decent transport and DAC, it is not a given that a vinyl alternative will sound better than the CD. I’ve got the Westerberg album you mention and prefer the CD. Some DVD-A and SACD offerings are even better. I find that many new vinyl offerings don’t have the dynamics of the original vinyl releases. True, the vinyl is often better with less surface noise, but if that is all you are getting, why not use a digital version? If you strive to find the best sounding recordings, you are going to have a mixed bag of formats and there is nothing wrong with that.

That is a very nice CD player Tim! Nothing at all wrong with it. And yes, there are *NUMEROUS*t instances where honestly having the vinyl is either prohibitive or not preferable. Case in point, the latest Jack White album (and I really like him) was surprisingly rather poor sounding on vinyl. However, also surprisingly, the Hi-Res FLAC version I have does indeed sound considerably better! I'm finding after 40+ years of collecting vinyl, that my very recently purchased DAC (a very humble SMSL DO200) is actually saving me a *LOT* of money. I have probably around 7000+ lossless FLAC albums on my HDDs, and now I can play all of them on my main system. There are MANY cases now where, even though I consider myself an Audiophile and very much prefer vinyl on my system, still, there are numerous cases where I simply do not have to get the vinyl. So, very good point made here sir! BTW, if you are into Rush (I saw the nice Permanent Waves behind you) the UK R.A.Y.E.S. pressing of this album is quite a bit better sounding than the US pressing. I got one in trade from another fellow on the Steve Hoffman Forums. It honestly sounds amazing! I thought I'd mention that in case you are a real fan of the album 😊

@@Universityofvinyl You are THE ultimate collector sir! 😁 The tough one is COS. It was one of my very rare bouts of obsessive insanity (and before I knew as much as I have learned in the last few years, especially on the Hoffman forums) I bought a 1st German, a first Dutch, and a US Truetone pressing. I already had a run of the mill US pressing. I also bought the 2015 Remaster. THEN... I found this fellow in Texas who was getting rid of all his very high end equipment and vinyl. Since the provenance of this album is very murky and mysterious, he assured me that he had a genuine 1st US pressing that he guaranteed would sound great or he'd give me my money back. And yep, THAT was the one 😊 But, this album is very, very hard to zero in on who did what because the deadwax and information is mostly missing. Sorry to go on, but thought you might find that interesting. Truly the only time I kind of went off the deep end there for a moment. FWIW, if you want the best sounding pressings of 2112 and A Farewell to Kings, the ones with the 'JAMF' in the deadwax, either US or Canadian are the good ones. And, as you likely already know, the plentiful Moving Pictures with the 'RL' in the deadwax sound amazing. I have a 1st Dutch double 'RL' that sounds great! The 1st US of Signals and Power Windows are both very good. The only 2015 Remasters that I would recommend would be Presto because the 1st pressing is rather bright, and Pressure/Grace, which on my system is slightly better than the original. If you like Vapor Trails, make SURE to get the later remix because even they admitted that they screwed up the sound on the original. The 2-LP Remaster of Counterparts is also quite good if you can find it at a decent price. I was very fortunate and stumbled across a SHF member who was offering both Counterparts and the 2-LP pressing of Test of Echo, both like new for $65 😊 That was a lucky one! Oh, and the first 2 albums are also kind of hard to figure out along with COS. Usually the Gilbert Kong (GK) are very good, but they can vary. If you can find a nice clean set of the Archive albums, their first 3, that may be the way to go.

The problem with some vinyl re-issues is that they do not use the original master tapes, but actually just use the CD for their vinyl master. Or worse yet, they re-master the original source. A great example is the original soundtrack to Raiders of the Lost Ark. The 2-LP reissue is good, but does not have sound of the original, which has far better sonics and imaging. That's what re-mastering does, it puts people not involved in the original mix in charge.

If the album was recorded to digital media in the studio/live, then go with the digital disc (CD/SACD/DVD-A/BluRay) IMO< it's silly to get vinyl version for material recorded to digital from the mics. For 100% all analog material, ie recorded from the mics to analog tape, mixed and mastered analog, then vinyl makes sense. Of course, most albums recorded since the early/mid 80s were recorded to digital. So unless you want to pass on most albums produced in the past 35+ years, vinyl absolutists are stuck pre 1980-85, though that might not be a bad thing ;)

I mean it's the same thing with record players, I mean if you bought a cheap crosley's record player and you played records on it you would say to yourself man record s suck they sound terrible. though if you go and spend good money on a good record player you're going to get great sound and it's the same thing with CD players

I have Amazon Music HD and all I have to do is verbally request any artist or album and it plays. There have only been two requests that were not in their library. I have really tried to stump them but they always come thru. I don't know about other music services because Amazon is my only service and they are excellent. Amazon Music HD is expensive, but to me it is worth every penny. Before I started using Amazon Music HD I had purchased a Marantz CD6006 player and now it just sits unused. I haven't used it in a couple of years because Amazon Music HD fullfils all my musical needs. It has basically made playing CDs obsolete. The musical quality from HD is head and shoulders above that of CDs.

What "previous " copies? One of those albums that I just never got around to buying. As to what I "get" out of it, you have to listen to a properly done SACD on a dedicated player in order to understand the limitations of PCM. I've had my Yamaha SACD player for a year, I was using my OPPO, but proper SACD on a decent player is quite the experience. Especially the human voice, sounds like they're in the room with you

Give up moaning about CD, just play the music and dig the whole social spectrum. I've listened, heard music in some of the most un-audiophile situations and just loved it! All music has a context which isn't musical but is essential...

Been collecting vintage disc players for years now. I have the Rotel RCD-855 like new with box/remote Lots of good disc players at thrift in recent years. If you are using an external DAC and are a bits are bits guy, BuRay players or DVD players with HDMI/coax/optical outs are great transports. Many early 2010's BluRay players and mid 2000's DVD players do SACD and/or DVD-A in addition to CD/DVD-V, and include HDMI+coax+optical+analog outs all on the same unti. I would disagree re: disc changers, though. Never really liked those 100+ disc changers- never loaded the one I had in the 90s with more than 5-10 discs, then would forget what's in there. I do like carousel 5 disc changers. Form factor no larger HxW than single disc players. Recently scored a 6 disc Integra carousel, never knew there were >5 disc carousels. At worst, a belt or two may need to be changed in a carousel, no worse than a single drawer player, unless a gear is broken. Made in Japan Pioneer, TEchnics and others from the late 80s through early 90s before manufacturing was moved out of Japan are a sweet spot for vintage CD. Early model DVD/SACD/DVD-A players from the late 90s/early 2000's are also made in Japan or Korea

I spent $5 for a Kenwood DP-47 CD player from a Goodwill outlet. No remote. Whatever. Circa ? Never looked. Sounds fine to me. I do run it through a rather modest system. "Modest" speaks to the relativity theory. You have nice shit.

If it is rock then a CD is fine for me. Unless the digital mastering is horrible I find the vinyl unnecessary. And a good chance the vinyl is digitally sourced so what's the point? Some (a lot of ) people are buying the vinyl just for the packaging and hip factor.

Welcome back to the dark side😇...and maybe a name change to the University of Music. By the by, if the Rotel gives out, a friend in the industry used to use an Oppo blu-ray player, but during the pandemic, he was forced to sell it. He just bought a Panasonic DP-UB820 which he swears sound better than the Oppo did (unfortunately, he paid $500 a few months ago...I see it now sells for $400.)

1:12 - uh, you're going to download the vinyl rip? Hello? It's current year. You don't need to buy anything. What the hell is going on? Did everyone forget that we have perfect digital copies in this era? I think vinyl people have a problem and just, for some reason, need to physically touch things. You don't have to pay money to listen to great albums at great quality. These people are withholding information from you. These people on youtube don't tell you that you can DOWNLOAD STUFF. You don't have to go to a store or order anything online, ACTUALLY. It's ACTUALLY all free. $0

there is no compact disc situation, tons of music available in classical , literally . getting a vinyl version of your cd , and a used one at that , it wears from first play . there are extremely good pressings on cd , some not so good , the same is true with vinyl. instead of going cheap . try Esoteric cd or McIntosh cd , you will hear a major difference that will stun you. if you confine your shopping to e bay or discogs , it will always be , less than good . why would you want to avoid cd's , need to improve your equipment , spend some money
