Over the years, the role of Garuda has changed in quite significant fashion. Starting out as a boss and random encounter, Garuda has since transitioning into being a Summon and is set to play an important role in Final Fantasy XVI.

It's funny how Garuda has become the most common recurring wind summon instead of something like Typhon or Pandemona/Pandemonium.

I think the bird motif might have helped. Birds have always been associated with wind, so Garuda's avian design gave it a better chance than the other candidates.

Typhon definitely has more history as an enemy than as a summon. The only mainline game where you can summon him, wind isn't even one of his elements! But it isn't that hard to be the most recurring wind summon, because most games that have one make up their own. Sure, Fenrir was a recurring summon when it showed up in IX, but that was the only time it was a wind summon, and part-time at that, and Chaos was a recurring character when it appeared as XII's wind summon, but no one was going to take from a set of references to past final bosses to become a standard summon. Pandemona is notable for never havig been anything _other_ than a wind summon, but Pandemona also just never reappeared outside of mobile games, and the closest it came to anything else was being cut from Type-0.

Pandaemonium being recurring wouldn't work because Pandaemonium is also a recurring area in FF games and it'd weird to have them both coexist together since a wind elemental has little to do with the prison-like dark themed pandaemonium in all games its featured in. People that haven't played FF8 prob dont even know the summon version exists. Garuda is more prominent throughout the franchise compared to those. Plus being a bird helps. The name Garuda being from hindu like other mainstay summons such as Shiva also helps.

Garuda just magically elevated herself to being an iconic summon and she's only been a summon in 4 games, with FFXVI being the 4th

It's weird. If I didn't know better I'd swear she has always been there. It just makes sense to have a wind summon, and I can't think of a better candidate than Garuda. Add to that the strong showing in FFXIV, and I'm not even surprised FFXVI just takes it for granted.

Honestly I think it was 14 that really shot her to the limelight, along with the 15 cross over event I feel that’s what put her into the summon bracket permanently

Wind/Air (element) in general, has been underrepresented in Final Fantasy. The spells usually look awesome; but don’t always have great use (like Tornado being a spell to cause the critical state).

What the Garuda in FFVII is holding is not so much a generic rod as it is specifically a Tibetan Vajra Club. Which aligns with the idea that they are meant to be thunder-deitys. Kind of a cool easy-to-miss element that they added to Garuda's character design in VII.

That's really cool! But Garuda is a wind based summon, Ramuh was the lighting based summon. Also, Garuda was one of the most used summons in FFXI, due to the fact she could cast haste on the entire party.

I love her in ff15. She was the one who saved my butt the most. Everyone else just sat on their butts during the game. As a persona fan, I am familiar enough with the lore since it is a common persona to get during the games. It was fun to learn more in relation to ff series.

I'm pretty sure that she replaces Ramuh once you get her, since before getting Garuda Ramuh appeared a lot and hasn't appeared since I got Garuda. I've seen Siren a bunch of times, but I think she only bothers to show up after the main game is done. I've seen Leviathan a few times. I never have seen Titan.

@iainrobb2076 interesting. That may make sense. Although he didn't show up before her either, he may not like me. 🤷 beside the story point, I got him to show up twice. Titan hated me more...he show once the entire game.

@@jennyf-eg5gl Ramuh showed up for me a lot. Apparently, Titan has two animations, and one pops up if you do the Adamantoise hunt. I may start that off with the Magitek armour, then see if I can escape it, because there's no way I'm seriously attempting that fight.

Garuda i view as one of the iconic elemental summons in the series. Ifrit: Fire Shiva: Ice Ramuh: Thunder Titan: Earth Garuda: Wind Leviathan: Water Alexander: Holy Odin: Death Bahamut: Neutral

It is weird for the longest time the wind element did not have a specific summon. It always bounced around to a few until Garuda really took it in 11.

FF5 had Syldra. FF7 had Chocobo and half of Odin as its Wind summon. FF8 had Pandemonia, which itself is a FFII reference. FF9 had Fenrir, with the right accessories. And I suppose the Sylphs have been kind of wind-based for a couple games. But Garuda showed up as a summon in FF11 and hasn’t stopped.

It's my hope that Garuda becomes a mainstay Summon archetype for the franchise from now on. After being a name they could slap on any large avian monster design for most of FF's history, since XI they've worked to give it a strong visual identity and thematic concept which I think is as good as an Ifrit or a Shiva.

"In game X, Garuda is weak to Wind. Then in game Y, as a reference to X, Garuda has an affinity for Wind. In game Z, Garuda has an affinity for Earth, in reference to X where she was immune" You keep using these words, but I don't think they mean what you think they mean...

I had no idea Garuda as a summon was a more recent thing, my first Final Fantasy was XIV, then VII, then XV, then XVI, so I guess it makes sense that Garuda is one of my favourites of the summons... XIV Garuda just carries such a cool aura it's hard to ignore her

That's one of the best fights in the game. And the sword you unlock that lets you stay airborne basically indefinitely makes every other end game fight so much better.

Quick correction, Sword of Mana wasn't the sequel to Seiken Densetsu, it was the name of its GBA remake. The first sequel to Seiken Densetsu was _Secret_ of Mana. Also, the Garuda from Crisis Core looks like it's a variant of a different bird from the original FFVII, the Needle Kiss found around Mt. Corel.

Its interesting how XI's design got baton passed over to XIV and from there spring boarded into one of the most recognizable Final Fantasy icons next to the likes of Ifrit and Shiva. Goes to show the power of a little thirst, but it certainly works.

I always loved her XI model ^^ she had other really strong support movies as well, providing AoE Blink & Haste to the party. She was weak to Ice because in XI Ice beats Wind on the elemental wheel (I always had my suspicions but I never did confirm the Mana devs worked on it - explains a hell of a lot) In fact I always felt 11 was the closest thing to a Mana MMO we'll ever get and now I know why ! Oh, you guys forgot to mention her crossover event between 14 and 15.

Nor shall I forget her XI model. Younger me was a big fan of her thighs and rear sailing gracefully through the air. I think the expanded elemental wheels in the MMO's saved her and gave her a permanent and excellent place.

FF15 is my favourite too, it was iconic, but if they have to go forward with one, i think id choose the one from FF14, just because the idea of having a crazy maniac lady bird seems to open more ideas compared to a smirk guy bird Dont get me wrong, the one from 15 is still my favourite, i think he's hot 😌

Garuda just emanates the appearance of the representative of Wind, wearing that role like a glove aside the rest of those within the elemental circle. Sylph was smol like Carbuncle, Fenrir is a doggo, I see wolves being more ice related, and Pandemona probably looked too alien, though, I wouldn't mind seeing Pandemona take up a role as 2ndary wind representative like Phoenix does for fire.

11's Garuda was always a favorite for Summoners at the 75 endgame. Mostly due to her Predator Claws physical bloodpact, more so when her three hits crit, which is more reliable than the other avatar's physical abilities. Fenrir a close second, and Shiva's Rush third, in my experience. Prior to Endwalker's update for summoner, Garuda-Egi great for AoE use. And even then, before removing Egi's as pets and targetable, she would be second to Ifrit egi for dps, while titan-egi was the, tank type. Watching 16 streams so far. They really, zoned in on 14's personality traits, in addition to appearance upgrades, when compared to her evolution from 11 to 14, which to say, those of us whom adorable the bird lady, are well fed.

Syldra will always be my favorite Wind Summon, but I think I prefer that they were only in Final Fantasy V. Garuda is a good choice for the recurring wind elemental.

Bonus info for FF14 (Warning: Spilers Ahead!) The form that Athena takes in the latest Pandeamonium raid is very much like Garuda in form. And given how Athenas' connection to Azys-Lla, as well Garudas' own there, it would not be surprising either Athena herself drew inspiration from Garuda. Or that the researchers there speciallizing in the aetherial sea saw Athenas form, drawing a depiction of her that later the Ixal ancestors saw while giarding the facility that stuck with them. Or... Athena and the Allagans may have made contact at one point. Whether in the aetherial sea, or with what Athena used later in Endwalker.

Other avian summons like Valefor, Quezacoatl, Sylph, Dragon(FFIV), and Diabolos(who was originally going to be added in FFXVI and have it's own Dominant, but sadly was scrapped because of the similarities to Devilman) are no match to Garuda. She went from a lesser boss to sexy bird lady in FFXIV alongside her Dominant Bernadikta in FFXVI, so Garuda definitely had the most outstanding glowup out of many summons(that includes summons such as Ifrit, Shiva, Ramuh, and Phoenix when it comes to FFXVI imo).

The weapon Garuda is holding in FF7 is the Vajra. Also relevant to Hinduism and represents lightning. Hence the use of lightning as one of it's attacks.
