My personal favorite is emerald weapon in 7. At the time, I was a final fantasy veteran (started with 4/2 on snes), while my 2 best friends at the time were playing through their first rpg together with me. We put our heads together to figure out how to kill him, and it made victory that much sweeter. Thanks for the excellent video guys!

I kinda think the "another world" criteria is a pretty needless part of the checklist. Especially when some of your superbosses are just from a much older time, and not exactly from another world. Other than the parts where you clearly have to fudge it to fit that criteria, I enjoyed the video immensely. Love superbosses. Don't beat most of them cuz I don't feel like putting in the time, but still love em.

@@Wolf-bz6kq This guide is taken from the KZfaq video "FFX: How to kill Dark Valefor with first hit (without training your Guardians and Aeons) " 1. First you need Yojimbo - bonus Aeon which you can get in a cave between Calm lands and Mt. Gagazet (look for a bridge and go under it). Tell him that you "want to kill the most powerful creatures" and pay him 250k Gils (if you don't have the money, go train to Calm Lands, Omega ruins or Cactuar village and sell all the equipment you get). 2. (optional) Use Yojimbo (ONLY) in fights where he cannot die and (ALWAYS) pay him good sums of gils (see below) - this way you will increase the chance for Zanmato (and decrease the required sum of Gils). 3. Go to Zanarkard and find the puzzle game - step on all the 7 white squares, then take the sphere from the first room and place it to the right of the screen in the second one - this will give you Magistral Rod. Equip it with Yuna and she will get first attack in every fight (also will half the cost of all spells). In HD version you must first customize it with First Strike using x1 return sphere! 4. (optional) Make sure that Yuna (or Yojimbo) have full Overdrive. This will increase the chance of Zanmato by ~25%. To keep Yojimbo's Overdrive, dismiss him right after it fills up (but NOT by paying him 0 gils!!!). 5. Go to Besaid and save on the crossroad save point (between the waterfalls and the village). Make sure Yuna is in the fighting party (use Formation and place her on top of the list), then head to the village. 6. When Dark Valefor attacks make Yuna to (Grand) Summon Yojimbo and pay him (see below how much). If he uses skill "Zanmato", it will instantly kill Dark Valefor and the fight ends. The money you pay to Yojimbo should be always (just a bit) more than a power of 2. Thus recommended sums are 8200, 16400 or 33000. If you have a lots of money, you can double the sum to increase the chance of Zanmato (66k, 132k, etc.). If you pay him 8200 you have appx. 10% chance for Zanmato, with 66k and full overdrive this chance rises to 30% ~ 50% (with 1 million and 100k you get up to 90% and 4M 200k should give you 100% but you don't need that). If Yojimbo fails to kill Dark Valefor with first hit, and you get to Game Over, load the last save, go to the village and repeat the step 6. It should not take more than 3 to 6 retries (depending on paid money and steps 2 and 4). You can use the same steps on any Dark Aeon in the game (well except for Yojimbo himself, because you must kill him 5 times and you probably won't be able to recharge Yuna's Overdrive).

Slight correction on Warmech, it's far from the only sci-fi element in the game - the dungeon it's found in, the Flying Fortress, was given a clear "space station" tileset in the original NES release, and both it and the preceding Mirage Tower dungeon are full of robot enemies.
@jedgrahek1426
@jedgrahek1426 2 жыл бұрын
Exactly, thank you. This is one of those myths that drives me nuts, that 7 and 8 were weird outliers for having technological or sci-fi elements, and that 9 was truly at all similar in tone to the original 5 games (it wasn't, except for the 4 character party and more simplified mechanics in general). FF had high technology in varying amounts from the very beginning; it was never a strict fantasy style... and the way this video talks about Warmech while omitting the entire dungeon it was in and all the other enemies in that dungeon just to perpetuate this false narrative is kind of shocking. I hope it's just ignorance, but there is such a strong emotional attachment that every playstaytion kid has who played 7 first, hated 8, and then liked 9, to believe in that narrative being a real thing, in the technology of 8 being a bad mistake and outlier... and that by playing 9 they were having a roughly equivalent experience to having played 1-5/6 or whatever. It's just plain not true, but people are so committed to it that they have these weird false views about the early games for it to make sense.

Every boss in MMOs balanced around requiring a group is a superboss compared to the single player RPGs because the most challenging thing to do in team based games is getting other random humans to coordinate. You're no longer in control of your destiny, and now rely on other players not to screw up even if you do everything 100% right. Any random final boss in a group dungeon at max level in just about any MMO is harder than any superboss in any single player Final Fantasy game by the simple virtue that they were unwinnable when you were at the mercy of bad players sabotaging the fight. I absolutely love tackling superbosses but I do not choose to recognize the MMO versions because they are handled entirely differently than any of the single player FFs and SE doesn't give you the option to tackle them solo. I don't consider the out-of-game challenge of coordinating other humans a reasonable inclusion for a superboss. By that logic, if I have to deal with things outside of the game (i.e. other actual players) to beat a boss, it's like just making any boss harder in a single player RPG by doing it blindfolded, drunk, with one hand, etc. I'm now playing the game less, with forces outside the game presenting the real challenge. But again, in the single player challenges I mentioned, you still have complete control of your outcome. I believe that should be included on the list of check boxes for a superboss. You should be 100% in control of winning or losing (barring RNG mechanics) and that only being able to contribute to the end result excludes that boss from being included on the list. For 10+ mainline FFs before their first MMO being in full control of the fight was as much of a constant theme as being harder than the final boss or being otherworldly and thus should be on the checklist of the definition. The MMOs really should have been given spinoff titles. They have a million spin off games and the MMOs could have easily been those as well. Considering how different an MMO plays compared to a single-player RPGs, games like Dissidia, Chocobo Dungeon, Crystal Chronicles, and more all deserve to be called FF (number) as much as the MMO as they're all very different from any FF not named 11 or 14 and yet they were given a spinoff title. Instead they alienated millions of players who do not wish to take part in MMOs so for many single player RPG fans, there are only 13 mainline FF games, and for good reason. They're the only games that stay true to the root of the original FF experience. Fans wanted a FF fighting game. So a fighting game with RPG elements. Did they call Dissidia "FFXI"? No they called it Dissidia which made it a spin-off. What about a strategy RPG? Another crossing of two genres. FF Tactics. They didn't call it "FF8" and make it part of the mainline series. The MMOs should have gotten the same treatment. MMO and RPG together is another crossover genre. Final Fantasy Online: Heavensword or something like that with new expansion names would have all been appropriate. But making the mistake of giving them the mainline Roman numerals pretty much just tainted the mainline game history. I'm not even an MMO hater. I met my wife through WoW after 10 years of playing and my wife had also played several years of FFXI and XIV. She still talks to her old FC in Discord daily. I absolutely recognize the MMOs as a FF games and they're damn good ones. Just not a mainline and should never have been labeled as such. Discussions about their versions of superbosses are footnotes or sidebars at best. They don't belong on the main list of superbosses because they're missing that other check box I mentioned about it being your fight alone. After 10 games with that element the definition had been established and is just as important as a superboss being harder than the final story boss. I absolutely wouldn't consider the MMO attempts at superbosses an "evolution" either as clearly they were a step backwards with a lot of the bad press they got.

Regarding Ultima and Omega weapon in FF8, there **is** context to Ultima weapon. Researchers were researching the draw system as well as GFs, and were ultimately looking at creating a new system altogether. They were specifically using Guardian Forces in their research, which explains that Ultima Weapon was a monster created through experimenting with Guardian Forces, which is why you can draw Eden from it. This makes sense because one of my biggest questions first playing FF8 as a kid was why didn't people capture/detain monsters and forcefully draw from them, much like how we hold certain animals in captivity to make use of various attributes such as Horses for developing antivenin or horseshoe crabs to harvest their blood. This explains that there was in fact research being done on this matter, and through optimizing and looking for new technology they had to flee the island because they created a super powerful monster. Given the similarity between Ultima and Omega weapon, it can be assumed they're cut from the same cloth. They also clearly reward you too. Omega's reward of a trophy is just bragging rights, but it's right at the end of the game anyway so a tangible reward isn't nearly as important as the player wouldn't have much of an opportunity to play around with it. Ultima's reward is more obvious though, you get the most powerful GF in the game and you can get 100 ultima stones from beating it which can be converted to 100 Ultima spells. Eden's biggest benefit is its long cast time, which means you can very easily max out the 255 limit on overpowering its attack, or even better you can use it in conjunction with Selphie's limitbreak to roll for "The End" skill, to instant kill any enemy in the game (or finish the current phase if it's a multi-phase boss). I used The End to finish off Ultimecia's penultimate and ultimate forms (I accidentally started rolling for it one turn early) and was able to roll it twice thanks to how much time is allotted thanks to Eden.

My favorite super boss is probably Yiazmat because I played FF 12 to death on the ps2 going through all the hunts was so much fun as well as getting all the espers. In the original NES version of final fantasy the floating fortress was in fact an orbital space system, it and the area directly before it were filled with robot type enemies and a talking to a robot NPC was necessary to access the area. Later versions have tried hard to kind of remove the technological aspects of the game and make it into a more generic fantasy setting, but yeah originally WarMECH was definitely in theme.

@@kayus83 this is the strangest take I've ever seen, I was with you until the souls-like stuff. Yes being forced to use a specific setup *can* be boring (although it can also be very interesting and rewarding depending on what that setup is and how the battle goes) but that isn't what the souls games are about at all. You learn the boss' attacks, you learn when you have openings, and then you use that knowledge to make attempts to execute all that correctly. It's not being forced to play in a specific way, it's finding the best way to apply your style.

Cerberus would be arguably good...... if you couldn't get Triple magic before even going to Timber, by the time you get him you already have access to Triple making him useless. I have seen people recently who still don't have a true grasp of junction (or triple triad) and don't realise how easy FF8 is. There is literally not 1 enemy in that game that can touch you. As a FF14 player I would argue that the Ultimate fights are the only 'true' superbosses. Savage raids and Extreme trials offer really nice rewards (gear, mounts, music), whereas Ultimate fights offer only a title and fancy glowing weapon. I think bhunivelze+ on hard mode is easily the hardest boss in Lighting Returns, and technically a superboss because he's optional (you have to defeat the other superbosses first to get him). I've beaten every single monster in the game except bhunivelze+ on hard--still stuck.
@DanielEscovedo
@DanielEscovedo 5 жыл бұрын
And that is actually a much better approach to the idea of "superbosses". I think that making an "alternative version" of the main antagonist is much more interesting than fighting some "random enemy" that has nothing to do with the game's story and lore. The concept of superbosses was always a big let down to me in FF games, even though I enjoyed defeating Ruby and Emerald Weapon I felt like it made no sense at all in the story for them to be so much more powerful than Sephiroth as the real threat to the planet was Sephiroth and not them. So in general I've always felt the concept was immersion breaking as it made no sense for such enemies to be so much more powerful than the real antagonist. Omega Weapon in Ultimecia's castle is a BIG example of this immersion breaking thing as while she's "absorving all creation" and destroying the world, there's a little creature in her castle that is more powerful than her lol...but at least Ultimecia wasn't that easy, my biggest trauma was Sephiroth because he was so feared throughout the game lore only to be perhaps the easiest final boss in the entire franchise. So, I preffer the FF13-2 and Lightning Returns approach of having difficult modes and ways to face the main antagonist in a "Harder Version Encounter" as the encounter has real meaning to the game's story and is not some rather random or nonsensical shitty encounter with a random creature that has no in-game reason to be so powerful.

@@mooboy Rock Candies up the yin-yang (fixed 200 damage to all enemies), Turtle Shell on Peach to make her a tank (will hurt her healing abilities a decent bit, but still worth it), and once you take out the Crystals (that's what the Rock Candies are for) Culex himself isn't all that difficult.

Having not played through a lot of the older games, it is neat to know that the Omega vs. Shinryu fight in FFXIV is a callback to older games. And then when you consider that Omega becomes the creator of the delta/sigma/omegascapes to introduce other FF universes into XIV, it kind of ties together it's inclusion in other games, in that it placed itself there in search of proper fighters.

Why skip XIII-2's DLC superbosses? MMO Expansions are pretty much DLC aswell. Also, the FFXV Comrades Superbosses are worth mentioning, (It's a Multiplayer expansion but you can fully play through it Solo with AI) especially the Bahamut rematches (which get increasingly more challenging mechanically and stat wise), they are in my opinion the best fights in the entire game.

I always think of Superbosses more of a post game once you beat the final boss you unlock or getting certain conditions to unlock the Superboss to get said True Ending or a post game reward for those players who beaten the main game and uses the knowledge from the playthrough they did

That's more of a demonstration of people being ridiculously good (and the battle systems not having bullshit mechanics) than it not being aimed at endgame players' expected power level.
