My 20 foot avocado trees in South FL took 7 years to produce. Had a pretty bad freeze one year that I thought killed them but they grew back from the ground up and had several trunks grow back. I had planted flowering trees next to them so the bees that loved the flowers also pollinated the avocados as they flowered around the same time. Seems to work like a charm. All grown from seed.

Here in Puerto Rico when we pick our avocados we picked them leaving small stem in them. This allows them to be fresh longer. If we want them to be ready just take stem off and it will be ready within days.

My father was great at grafting. After tying the graft together with cotton thread he melted down beeswax and coated over graft. We had plenty of beeswax due to several bee hives.

I appreciate your insight and experience Recently, I started growing a seedling - not because I want fruit, it truly was because I was bored and curious. And now I’m doing all this research. And now I’m attached to my dumb plant. I even named him. I don’t think I could graft something on to Benny. It’s like replacing my child. Maybe I’ll grow another seedling and refuse to get attached so I can clone a stranger to it. 😂

I had to pause the video to let you know that I already planned to do what you are talking about here! I just told my wife that she should contact you to find out about how to get scion cuttings to graft onto root stock I grow here in Arizona. But, I have a twist that makes it even easier! I plant my seeds directly in the ground. No transplanting needed! The disadvantage is that I have planted maybe a hundred or two-hundred seeds this way, and only got one to grow. But, I did get one to grow! Then an unprecedented hard winter withered it. (5 frosts -- 3 were hard frosts -- and 3 times we got snow! In Tucson, Arizona?!?) But, it grew! My neighbor brought me 4 plants in 1 gallon pots that I transplanted with no success. While I knew you put the belly button down, I did not know you do not cover it over fully! I cannot wait to try again. I like direct sowing because whatever actually grows must be genetically happy with my yard, right? I am so lovin' it! Also, I think of it like handing out fliers for a business; it's a number's game. What's the down side? You have to eat a lot of avocados! So, of course, there is no downside!

I thoroughly enjoyed watching this video. My wife and I tried the toothpicks in the seed method...for months...with no results. Now we have another seed in a plastic bag, wrapped in a wet paper towel. Definitely gonna share this video with her. Grafting looks really cool. Never knew that sort of thing was possible. Hi Lizard, I live in South Texas.. and I am the only one in my immediate family to successfully seed, grow and raise an Avocado Tree named Ava.. She is 2' 11/2" tall, I started growing her last Spring, and when we had the Artic Blast come through, I kept her in my garage, and now with it being warmer, my brother felt it was time for her to venture out, so I sat her on the south side of the front yard against our fence, and she is doing great.. I just wanted to thank you for helping me by your video... When at what height or age should I transplant her from her Juvenile Pot 6" across to a larger one.. We can't put her in the ground here, so she has to be placed in a mobile pot....

In Seattle we were re-zoned from an 8 to an 8b, so I'm thrilled to know I can grow those beautiful fruits here. I will check out your website and probably call you to get your expertise on what to order for my grafted trees. I buy 5-6 avocados a week and it'll be really nice to pick them from my own tree! This was by far the best video on how to grow and graft and take care of an avocado tree. Glad I found you tonight! I'll be watching more vids of yours tomorrow. Thank you. Came across a video on grafting and now discovered avocados are grown that way. It should be suitable where I am in Texas unless this year repeats lol. This should be fun to try. We have bees and several varieties of fruit growing now so avocados would make a nice addition.

Just go to your nursery and ask to get you a Fuerte. Pay them whatever they want you to pay. Plant it and look after it. Good luck. Okay... listen to this guy and buy the best mix!

Great video! I live in the Pacific NW (8b) and hope to grow some cold-hardy avocadoes as that is a staple in our home! I got a ton of very useful information from this video- especially regarding type A and type B plants. Thank you!! We are also beekeepers, so hopefully, they will take care of pollination...I did want to mention that all pollinating bees are "she", not "he" (your terrific animation referred to the bees as "he"). Hives are 90% female workers. There is typically 1 queen and about 10% of the population are male drones...but they do not collect pollen, nectar,...nor do they sting. They certainly have their useful contribution to the hive, but not to farmers looking for pollination. :)

I think you are right about just planting the seed I did this, it hasn't grown yet, but it has strong roots. I'm in Qatar so is very hot and although the plant is in the shade I feel is just to hot to grow a healthy plant. Thank you for the video and for the time you took to teach us.

This biggest question I ask myself, quite often is... Why DON'T I live in a climate, where Avocado's can be grown.... whether or not I even attempt to grow them! LOL I could live anywhere I want, but I'm here in the cold! This is a really good video... I appreciate your explanations!

From south africa 🇿🇦. Bud your vids didn't just inspire me to grow a few trees.... you inspired me to convert all the un used space on my farm to mango, avo and macca. We have a couple hundred macadamia seedlings almost ready to start grafts (going to do around 5 a week till I'm happy with the success rate of the grafts then will take on larger numbers) I've taken around 50 mango fruit from an unknown tree but just need them for the seed (haven't decided what type of mango we will grafts on but will likely try a few different types)

I planted a seedling and watered it ~ period. Maybe once a year I used a fertiliser spike. Beautiful tree, lots of delicious Avocado's 🥑

Thank you Sir for your Information, here in Bavaria (south of Germany) I don’t think that l’m capable of growing avocado trees, but you know I could try. At the moment I have 4 fig trees which I keep in the cellar with a grow light. I started only this year because I became a pensioner. I got a lot of problems with the pests on my fig tree. But yeah I would like to grow avocado trees, I don’t think that I will have much success. But if at first you don’t succeed, try, try again. Hi from Puerto Rico. I have 3 avocados. The older one has been given delicious avocado. and 2 small ones are on my balcony. I make my own compost and that's is what I use. Before hurricane maria came the older tree gave me around a hundred avocado and then it stop given avocado. Last winter I started to put around the roots the coffee but the liquid coffee that is to throw out with Epsom-Salt and this summer it started to give a few avocados. I'm disabled but I learned how to grow many things.

Please don’t ask me for the variety or the tree the graft came from but we still got 6 normal sized avocados . Now the tree is getting taller and a lot of shoots coming and hopefully we might have more avocados. I bought the plant from a nursery in Sydney and I am in Melbourne. I hope things will go well. My Avocado plant is doing surprisingly well, especially since it's Autumn time, it's been growing more leaves so can't wait to plant it outside when it gets bigger 😊

I remember as a kid after I was done with mango,peach,aguacates, what ever fruit I was eating. I would throw it on away on and empty lot and next year I would be a little tree . I never had to do any thing to it ,water and sun would do all the work

Thank you for the all great tips. You are very-very good in this demonstrations. I m lucky to live in avocados farms country. At here, I can have great Hass and quite cheap from groceries stores all year. I started my grafting citrus (mandarins on lemon or kaffir) since last year and hands pollinating cherimoyas.. nothing better than spending time in the garden during lockdown..stay save everyone.

Are the seeds in commercially grown fruit rarely viable? I’ve only ever been able to get one store bought seed to germinate no matter what method I try. It’s a lovely 16” tall currently! Greetings from Denver! Love the energy and details you share!
