Very in-depth, probably the most in-depth analysis of this module on the internet. It was valuable to see the actual model number of the original design in this video (hx-3s-fl25a-a), because the module I was using was completely nameless, but identical, so it was hard to find info on it.

Very nice video , I have used these boards for a few battery packs I build 2 years ago. They haven't failed me yet. I have the version you are holding at 6:35 and the battery terminals have a metal plate on them so you can spot weld nickle strips to them instead of soldering wires. It's set up so the strips line up perfectly to the cells to keep the strips short. I paid about $3 USD for each in a pack of 3. Very cheap.

2.3v is very low for over discharge protection. I've been trying to find a cheap board like this, but with higher discharge protection voltage (like 2.7-3v), but all of them seem to go so low that I'm worried for the lifespan of the battery
@WattHour
@WattHour 2 жыл бұрын
The discharge value is determined by the manufacturer. if they say, it will be okay.
@ForwardGuidance
@ForwardGuidance Жыл бұрын
@@BAMB00STER4EVER Exactly! 2.3 is way too low for most 18650s and all of these cheap boards have the same specs. I connected 3 batteries too a board similar and one cell is dead since it let it go way low. Another thing I did was put 2 low 3.4 (ish) voltage cells with a one that was 4.0v and it overcharged the 4.0v cell rather than stop charging it while the other cells caught up.

Excellent video. I have noticed that some BMS boards have a temp sensor input.Can you elaborate on it’s application?
@firepower9966
@firepower9966 Жыл бұрын
its actually a normally close temperature switch. it go open circuit when it temp rating is exceed. (usually 40C) this will also cause the main mosfet to turn off. after it cools the switch will again close and circuit will resume normal operation. If board does not come with temp switch one can be added but you need to remove the zero ohm resistor that is used to bypass the missing temp switch. it usually next to where temp switch is soldered.

11:03 OC is not Over-Current protection output, but an Over-CHARGE output, which turns the MOSFET off to stop charging once the battery reaches a certain voltage. Also, I have a BMS board (actually a protection board) which has its P- (negative output for the LOAD) taken from the Drain pins of the MOSFETS.

How to unplug the load from batteries while the charger power supply is on and we need to power on the load from the initial power supply? How to commence the charging only if voltage dropped to a precise value? For example I don't want to get my batteries charging everytime, but after a certain discharge (voltage drop)? Thanks

So for some reason on my BMS and I have 3 brand new ones when I hook them up the voltage on the pack reads 12.50volts but on the B- B+ it reads 11.50v everything has been hooked up to balance wires and when I test the balance plug each series of cells reads 4.15v so the only thing that’s not the correct voltage is the bms. Can I move the wire from B- to the 0v side of the board? When I do that it reads the 12.50v but I’m not sure if this is bypassing the bms or not.

Thanks for the great explanation we needed. Just a small question, as this has overcurrent protection threshold about 200mV, if they add 0.025 ohm(two 0.05 Ohm resistor in parallel) resistor in series , the threshold overcurrent voltage should reach at 8A, then how does this provide 40A or more?
@simonilett998
@simonilett998 5 ай бұрын
From what I understood, he mentioned the 40A current limit refers to either, (but I'm not sure which) the max charging input current, or the max charging current the module can deliver to the batteries, not the final module maximum output current, but I may be wrong on that. 8A you mentioned sounds more realistic, however, from memory, he did show the mosfets rated at 63A, so perhaps the max module output of 40A is reasonable.

Nice explanation on this topic. I have a question however: I'm using one of these managers to assist a pack of four batteries (4S) to feed a 14.4 cordless drill. There is a problem, the overcurrent (short) protection trips every time I pull the drill trigger. I wonder if I solve it by shorting the current sampling resistors (and shutting down the overcurrent protection) or there is a better solution for that. Could you please advise?

I have been playing with a knock-off set of 18/20 V Dewalt batteries. Dewalt seems to have the charging BMS in the charger rather than the battery pack. They have individual cell voltages as well as the main connections in the connector. When it is in the tool, there is no overcurrent protection such as there is in the BMS. Having the BMS in the charger cuts costs, for the sack of a more complex connector. The video illustrates just how complex lithium batteries are and the real danger of not charging them properly. There have been a number of house fires locally due to charging scooter batteries. The Dewalt battery pack has 5 pairs of parallel cells in series. So the BMS works with a pair of cells rather than one.

Try adding a 10-100uF capacitor across the output terminals it should help with the starting current.

Hi. I have also a 3s bms but the output is less than the supplied voltage when measuring from the P+ & P-. Does it mean, one of the mosfet is dead? I noticed this issue with few bms I have used before after using for some time. I am curious what could be the problem. thanks

Hi, you are welcome. you can't comment more. this is for 3S and if you connect more than 3, it will burn.

Where do you get the documentation for the device marking codes? That is also a hard task to achieve.

I realize your video is now over 3 years old but I still have questions. You showed three cells charged to the max and then applied 17 volts to show over voltage protection. I'm wondering what would happen if you applied this same voltage to a drained battery pack. Would the individual cells accept a charge at this point? Is there an internal voltage regulator that would drop it from the 17 volts to the appropriate levels for charging and then cutoff at maximum charge? And what happens if one of the cells is internally shorted such as the middle battery in this case? Would the BMS still manage to charge the remaining two batteries? Would it simply cutoff all charging? Your individual battery volt meters, are they going to read correctly if the middle battery was shorted internally?

I think the T terminal is where you connect a temperature, sensor such as a thermocouple, and does not act as a test point.

well detailed information. if i use this then i wont need dc to dc lm2596 step down buck converter right?? cause m using it to charge me 12v 9a lead acid battery using 20w solar panel and with full sun light it gives 19v dc. so if i directly connect the solar panel in this 3s 40amp bmc will it auto step down and charge and auto cut after battery fully charge?? plz plz reply

Much appreciate you making this lesson. Great for a beginner like myself. Can i ask. If i want to use a .Solar blanket + Solar charge controller. to charge the 12v 18650. Because the solar can go up/down in current. Would the devices @22:38 still be good to limit current?
@WattHour
@WattHour 2 жыл бұрын
Hello, I mentioned that this module does not control the minimum current. it can only prevent the maximum which I mentioned and don't remember the value. Each battery has different maximum value and it you don't control it, it will reduce the life of battery and possibly cause fire due to charge over heat. So you should have a something that controls the current and you set your maximum current there before it comes to this.

Thanks for the video. I am still struggling on what type of charger I should use for a 3S 6P Panasonic NCR18650B with a 3S/10A BMS. I have a 12V/3A & a 16.8V/3.3A charger, which charger is more efficient/suitable to charge the pack?
@WattHour
@WattHour 3 жыл бұрын
you can use this for 3S. the parallel does not matter. input I forgot what was in the video but it can be I think 15V or watch the video. the 6p means 6 cells are in parallel. so voltage does not change. it just adds the capacity. so it will last longer and it will get charger in longer time.

Fantastic explanation of the BMS and step by step review of the BMS features. Really it has given me the knowledge about the BMS. I wish to change the Ni-cad cells of my cordless drill to Lithium - ion batteries. The voltage of my cordless drill is 12 V. What are the requirements for this conversion and the electronics involved in doing so. Also kindly enlighten me that is it possible to use a BMS for a 3sand4p set-up of lithium ion battery. If so what's the procedure for it and the charging parameters, such as supply volt and current, then the BMS Board to be used. Your reply will help many people who are afraid to convert their drills, and toys having Ni-cad cells to lithium ion batteries. Hope to see your guidance soon.

I am glad you found it useful. converting this module is impossible. as I mentioned each chip is made for specific voltage and you can't change it. may be we can add components to make it work but it won't be fully automatic. as for 3S4P, when you connect 2 or 3 battery in parallel, this module will see them as ONE. except the capacity increases. But series will change the voltage and it won't work. it will kill the module.

@@WattHour Thank you so much for immediate attention and response. Now I am clear that altering the ni-cad cells based drilling machines or for that matter is not possible with lithium ion batteries and BMS. That's why people show only the single cells with BMS.

@@WattHour His drill is 12volts. A 3S pack charged is 12.6volts. The voltages are correct so why won't it work? Do these drills draw more than the 40A rating of these BMS boards? An electric motor usually just runs slower with less voltage so I would think the pack would work until you got down to the low voltage cut off limit for cell protection. I've purchased four empty 12.6volt battery boxes from Ali Express. These come in kits and include 18650 holders, the nickel strips and a BMS rated at 20A or 40A that's exactly like ones in your photos. Some of the kits use a 3S7P configuration while the others use a 3S10P (3 series X 10 parallel) configuration. Your video made it clear that there's no way these BMS boards can balance charge any more than 3 cells! Ali Express has a lot of vendors selling on their site much like Amazon does here in the States so they are not to blame for these questionable 18650 battery box kits. I do now wonder how safe they are without battery balancing.

when the overcharge was tested, how do we know if the controlled voltage was not a result of internal circuit in the batteries are functioning?
