Charles wasn’t forbidden to marry Camilla. If he had put his foot down,as he later would do, he could have gotten his way, but Camilla actually wanted to marry Andrew-Parker Bowles who was the most eligible bachelor of the time. Diana was sure that she would marry Prince Andrew when she grew up. Her family took to calling her Dutch because they were also sure she would marry Andrew and become a Duchess. Once Diana realized that she could actually catch Charles, the chase was on and facilitated by her family. Diana feigned interest in Charles’ interests and hobbies (Balmoral, fishing hunting, etc.)-basically, she pretended to be who Camilla is, a hunting, shooting, fishing, reading country girl. Then as soon as they were on their honeymoon (most of which was at Balmoral), Diana declared each of his interests as borrrring. When the honeymoon moved on to Balmoral she would have have fits of screaming and crying when he wouldn’t do what she wanted when she wanted him to do it (the court was at Balmoral for the summer so there was official business going on and many witnesses). After the honeymoon she proceeded to, one by one, separate him from his friends (he would give in to avoid conflict with her), then his staff (who would quit because she would not look at or speak to those she wanted to leave. In her mind, she loved him, but then attempted to change everything about him, and if he wanted any kind of peace, he would comply. Diana and her family, particularly the Spencers, were very ambitious and misrepresented who she was to the RF, particularly regarding her emotional health & stability. The Spencer’s actually had a bit of a reputation for unstable men (Diana’s mom cited abuse in the divorce), but the RF didn’t think the mental issues affect the Spencer women. Diana actually refused to cooperate with mental health professionals provided by the RF when they realized how unstable she was, and wouldn’t accept mental health help for years (yes, the RF tried to get her professional help) until a friend threatened to out her bulimia to the press because she was afraid it would kill her. And that is just how she treated Charles. As a grown woman she held hostility towards her mother for leaving her abusive father (her mother took Diana & her brother with her but lost custody), pushed her 60 year old stepmother down the stairs (long after Diana married btw), threw her stepmother’s things out the window in trash bags after her father died, fired one staff for claiming expenses with the palace for some trips with Diana (completely legitimate expenses), and fired another who was the currier delivering tapes to Andrew Morten for her for accepting reimbursement from the publishing company. i think these kinds of comments about what charles thought or didn't think are unhelpful. Remind yourself that back in those days there was not the same knowledge there is today. Most men had no idea what to do (or women) or how to handle the issues that Diana had. in fact, all their marriage did was escalate the mental illness that she already had. Realistically - she had not done any 'self work' at that stage (before her marriage) and it is unlikely she would have found happiness with anyone at all. i believe the shame is that basically her life ended just as it was beginning, when she finally understood herself and her reactions. Happiness was there for her.. within sight and reach and her life was ended. that is the tragedy..

Charles was cold and uncaring, which is different than being concerned but perhaps not fully understanding. It's obvious he didn't want to understand or be supportive. It wasn't just that eating disorders were little talked about. He clearly knew that cheating on her and gaslighting her whilst having all their friends gaslight her, too, would, perhaps, be extremely hurtful even to someone who had dealt with their baggage. Excusing Charles's behavior is inexcusable.

@@thedepthsofrepair you really don't know any of that. You assume based on media reports or even from Dianas interview. there is always two sides to a story.. your version is fairly biased. He doesn't seem to be cold and uncaring (in fact what we do know about him is that he is very caring based on his hobbies and philanthropical activities). was he cold to diana? Quite possibly but .. how would a person manage that kind of emotional beahviour when there is no training in mental health? He potentially wasn't aware that it was 'mental illness' and thought she was simply over reactive, emotionally manipulative, demanding and all out cra-cra.. (at the time it was happening). if you have lived with someone with mental illness who can 'go off like a fire cracker' most people will simply be silent rather than risk an explosion. the silence can be perceived as 'coldness or a lack of care' when its simply self preservation. either way - none of will or can possibly know what was going on inside the marriage.

@@brianhuffman2070 Not really as her family lived next door at one point and they used to go over on holidays etc to play, The Spencer estate is a stunning place, where she is buried on a small island on their lake. Though I do agree with you as in she was slightly in love with the idea of marry a “Prince” from reading her aunties ‘Barbara Cartland’ romance novels. Plus the Royals were very stuck in a different era and had strict rules to follow even behind closed doors. I think Diana helped improve the royals humanity towards the common people etc… She did throw herself into fashion, but that was her way of trying to compete with Camilla and get Charles love back. Though he needed a wife that didn’t outshine him and stayed in the background. Which is a shame as I think now being more mature… They would of made a great team and even a better king and Queen in my opinion.

@@lizpugh6440 I think you have a few points to me it's obvious Charles never loved her (too bad for him), she thought it was fairy tale to no fault of her own she was young and pretty and naive, and I think she came to realize who Charles and Andrew really are along with Camilla bulldozing her way into royalty was the driving force of that whole affair
