I still love how Wilbert Awdry created Henry's backstory based on the illustrator's mistake. "I want an atlantic and that ____,___,___ send/drew me that!"

I’m glad Awdry kept Henry in the RWS, without him, I wouldn’t have my personal connection to him.

The only gripe I have with Henry was Sharon Miller's decision to disregard his rebuild entirely and require him to need special coal. At least that was corrected in King Of The Railway.

The fact that Henry's basis is the most confusing out of all the engines baffles me

what i find funny is that Wilbert worked with Henry's messed up illustrations instead of just telling the illustrator outright to draw him as a 4-4-2

Henry had the best character arc of season 1 and we came close to never having that story. He also had one of the very best character theme tunes in the show.

Honestly, I think it would have been awesome if Henry came back from Crewe as a straight-up LMS Black-Five in the show. When I was a kid and they mentioned him coming back in a new shape, I couldn't see a difference between that and his old one. Making him a black-five would definitely distinguish him better from Gordon.

I would proudly give Henry a fist bump.

In response to your question about how he could he so thoroughly rebuilt without dying: He was rebuilt at Crewe. They were famous for taking the name & numberplates off an engine, cutting it up, then building a new one, & bolting the old plates to it! Hence, they could put the expense against the revenue account (for a rebuild), as opposed the capital account (for ordering a new locomotive). This kept the investor's pockets nice & full. I imagine that all of the surviving Mk1 Henry would be a lever or two and the whistle, perhaps.

Personality in my head canon I think henry was a prototype for the black fives but there was all the problems that Henry had and the lms decided not to continue the class until after the kipper crash where with the help from sir topham hatt he was rebuilt into the shape the black five was built into

I'd like to see more people adapting the stories with Henry as his originally-intended 4-4-2. The big question of course is; if one depicts Henry as the 4-4-2 he was meant to be, should one continue to include him as a Black Five post-Flying Kipper, or merely keep him as he was?

I think a great result of Henry’s design being inconsistent until Awdry had to change it himself to a real one has been a benefit for the Railway Series as a whole just because the designs have always been very nice and close to their real world counterparts.

I think in heritage circle the thinking goes if the frames are original so is the overall engine, regardless of what else has been swapped out/replaced.

Here's how I see Henry in his old shape, and how I debunked the "2 Henrys" theory: In his old shape, Henry was an GNR B1 4-6-0 with the boiler of a C1 4-4-2, thus explaining the small firebox. After Henry's major derailment in 1935, the only original piece that was kept on him during his rebuild was his smokebox (and that includes his face). That way, he retained his memories and voice from his old shape.

The reading railroad in the US rebuilt a number of old 2-8-0 consolidations into 4-8-4 northerns, and the Virginian's Triplex, a 2-8-8-8-4, was rebuilt into a 2-8-2 mikado and a 2-8-8-0 so this does happen in real life.

I always assumed they kept his face and smokebox, melted down his broken bits, and rebuilt them into a Black 5 and reattached the rest. It's even suggested in the official backstories that the owner of Crewe owed the Fat Controller a HUGE favor.

Am I the only one who's noticed that it's only the green engines (Henry & Percy) who have the most baffling and convoluted origins?....

Honestly, Henry being rebuilt actually does make some sense. Here's the thing with steam locomotives from that era - they were all still hand-built with manual tools in a pre-industrial fashion. Everything would have to be hand-fitted. What they probably did with the rebuild was use the plans for the Black Five as a basis and adapted them to keep the parts of Henry that worked as intended while fixing any issues.

For a while, I actually never noticed that Henry had been completely rebuilt.

Here's my theory as to why Henry was able to be changed from a Hybrid Gresley Pacific to a standard Stanier Black 5. In the RWS story "Out of Puff", Henry took on some bad coal which caused his performance to become dreadful to the point where he was struggling to breathe. When Henry stopped his train at Wellsworth, The story goes that quote *"The fireman cleared away more ashes, but when he tried to close Henry's smokebox door it did not make the air tight fit that it should have done".* This resulted said door being warped out of shape. Why is this one line of dialogue important? Well, it's pretty much confirms that the faces on all of the steam locomotive characters in the RWS can hinge open allowing access to the internals of the smokebox. It's also pretty common knowledge that the engines can feel when parts of their "bodies" have either been detached for maintenance or in the case Douglas in the CGI episode "Love Me Tender" completely ripped off from themselves. In my head cannon; when Henry was sent to be quote unquote "rebuilt" at Crewe, the workmen there simply unscrewed Henry's face from his original Hybrid body and installed it onto a newly built Stanier Black 5 body that was altered to accept his Gresley inspired smokebox door design. Perhaps his warped smokebox door from that same RWS story that I mentioned was simply a bi-product of this interesting conversion.

I have a theory planning why Henrys rejected LNER design was converted into a LMS black 5. So, in the lore the LMS agreed with the NWR to have their passage trains from somewhere on the Brendan branch, thru Victarstown into LMS trackage. I don't know if the locomotive works at Crewe serviced all of the big four railways locomotives, or just LMS but perhaps since Henry was hauled to crewe on LMS tracks, maybe the workmen there figured a black 5 look and design would fit well for rebuilding since Henry was a 4-6-0 and discussed it with Sir Tophem.

Funny how Awdry had to come up with an in-universe excuse to get Henry into the exact shape of a real existing locomotive which is the reason the amazing story, The Flying Kipper exists. I think Awdry was trying to do the same thing with Thomas with Thomas Comes To Breakfast when he found an excuse to make Thomas have even less E2 features by giving him a new flat running board after his crash because he wanted him to be a different locomotive to an E2.

Here’s a thought. Since Henry was based off an GNR design (midland built mind you) then would it make sense that Henry could be rebuilt into an LNER design. A Thompson B1 would make sense as they are considered the LNER equivalent to the black 5. The only thing that really changes besides his design is the date of the crash having to be during/post ww2 and the workshop he was being rebuilt in( likely darlington)

In my Thomas and friends head cannon, Henry is a LMS black 5 just how Thomas is an LB&SRC E3 and Percy is a GWR Trojan *this is just my Thomas and friends head cannon*

Henry though was a great example of the tomfoolery of the British Rail companies though. As humor would have it. And My head cannon is the soul of a steam engine resides in his boiler. Which Henry MK1 and MK2 probably shared cause when engines got rebuilt it was usually around the old Boiler upgrading everything else.

My head canon: Henry was a A1C a A1 with a C1 cab and firebox witch was misdone and was to small then after the wreak he was rebuilt with a LMS Black 5 firebox and cab

Well it's not unheard of for an engine to be rebuilt. Look at the GER engine like Hurricane he was a tank engine rebuilt to a tender engine and the Southern did it too. So changing the frame underneath and making another boiler fit in the existing smokebox like any other general boiler replacement seems to hold up to me.

On the Frisco railroad in the United States. They rebuild a set of 2-10-2's into 4-8-2's. The only part that was used from the rebuild was the steam dome where it bolted to the boiler, however because the locomotive serial number is stamped into the dome the engines could be considered rebuilds despite having almost nothing from the previous locomotive. I dont know how the sentient train thing works here but it's something to consider from a technical aspect.

Well I don’t really see the problem, at least from a visual standpoint. As drawn originally in the 4-6-2 design, all that really would’ve had to change was adding the larger firebox, splashers, removing the rear two wheels to convert it to the 4-6-0 build and adding on the stanier tender, along with maybe minor changes to the frame and footplate/buffer beams

A few things I’m suddenly thinking about Henry: If Henry I was a Gresley design, does this mean he had Gresley’s conjugated valve gear? Or did his builder thought it too complicated and went only with Walschaerts valve gear? Henry was said to be a mix between an A1 and a C1, and from most illustrations we may say that he had the underframes and motions of an A1 but with a C1 boiler, thus making his firebox “small”. But C1s aren’t small engines themselves, in fact they were the first in UK to have such wide fireboxes. Would a C1 boiler really be underpowered for an A1 chassis? Who could’ve built Henry? If we think of railways that were rivals of Gresley or the GNR, the Midland would be a possibility, and a lot of people do think Henry’s from MR. However, MR opted for small engine policy, so I highly doubt it’d be MR. Could it be LNWR? Or maybe the NER or NBR wanting to create publicity to match GNR? The NER did it with their A2, so maybe NBR? Or maybe was it one of the private builders? Although private builders usually make smaller engines, but Vulcan Foundry and North British did have the ability, could it be them? All in all it’s just me overthinking lol
