Power Girl is one of those DC comics characters with multiple origins. She's Superman's cousin from the planet Krypton from a parallel Earth but that's not all. What other histories does she have? What does it have to do with Atlantis? How does all of this tie in to Supergirl? Find out here on Casually Comics.

@smorre4004

PG is a prime example of DC stories being editorially driven, not character-driven. Despite the complicated origins that get retconned, Karen still shines through. She has lots of baggage within universe, but she takes it in strides unlike Supergirl who's an angsty teenager and tends to fall for villains, or gets mind-controlled. PG hits that sweet spot where she's aspirational, but not a boy scout like Superman. She's brash, but not petulant like Supergirl. Karen ran her own company, was a chairwoman for the JSA, has her own costume and name separate from Superman. She's just all-around a great character. They could make her more proud and less prone to ask for help like in the early issues where was constantly proving to herself and others of how good she was. This should land her in a lot of trouble from time to time. Her kryptonite, as it were.

Tom The Fish Shots fired! Haha 😆 DC character backstories confuse me a lot more because I didn’t grow up reading them as a kid and I don’t have the time I once did to obsess over it. Donna Troy maybe. Jessica Drew, the Maximoff twins? Wolverine? nah, cake. And I have no idea who the last person is. Do you mean Aqualad? He might, but 🤷‍♂️. Power girl and Huntress also maybe? I definitely wanted to know their backstory.

I was a big fan of Supergirl pre-crisis when she was in issues of the Legion of Super-Heroes. Her romance with Brainiac 5 was always interesting to me, especially with the LSH issues after her death in Crisis revealing that Brainiac 5 knew she was doomed to die all along and unable to change it. I never liked the later teenaged Supergirl or Matrix or the half-angel version or the angry New 52 version. I remember reading the appearances of Power Girl in the early 80s and thought she was cool but was not hooked. To me, she really came into her own during her time with Justice League Europe. Her dealing with Wally in particular helped establish her forceful personality (ignoring the entire diet soda affecting her personality silliness). Despite her name, she was always a mature woman with her head on right (aside from her origins) and didn't play the role of secondary "girl" character. The New 52 version of her was a bit of a mess (as was most of New 52 Earth 2) but played off of Huntress well. She's a good example of a strong female character and, in my eyes, what Marvel keeps trying to do with Carol Danvers (though they keep sabotaging that, which is another discussion).

The thing I always shook my head at with the whole multiverse thing is that no one takes into account the fact that the various Kryptons should be as varied as the earths are. I mean, what if on a particular Krypton, Superman's parents gave birth to a daughter instead of a son? ...and what if SHE ended up on earth one, and meets the various members of the "Super" family? Now that could get interesting, I think. 😈
@Raja1938

In the pre-crisis comics, they actually did make distinctions between Krypton-1 and Krypton-2. A few examples: In the former, Kal-El was sent to Earth as a toddler (who remembered his parents) while in the latter Kal-L was an infant (with no memory of his origin). Their mothers were named Lara and Lora respectively. In the former, Kryptonians had no powers on their home world. In the latter, they had strength, speed, x-ray vision, and the ability to leap great distances.

I remember when John Byrne started drawing Superman... in Marvel Comics. (I know this video isn't about Superman, but you mentioned John Byrne's Superman, which I was around for, and I am reminded his drawings and comments in Fantastic Four earlier.) John Byrne drew and explained Marvel's Gladiator so he looked like a purple skinned Superman with a Mohawk. And when he lifted the Baxter building Mister Fantastic observed it must be some kind of Telekinesis, not just raw strength because the building wasn't crumbling. Thank you so very much for your thoughts and video.

I've always thought the Crisis was the worst thing to ever happen to the DC universe. But apparently, the worst part was that they couldn't leave it alone. Notice you never mention Zero Hour, the second reboot. By the way, my Barry Allen Flash never lost his mother. She was alive in the 80s, after Barry killed Reverse Flash to save the woman he almost married. So there was no reason for him to go back, or if he did go back, it should be to fix the timeline to what we knew then.

Honestly, while I definitely enjoy "the window", I've never been a Power Girl fan really. I think a main part is just how confusing her backstory is to the point that I'd rather not get involved. Supergirl is clean, simple, and easy: Cousin to Superman, gets stuck in space and stays a teen, ironically needs her younger cousin to act as a mentor because he's biologically older than her.

I was probably into Supergirl before Powergirl appeared. I have always liked Supergirl better. The Arion origin never sat well with me, and I was pleased that they undid that. In the cartoons, Power Girl's appearance was used for a clone of Supergirl called Galatea. I think the same character may have appeared on the CW series briefly and also served as the inspiration for Red Daughter, the Kaznian Supergirl who adopts the name Linda Lee. Also, the CW Supergirl has an origin more along the lines of Powergirl than the original Supergirl had.

I prefer each of them for different reasons over the other. I think it's also because Injustice 2 painted Power Girl and Supergirl in very different ways for me. In the game, Power Girl was just uber confident and no nonsense. She had no qualms beating the hell out of everyone and more importantly, she was fully aware that she was attractive and even has some intro lines that go "Eyes up here". Supergirl on the other hand is sort of like the girl next door type of woman to me. In Injustice 2 (I'm gonna be referencing this a lot because its one of the best portrayals of the two characters to me personally), Supergirl was depicted as innocent and naive, much in the same way she was depicted in that animated movie where she arrived to Earth and Darkseid tried to convert her into a minion (forgot the name of the movie). She's just always had this kind of allure to her, she's super pretty and even though she's technically older than Superman, she's learning from him. I guess I prefer Supergirl in some cases because she's in a lot of ways like Superman and it works well because of the fact that she's way less experienced than he is and the fact that she's trying to fit in like Superman, except its significantly harder because he's had his entire life to fit in, while she has to get used to it without having the chance to grow up into it. Power Girl however, is the type of girl I like seeing in stories as a supporting character. When she's there, I know something about to go down and she's gonna kick some ass. I'm actually quite indifferent about her boob window (harkening to the last video) and I think one of the best things about her is that she's a great foil to Supergirl. If Kara feels shy about something, she approaches it with unshakable confidence. Like em both, but I probably like Supergirl more consistently mostly because I've seen more of her and because she's more my type of woman. This can easily be rectified however if Power Girl actually gets very meaningful content that's not meant to utterly confuse the readers.

I had just finished writing a very long post at your previous Powergirl clip when I noticed you had just uploaded this one. I won't do it again, but I'll just say that I like both Supergirl and Powergirl for different reasons, but one reason I like them that they share is that I feel they both have been treated unfairly throughout the years and that they both deserve better than the stories or incarnations they got (their New 52 versions being the least appealing to me so far). Hopefuly, they will be treated better in the future.

Power Girl at least back in the bronze age, was always touted as a solution to a problem that really didn't exist, ergo she was somewhat condescendingly labelled "Supergirl, Done Right" . She had all the correct elements, a blooded Marvel veteran for a creator and at least initially a nice simple origin. After COIE she was repeatedly foisted on downcast Supergirl fans as the "proper replacement" for the departed and deliberately forgotten Kara Zor El. In that role, she never quite clicked IMHO. But, PG has always been a strong performer in team books (where her ongoing tension with Superman can be showcased and used to leverage plot lines), otherwise she has never really been able to sustain a solo book. Which is sad because her 2009 or so solo book from Amanda Conner & Jimmy Palmiotti had a lot going for it, if you haven't yet, you should devote a podcast to it, well worth revisiting.

In some of the comics Power Girl's day job is being the head of Starrware Industries, a technology firm and defense contractor with a specialty in nanomachines. Power Girl founded it herself after quitting her job as a programmer at a computer firm. So how did she gain knowledge of human programming languages? Thanks to Wonder Woman, who brought a device over from Themyscira to blast her brain with knowledge on computers. How do the Amazons have knowledge on how computers work, even when that issue came out (Showcase #99, April 1978)? Beats me. But I like that Power Girl keeps her knowledge up to date by doing that one thing where Superman goes "I have read every medical textbook in a few seconds using my super speed and I have to perform surgery on this person otherwise they'll die" and she realized that if she did that with books on computers, technology and physics she can use her knowledge to make some major moolah. I mean, she's in charge of a major firm that works with nanomachines and is, for lack of a better term, stacked, and stuff while Clark makes ends meet as a journalist. Superman's got a big heart, but he's not exactly smart. I guess Power Girl also kinda cheated by being tutored in Kryptonian science while traveling to Earth.

While I've read some comics, most of my comics knowledge comes primarily from cartoons as well as live action movies and TV shows. If I remember my Justice League Unlimited, wasn't Power Girl a clone of Supergirl? I also recall Supergirl's secret identity being Linda Lee in the cinema classic Supergirl (1984). Linda Lee, Linda Danvers, Karen Starr, Kara Danvers. Have I missed any identities?

Granted the clone's costume was similar to Power Girl's but had no cape. The clone's name was Galatea. Galatea was never called Power Girl.

I really like Power Girl, and I think she's a bit more interesting than Supergirl. She has her own business, is a team player (probably could be a team leader if she wanted to), she feels more unique. (No offense if you are a Supergirl fan, I do like her as well, perhaps I've missed out on some of her good runs). Much as I am a fan... didn't realize how confusing her origin was until this vid. I always thought it would be simpler to say "She got stuck on Earth 1, and when the multiverse came back, Earth 2 was restored with a new Power Girl." If anyone hasn't, I'd recommend reading the Palmotti/Gray run of Power Girl, it really shows off the character's strengths, and it's got great art. Also, fun fact: According to the Editorial of the Power Girl 1988 miniseries, fans were not happy with her new origin, which they admitted. I've always disliked the Atlantean idea.

Loved the Amanda Conner series.the Zardoz/Vartox Sean Connery spoof was great. The new 52 was where I checked out on DC it had the opposite effect of what was intended, hence rebirth I suppose. Wally West was my Flash, he was my favourite DC character, to see him thrown away was disheartening. I bought everything flash I those days, including the original Flashpoint, where it was an crosswords tale of Barry stopping The JFK assassination, but being paralysed by the bullet. The rebirth special of his return of him was really great. But it's not the same. I still need to finish the entire doomsday Clock series. I'd love a series on Wally. Keep up the good work.

Heh, I am old enough to remember when fans were in a rage because Barry died and was being replaced by an irresponsible kid. I am kind of amazed that Barry stayed dead as long as he did. In the end, i guess your favorite tends to be who you grew up with.

yeah i remember that time, i saw she was stuck in between worlds with the other power girl too (tanya spears). i never knew what happened to them later, so then during doomsday clock was when she was released then makes sense since that's how JSA returned. So far the only times i have seen her pop up was in back ground shots, well except during the harley quinn 2016 series but that one is like 5 years in the future.

Yeah. There was a story, I think in one of those anthology books, where Arion gave her false memories as a mercy. The Earth Two characters actually remembered their proper origins at first. Last Days of the JSA began the same way before their Ragnarok adventure rewrote their minds.

I just caught this episode because I was up all night after the announcement of the curfew! YAY!!! Anyway, love your hair. Just figured out that might be a scar through your eyebrow. Yea, sorry for looking too close. ALSO, I like both PowerGirl and SuperGirl. and yes, the rewrite of power girls history IS just downright too complicated for the mother of Hal Jordan's child. ;) Yet, I'm also a GL fan, so after ALL that Hal has been through high-fives for Hal Jordan. ;) I still want to read the issues where Barry Allen was tried for manslaughter, and any stories about him and Iris in the future. Was Mxptlnk in the "future Flash" stories? ;) I'd also like to know more about Barry and Iris raising the twins, and more about this Nora child and some information about the when/where... Oh well... The questions that abound in a comic fan's mind. :)

I love Power Girl for all the reasons you have said. I still don't know why people are confused about her breast. "Kryptonians are indistinguishable from humans but have their greater height and muscle builds (this can be explained as an extreme example of convergent evolution)" In other words in the TLDR : All Kyptonians are going to grow up to be Olympian level physique, No one complains about how jacked Superman is, but they want to Shame Power Girl? That's sexist and people need to learn that their entire species will grow up like that, it is normal for them, super girl will grow up into Power Girl not just in name but body as well. If there is any inaccuracy is that Superman doesn't have a obvious Olympian level problem down below. lol He needs equal representation as well, he is going to need stronger clothes to hide his junk.

Power Girl exemplifies Nietzsche's saying that what doesn't kill you makes you stronger. Having no lifeline to the Superman family post-Crisis gave PG more presence as a single hero and built up stronger bonds with the rest of the DCU. It took a while for her to again be regarded as a full-fledged Kryptonian but, now, any idea of "legitimizing" her with a Super-name or an S-shield is a rightful insult.

At 00:50 there's a glimpse of Jonni DC, Continuity Cop, dealing with several version of Donna Troy - in what comic does this happen? Is that before of after Ambush Bug Year None, which starts with the death of Jonni DC? Maybe that's just me, but I think Jonni DC herself could be a great topic for a video - not only does the concept of a continuity cop go places, especially with the DC multiverse, but it's interesting that the character is female in a medium where men are so often prevalent, and according to ambush Bug Year none her regular look involves regular human proportions, but when she acts in her continuity cop role, her body goes all chibi, which is funny considering how Serious Business she's being about comics.
