I learned it about 30 years ago when I bought Clifford Ashley's book. I use it occasionally. It's a great knot if you're not worried about having to untie it.

With a marlin spike, some dedication and a tremendous amount of swearing you can undo any knot, but saying it's impossible to untie (whilst not strictly true) isn't far from the truth once it's tight and gets people thinking twice about using for things they want untied or, god forbid, putting it around a limb

I like to practice Clove Hitch, then Ground-Line Hitch, then Constrictor Knot, because they're all basically just tucking the working end under a different bit, so you can teach it as a natural progression that way. But if you're teaching it, always always always warn how tight the constrictor can get and never to put it around a part of your anatomy or any object that can be damaged.

@jfreedner
@jfreedner 10 ай бұрын
The clove hitch is great when you want ease of untying. The constrictor knot is designed to hold more friction under the crossing so it can be cinched down and "locked" in place by some elastic tension in the cord or compression of the hitched object, as well as be more secure against accidentally coming loose. It's best used for things that you won't need to untie, or when you need the security and don't mind needing to cut it out if necessary.
