The Gibson Les Paul Recording is a super flexible tone monster with loads of options for shaping your sound. I'm having a stab at showing how the controls work and what kind of sounds you can get from this 70s beauty.

I’ve owned one just like yours since around 1990. It’s a really cool guitar and I get a lot of conversation when people see it.

I’ve not been able to definitively date mine but its’ 6 digit serial starts with 104, so I’ve been told mine is likely a 71 Recording

Absolutely great review. This was actually the first professional guitar I ever bought. I never should’ve sold it. Wow, do I miss it. The memories.

I think I knew that Les himself liked these - of course.....we never saw Les with anything like factory-issued Gibson! That alone makes these quite special. The range of sounds is impressive but it must take some time to get to know those controls! Great sound demo - thanks!

Super interesting setup. Great illustration! I sort of want that guitar, but I already have 4 guitars that I don't play enough. But maybe some day. You can really hear the tone changes, and see how to get them on that guitar. Nice demo and explanation.

I was looking at original examples of this guitar on reverb, and i found the prices on some to be a lot lower than i expected. I don't really know what I expected price wise, but they were lower than i expected. However, i have read that some colors of the same model go for more money than others. I think the cheapest one i saw went for the upper $4K range.

I hope you can find the demo disc that came in Guitar Player Magazine where Les Paul demos this guitar. The sounds I remember are fantastic.

Great job describing the complicated controls. If you Plug these guitars into the Phonograph. CD, or Tape input of a high quality stereo, The decade switch will come alive, releasing tones that will sound exactly like a Bass, Strat ,Tele, or acoustic guitar, and not the peizo compromise from "Ovation" or even K-n-K Peizo pickups perfection. As you might infer from my name, I have SEVERAL of the Les Paul Low impedance guitars, and also Gibson L-5 S and Bass recording and Original Gibson Low Z Preamplifiers I can share, but I am the scientist/physicist, one generation removed, of the Doyle family luthiers. Plugging a Les Paul Recording, Personal, or Professional with Low Impedance Pickups into a normal guitar or bass amplifier will not reveal the true sounds these guitars are capable of. The pickups on your model are not hum-bucking in themselves. Each are single coils with a huge amount of electricity real estate in the windings. I will share the Original Gibson Pre-amplifiers, Hi Z and Low Z aftermarket transformer solutions and Tips and Tricks on request. Wurst Guitars has done the best job describing the practical use of how these controls work., so Please share a request here and I will share my vintage wardrobe -Mark Doyle

@@wurst.guitars I have a few. A 1969 LP Professional, a rare first year 1969 Recording, and the SWEET 1972 L-5s with Low impedance. Would you like to collaborate? I have a science outreach program in Portland OR where I use these to teach. We can use our Bus Barn studio and 23 vintage guitars to share recording tricks. I am a scientist, but our teachers and students never cease to amaze with novel ideas.

@Mark Doyle Wow. I just searched online for twenty minutes just trying to find out if these pickups were single coil or humbuckers (I know the modern ones use splittable humbuckers that are not low impedance) and could find NO definitive answer, although a couple of things said they were humbuckers. Then I just went back to listening to demos and randomly stumbled on your comment answering my question. So, they are single coils. Thank you.

No they are low impedance humbuckers - thus not single coil - I do have have one of these. @@darwinsaye

I had this guitar in 1976, eventually settling on the L5s in 1977, playing it for over thirty years. Les knew what he was doing, just not everyone’s “cup of tea.”

I would have like to hear that through a less distorted amp like say a Roland or other solid state amp. All Les Pauls are great jazz guitars through the right amp!

I like these old guitars with all the switches. I can see how having options in a the studio would be nice, but I'm leaning toward something with one pickup, no switches.

Not Dumb at all..RESPECT! I grew up Rural Oregon (no music stores) an old timer from Whitney Oregon, gave me an Old Acoustic guitar that literally Played itself, compared to my Mom's Sears Silvertone in 1967. I cut up that "Old guitar" and Tex helped me build an electric guitar using the neck etc.., I cut up a Pre-War Martin D-18! I still have my "mistake", and it still plays great, but my experienced Luthier self...OOPS. At least I follow Les Paul who also cut up perfectly good guitars to make them "Better" (Huge Smile) @@aitken1965
