what does that mean, as in he's playing on actual console instead of "a special console that can play every game"? cuz it doesnt look very upscaled.

@@ArcRay20 Yes he's on a PS2 which outputs at 240p which isn't part of the YPBPR standard, thus not all HDTVs and capture cards support it. If you use an upscaler to get it to 480p it will work with pretty much all HDTVs and captures.

Seriously, especially PS2. I remember most PS2 racing games used the right analog stick for analog braking and acceleration. It sucked, especially for Gran Turismo because it was impossible to use the analog stick to brake and accelerate when needed.

man, Monster Hunter is one of those “we’re lucky we got a sequel to this one “ kind of origin stories. If the 2nd, and 3rd gen never happened; we’d be talking about a weird little one-off game from Capcom that played terribly lol So glad we’ve come as far as we have with Monster Hunter; and glad it followed the Street Fighter 1 trend if “how the hell did this get a sequel?”

I remember reading that the game was apparently a huge project by capcom at the time (an online console game was kind of a big deal, hence why half of the game is no longer accessible due to being online only). With the investment this must've been, I imagine a follow-up was planned from the start even if it wasn't a huge success. Or maybe the explanation is more simple and it's just that the online play was a big enough gimmick at the time that japan ate it up.

Ooooh the nostalgia! I still remember when I got this game! A friend of mine showed up saying he had found 2 amazing DRAGON games and asked if I wanted to borrow them, so I sure did. One was Drakengard, which was really fun but never really got hooked into it... And the other one was Monster Hunter. The name alone already caught my attention! I booted it up, and suddenly I'm watching an intro that looks straight out of Nat-Geo or Animal Planet, until a freaking wyvern shows up, and there are people hunting it! Most people seem to not like Monster Hunter the first they play any of the games in the series, but I, on the other hand, was instantly hooked into it! It was so different from all of the hack'n'slash games that populated the PS2 era, and then there was exploring, and the combat was really methodical. So many good memories out of this one! I even got a corrupted save file at one point and instead of abandoning the game, like I usually do when this sort of thing happens, I just went right back to it and start a fresh save! With all that said, I don't actually recommend this particular game to any one that's interested in checking out the franchise hahah. At the time, the right stick analog controls were "fine": it took some time getting used to using the famous "claw grip", but now that we actually use buttons for the attacks, it's pretty wild going back to using the right analog stick. But still, the core of the Monster Hunter series, the essence of the game, it all has been there right from this first game, what we've got with later installments in the franchise were basically QoL improvements all around, because Monster Hunter is in fact THE Monster Hunter game. Can't wait to see more of this series, even if the grinding back then was ROUGH! Most of my time playing the game was basically grinding materials and money ("Liver of Legend" ftw).

This is so great! I always wanted to know how classic Monster Hunter worked. And it’s surprising how many things didn’t change until World. Just unfortunate that there’s no way to play multiplayer anymore.

Very intrigued. Saw trailers of this game but wouldn't give the series an honest shot until World (I was aware of it though). Love it now and tried out this game on a demo disc recently. Was cumbersome but I was honestly impressed they had so much of their core down in their first attempt. On the PS2 no less.

Wow, I can't believe the series got off the ground with controls like that! And it's tedious, too? Woof! It's neat to see how far the series has come, though!

Keep going with it. The odds I'll ever experience the game myself are pretty low

I remember that I bought this game because it looked so cool and the idea sounded great. And it became one of my favourite series. Hundreds of hours have been poured in over multiple titles. I can’t wait for a new instalment on PS5/current gen.

I love this. If possible, you should consider playing on one of the open-sourced online servers with some folks from the Discord. It is a *PAIN* to setup, but you can actually play Monster Hunter Online quests again this way.
