A football game takes 60 minutes to play. You're not supposed to blow the final whistle before the game is over. However, during the final week of the 1968 NFL season, when the Chicago Bears played the Green Bay Packers, with the Bears needing to win the game in order to win the Central Division and make the playoffs, the referee did just that when he blew the final whistle well before the game was actually over. And this catastrophe proved to benefit the Minnesota Vikings tremendously, while screwing over the Bears in the process. This is the somewhat forgotten story to how the 1968 NFL season ended

Seeing Brian Piccolo (41) is rather poignant as he had less than two years to live at this point (cancer took him in June of 1970). The junior high school I went to in Far Rockaway, Queens, NY was named for him and had his number 41 jersey and Bears helmet in a display case near the entrance.

The scoreboard clock did not become the official game clock in the NFL until 1970.. Until then, the officiating crew kept the official time on the field. That's why the game was stopped before the scoreboard clock ran down.

Dear sir, I am an old man and a forever-Bears fan, which is evidenced by that fact that when the Bears played the NY Giants in the 1963 NFL Championship Game, I lived (and still do) in the northern suburbs and can confirm that the Bears home game for the title was blacked out in Chicago. That is, no Chicago TV station aired the game because of the NFL's home-team blackout rule. Because of where I lived, my family was able to pull in the video signal from Milwaukee and so we got to watch the title game with a fuzzy picture which clearly was better than nothing. Anyway, I am now in the midst of your Bears playlist and have a suggestion for you to look up because I recall this vividly, although 1977 is 47 years ago and as a senior citizen, who knows about my recall. Here's the deal: The good news is I am certain there is plenty of video on the game because of something else that happened in the contest so that's in your favor. I also need you to confirm what I believe to be true. That is, the Minnesota Vikings and Bears each finished the '77 season 9-5. The Vikings won the division on a tiebreaker and they then got to beat up I believe on the Rams in the first round of the playoffs while the Bears were cannon fodder for the Cowboys in their first game. My point is, things could have been the other way around, with the Bears beating the Rams in LA and the Vikings getting creamed by the Cowboys except for what, as I recall, was a series of coaching blunders by Bears coach Jack Pardee. In 1977, the tiebreaker between the 9-5 Vikings and 9-5 Bears was 1) head-to-head (they split); 2) division record (both went 6-1 as Tampa Bay in the division played each team just once); 3) conference record (both went 8-4); 4) best record in common games (they both went 1-2). 5) point differential, which the Vikings won because they won by points in the first meeting, and in sthe second meeting the Bears won by 3 points. Now, here's the thing. The second game was in November of 1977 and is famous and there's plenty of video on it because it's the game when Walter Payton rushed for 275 yards to set an NFL single-game rushing record. That's not why I am typing this. The good news is that because the game is famous because of Payton, you likely can get a play-by-play account of the contest. If you do, you will see time after time after time after time after time after time that Bears coach Pardee shunned a sure field goal to go up 6 points by going for it on fourth down in the red zone and getting stuffed. The reason I remember this is that 1977 was the year when I believe point differential was no longer a high spot on the breaking-a-tie list. We as fans did not know that and Bears fans were going crazy during that game because they all thought that the Bears needed to win by 6 or more to gain the tiebreaker. As things turned out as the season played out, the fans were right because all the other tiebreakers did not come into play. Nobody knew that at the time, but in hindsight, Pardee could have easily won that game 19-7 instead of 10-7 and the division title would have gone to the Bears. So, if you're looking for a video to add to the Bears collection or to fill a gap during the NFL's so-called off-season, get a copy of the play-by-play and you'll see how many times Pardee shunned a sure field goal ... and in hindsight set the team up for a non-winnable playoff game vs. the mighty Cowboys. Thanks for reading.
@daleschmieg9050
@daleschmieg9050 Ай бұрын
You are correct. Payton was not happy about this afterwards, even though he set the record and the Bears won, but not by enough. A goal line stand in the 1st quarter, a failed fake FG later in the 1st half, and a goal line stand in the 4th quarter all netted 0. Those are the lost 9 points you are referring to. Also, the Vikings TD xame on a blocked punt return. So many ways the Bears could have opened that game up. Plus, the Vikings win in week 5 came in OT on a fake FG, FS Paul Krause throwing a TD pass, and that is how the Vikings won by 6 instead of just 3.

Based on the newspaper article you referenced, it sounds like the officials determined that Butkus committed a “palpably unfair” act by purposely jumping offsides. The officials have wide discretion to remedy such a situation based upon what’s equitable under the circumstances. In this case, they decided to let the game end.

@ryanjacobson2508

The "palpably unfair act" infraction is almost never called, at any level of football. But I know it's been called as the result of, for example, a high school football coach running into the field and tackling someone. The reason the call is so rare is because there has to be an exceptionally outrageous event to justify the call.
@scottstevens9533
@scottstevens9533 Жыл бұрын
You’re right, but in this case Butkus was jumping offsides on purpose, likely to try to injure someone. When the officials exercised their discretion to end the game, they knew there was almost no risk that the decision would affect the outcome.

It’s interesting you mention the soccer match. The referee Janny Sikazwe, also refereed a World Cup match between Canada and Belgium. The resulting decisions made caused FIFA to tell him that he was no longer required to ref any more matches. There was a hand ball on a ball heading into the net, which was mentioned to the ref, leading to a VAR, and a penalty kick, and yet a yellow, not a red card. Also, there was another play in the box with no penalty. I’m impressed you mentioned the African kerfuffle, I didn’t know about that, until just before the match started.

Before anyone feels bad for the Bears, please keep in mind that the reason Chicago wasn't already eliminated, was because only a week earlier, on Dec. 8, 1968, the refs made an even more embarrassing call that kept the Bears alive, while costing the LA Rams a playoff spot. With that controversial game on the line, the refs got the down wrong, in favor of Chicago. That terrible call eliminated the Rams.

Yeah, nowadays, you NEVER see something like that happening. The NFL will play out all 60 minutes no matter what. The 82 NFC championship game the Redskins tried to run the clock out but turned the ball over on downs, even though everyone thought the game was over, there was like 10 seconds left. Washington was up 31-17 but the refs made both teams come back out and finish the game, something like a 15 minute delay. Then, of course, bottlegate in Cleveland. 48 seconds left, the refs called the game, but then the NFL called and ordered both teams back out to run out the clock.

Have you seen the ending of the 1984 Washington/Dallas game in week 15? Washington had the lead and the ball and was just taking 'victory formation.' Obviously these were bitter rivals, so rather than simply let them do it, the Cowboys were diving in on Joe Theismann and practically spearing him and it looked like the game might break down into a fight. The refs put an end to it by simply calling the game, saying something to the effect of: "The team committing the penalty is behind and has no timeouts left. The game is over." And just like that, they sent the teams to their locker rooms with Washington winning a hugely important game that would help lead to their third straight division crown. Madden and Summerall praised the decision by the refs and nothing more was made of it.
