The Converted is our new series about innovative homes that have been created, or converted, from unlikely places. From butter factories to churches, The Converted will show you that almost anything can become a home.
In this instalment of The Converted, we take a look inside a Fitzroy North home that has been renovated from a boot factory.
Melbourne couple Luke and Ben Delaney were inspired to create a private, urban oasis, filled with plants and natural sunlight. Ben commissioned his friend, Chris Stanley from Splinter Architecture, to transform the mini warehouse which sat within a group of larger warehouses, into their dream home.
Instead of building within four walls, the couple and architect decided to construct the house against the century-old factory wall, and have the other three walls be mostly windows.
With this abundance of natural light, the house features plenty of plants, with a lower ground garden and a rooftop garden covered almost entirely with succulents. The greenery is an important feature of the home, with almost every window looking out to some part of the garden.
The couple also chose to use 3.5 story building to give everyone in the family their own space: the top floor is the adult entertaining area and rooftop garden, with the lower level for the children’s bedrooms and play area.
“They can have their own spaces and you can come together in the middle”, Bec says.
The couple have also made a conscious effort to feature many parts of the original building, including the old factory wall running along one side of the house. While maintaining the bones of the warehouse, the home is not trying to look like a warehouse, but rather features a modern, urban design.
