IMO Johnny's insecurity is another reason why people think Valentine is the real Hero. Not only does Valentine's intense belief in himself make him seem righteous, but Johnny's lack of charisma and inability to explain his goals make us second-guess him. It's hard to have faith in a hero if the hero doesn't have it in himself.

The Fluff And also many people believe he did all that just to be able to walk again, but it’s more than that, he wanted to change and become a better person, by the end of SBR he wasn’t fighting Valentine so he could get his legs back, he was fighting him cause he knew such power couldn’t be trusted to someone like Valentine, Funny Valentine offered Johnny to bring back Gyro, which would change nothing, gyro is still dead, the presence of an alt Gyro would be only beneficial for Johnny since he misses him, but still he did what was right at the end

"In the JoJo arc Steel Ball Run, the major villian is the deeply patriotic President Valentine, and from that perspective his stated goals may be more just-- in fact, I suspect his intentions line up with those of our real-world leaders. But he's willing to sacrifice powerless people to achieve just ends, and that part of his character is, to the minds of the protagonist and the reader, unquestionably and unforgivably evil. Because of this, the character of President Valentine could never be the protagonist. I think this also serves as a good example of a point I made earlier-- that readers wont empathize with a coward." -Hirohiko Araki (Manga in Theory and Practice)

Imagine you are a British man wandering the street at night after a nice drink with your friends. Suddenly, BOOM. You are killed by 7 gun shot wounds that flew down from the sky that fell from a misfired bullet who knows how far away. This is because someone tried to shoot another person in America, but the bullets would miss no matter what. This is what we see happen in the love train fight, people suddenly died due to the repulsion of bad things from the corpse, and people died without deserving it. The hate and sadness is'nt eradicated, its moved unjustly.

@@underscore2736 to a degree yes, but his motivation regarding to make America "take the first napkin" was so that the other countries wouldn't be able to subject the USA to Love Train (or whatever ability they believed the holy corpse would grant them) and instead flipping the script on them. It's comparable to knowing that another country plans on nuking you and preemptively nuking them first so that they are unable to. That's not evil in and of itself. Sure, it's not morally good either, but it is well intentioned and has the best interests of the citizens of the US at heart. It's not like the countries were going to negotiate over the corpse either since it's quite clear that they didn't want it going public. That being said, yes, Valentine is evil, not for his goal, but for how he attempts to achieve that goal. Hundreds of people didn't need to die for the US to get ahold of the holy corpse first, and there likely were better ways of going about this. He's evil in the same way Senator Armstrong from MGR is in that they honestly aren't too different from the protagonist when you consider that they have comparable methods. Johnny kills a ton of people in SBR for getting in his way and to achieve his goals, but after befriending and learning from Gyro, he becomes a better person despite his selfish goal. Valentine--in comparison--serves a more selfless goal (considering multiple versions of himself sacrifice themselves and pass on D4C to other consciousnesses), but he was a lot more unnecessarily ruthless than needed.

*Ahem* Suppose that you were sitting down at this table. The napkins are in front of you, which napkin would you take? The one on your ‘left’? Or the one on your ‘right’? The one on your left side? Or the one on your right side? Usually you would take the one on your left side. That is ‘correct’ too. But in a larger sense on society, that is wrong. Perhaps I could even substitute ‘society’ with the ‘Universe’. The correct answer is that ‘It is determined by the one who takes his or her own napkin first.’ …Yes? If the first one takes the napkin to their right, then there’s no choice but for others to also take the ‘right’ napkin. The same goes for the left. Everyone else will take the napkin to their left, because they have no other option. This is ‘society’… Who are the ones that determine the price of land first? There must have been someone who determined the value of money, first. The size of the rails on a train track? The magnitude of electricity? Laws and Regulations? Who was the first to determine these things? Did we all do it, because this is a Republic? Or was it Arbitrary? NO! The one who took the napkin first determined all of these things! The rules of this world are determined by that same principle of ‘right or left?’! In a Society like this table, a state of equilibrium, once one makes the first move, everyone must follow! In every era, this World has been operating by this napkin principle. And the one who ‘takes the napkin first’ must be someone who is respected by all. It’s not that anyone can fulfill this role… Those that are despotic or unworthy will be scorned. And those are the ‘losers’. In the case of this table, the ‘eldest’ or the ‘Master of the party’ will take the napkin first… Because everyone ‘respects’ those individuals.”

A magnificent analysis on why Valentine is such a good antagonist. It's obvious that his actions are vile and largely self-centered. He organizes the dangerous Steel Ball Run race, he basically rapes a fourteen-year-old, and he wants to use an ancient artifact to screw over the rest of the world. This is shown well in the Love Train arc, where the "misfortune" that is deflected by Love Train can be seen directly affecting other parts of the world at random. But the fact that the readers look past all that because of Valentine's radiant personality and ambition is what makes him so special. In my opinion, he's one of the best political villains in any form of media. The fact that Steel Ball Run in and of itself is propaganda in his favor is just incredible writing on Araki's part. That's just part of the reason why Part 7 will always be the best (I haven't read Part 8 yet so maybe I'm wrong). Great work, dude! In terms of the people who talk about JoJo, you're one of my favorites. Can't wait to see what you cover next!

its also very interesting that valentine and pucci have a lot of parallels. One of their greatest similarity is the whole "evil without knowing its evil" thing. While being so similar people say valentine did nothing wrong while stating that pucci is a monster. This idea strengthens your point that because araki made valentines strengths the focus, he appears charismatic. Valentine spouts how just he is every second while pucci feels hes above justifying himself to the joestars. ive also noticed that SO and Sbr out of all the parts might have the closest parallels regarding their themes. Since they are both about fatherhood and redemption. I would be interested in seeing a vid where you analyse fatherhood in different parts.

She is also trying to collect the corpse for the sake of her country, but is truly noble in her intentions and ways of achieving that goal. Honestly, the Holy Corpse makes a lot more sense when you think of it as a metaphor for Imperialism, considering that the U.S. was absolutely in the mood to start with at the time (seeing as the annexation of Hawaii by the U.S. actually occured during the real 23rd president's administration, the Spanish American war was about to happen, and the 20th century was non-stop "America wins, but everyone else gets fucked"). Oh, and Valentine's father died during the Mexican-American war, arguably one of the biggest successes for the goal of Manifest Destiny, second only to the Napolenoic Wars with the Louisiana Purchase, but that was more an incidental consequence than a true ambition of the United States, and also one of the least just wars the U.S. has ever fought, which is *really* saying something.

The whole point of his goal is too make America the most powerful country on Earth, putting other countries at risk, he’s the president so I doubt he would care about the well-being of other countries. Patriotism was huge back then so it’s only natural he, and every-one around him would feel the way he does. I’m sure he wouldn’t attack another country just for fun. I think what makes Valentine stand out is he's the only villain in the series, besides Pucci, who has an unselfish goal as an antagonist. Like you said, he publicly gives off an air of focus and confidence, but we as readers are privy to all his instances of being an unfeeling sociopath, an utterly irresponsible leader, a rapist, a cold-blooded murderer and a liar. But, because he feels so strongly that he is right, because pretty much anyone that fights against him has as much blood on their hands as he does and because he has an entire country on his side, he almost seems just in his actions. He is the perfect representation of American jingoism and Machiavellianism. He's not an immortal vampire or a serial killer, he's a real person who was gifted with supernatural power. That's what makes him scarily real.

How come I only found your channel today? Also, dammmnn your analysis on Diavlo is fantastic. All those saying he has no depth simply weren't looking for it, especially thematically.

I know you mentioned his father in a previous video and how he was shaped by his death, but would you consider exploring his past as a soldier too? The fact that he, at the youngest, would have been 14 when he joined the Civil War, must have furthered his ideals of patriotism and his own self-confidence - plus the fact he received the corpse at this time, this shaped him probably as much as his idealistic vision of his father did.

Ultimately, I view Valentine as an interesting question on your morality. While is can just be said that Love Train is merely a weapon against all who don’t receive its benefits, it can be argued that there’s probably a way to use Love Train in a way that will not make it so dangerous, e.g.: Purple Haze Feedback, and how Fugo learns to use the virus to kill a different strain of the virus, as a sort of antidote. Alright, now let’s say your in a group, and your leader is an awful person. They’re only leading you for the ego boost it will give them. They take very risky moves that could very much end badly. But... Nothing bad happens. All the gambles they make pay off, and the fact that they’re only in it for the ego boost, doesn’t really make a difference. This man is a piece of sh*t in his personal life, but when it comes to being a leader, he seems to only be capable of making good calls, at least when it really matters. Do you follow this person? They are pure scum. They would never follow the ideals they preach. But they’re a net benefit to you and your group. What would you do?

No, I think the idea is eventually Valentine's recklessness will cause him to either go mad with power or fuck up and get everybody killed/screwed over, regardless of how lucky his poor decisions seem to be. I would much rather a competent leader who is stable and makes decisions that don't work out perfectly sometimes but ultimately cares about his country as opposed to an incredibly lucky yee-yee-ass egomaniac.

As for evidence of that, look at everyone valentine recruited to do shit for him. Diego, all his bodyguards, the whole Steel Ball Run race and all the casualties in general. They all met a pretty shitty end, due to either Valentine's actions themselves or circumstances he put them in as a result of following him.

I meam in just terms of pure morality there is something to be said for putting aside personal differences and beliefs and distain for greater long term achievement, but there really is only so far that benifit could go before following that person is straight up making you sell any shred of common decency you have and you're just as bad as them if not worse through enabling them for your and your people's benifit. Even if its for the sake of someone besides you, selfish, irresponsible behavior is selfish irresponsible behavior. Now if we bring common logic into it, its literally only a matter of time before that person fucks you over or crosses a line big time with their actions one way or another.

That's a very interesting question. I'd have to say that even if they do benefit the group, if I can't agree or vouch for what they do, then no.

I think I would sit down at a table Put some napkins to our left and some to our right , you know ? Then I would take a deep breath, look that leader square in the eyes..... And take the first napkin !

You talk about how charismatic valentine is but can we just take a moment to talk about how amazing all of your video essays are? Like jesus christ I either didn't think about or didn't believe any of the things you talk about before I watched your videos but I sure as hell do now! Bravo man. Seriously.

It definitely helps to know that in Eyes of Heaven he did go against DIO and his motives were very pure in that situation. So is he a nasty villain, of course but he can do good things, definitely.
