Roger Cook Reports

Жыл бұрын

Friends in the motor trade had alerted the Cook Report to an alarming increase in the number of written off vehicles - often poorly rebuilt from several crashed cars - which were being passed off on unsuspecting motorists. The Cook Report found a ‘retired’ cut and shut specialist who boasted that £8 million worth of bodged cars had passed through his hands. For the programme, he produced a Honda hatchback made of the front end of one write-off and the back end of another. It then went for auction, where it was bought by an unsuspecting dealer. At this point, the team stepped in and made sure nobody lost any money. Then it was crash tested at MIRA - the Motor Industry Research Association. To the horror of the testers and the young couple who were thinking of buying it, the immaculate-looking Honda almost fell in half in a 30mph side impact crash. On the road, the occupants would have been seriously injured or killed outright.
The programme also laid a trap for a car stealing gang which specialised in stealing high-value 4 x 4s, changing their identity and selling them on to new owners who would never actually have title to them. The theft of a £25,000 Shogun was secretly filmed and tracked for some months before being recovered, hidden by the thieves in a suburban garage, presumably in the hope that it would eventually be forgotten about. Then it was time to confront the gang’s ringleader, whose only response was to attack Cook and his crew with a baseball bat.
Another avenue the programme pursued was stolen cars being given the identity of a wreck in a process known as ‘ringing’. That too left the new owner of what looked like a cracking low-mileage Peugeot in a legal limbo. The team painstakingly traced the owners of both the wreck and the ringer and the Peugeot-sponsored rally driver who sold it. This kind of crime was on the increase because the money in the business was vast. Back then, the police estimated that it cost the public over £1.3 billion every year.

This is how documentaries used to be, you actually learned many things in a matter of fact way. If they did this documentary now it would be all based upon shock horror and made up drama. Some gruff voiced presenter setting up scenes and dramatic music and then the ordinary people almost scripted into dramatic scenes playing to camera so in the end you have 10% fact and 90% drama that has nothing to add to the actual story.
@dee74raz

They rarely make investigate tv programmes now in the U.K. It’s too expensive for tv companies to make and it has legal loopholes which can prevent programmes being broadcast, which leads to losses in revenue. Plus tv is different nowadays because of the internet, cable and streaming tv, which has given consumers plenty of choices they want to see, rather than being restricted to 4 channels back in the 80’s.

The test crash didn't split the car in half as they had hoped! The welds were strong and a normal Honda Civic would have suffered the same damage! Either way, very entertaining and old school news report. 👌

Funny how they didn't show the welds after the crash test. And that 'cut and shut' team were a bunch of clowns. You don't just set about cutting 2 cars in half without making measurements first, they didn't even remove any pipework or other fittings from the bodywork first.

@@dr2stroke611 That was all for drama I reckon, behind the scenes somebody spent a while seam welding and layering filler all over it for a blend, plus complete re-fit and re-spray

Absolutely right, the crash test was added for drama and a "normal" Civic would not have fared any better. The welds didn't fail at all, even though it was a common practise, carried out by scum, back in the day.

I'm glad it isn't just me that thought this, that cut and shut took that punch surprisingly well! Fantastic reporting either way but I definitely think the guy who mig'd that civic up wants a pat on the back for his efforts! Amazing that this was even a thing back in the day, it seems like so much work for what they ended up selling the vehicles for, but that could just be my naivety as I was 3 when this documentary was made!

I have worked in the motor trade for 45 years and nobody would ever chop a car in half with a stihl saw if they were going to put it back together again. I blame insurance companies for selling right offs which fuels the the problems in the first place.

When I was used off the road in my beloved, then immac Vectra b by a blind driver into high kerb and wall, my insurers wanted to w/o, but the damage was fixable and rooerly so and thus they 'sild' my car back to me and, at my expense, was indeed sorted, and properly so to rigorous inspection and safety standard, still running but suffering rear arch rust. 99 reg.

Nowadays 'written off' includes insurance companies failing to pay for non-structural panel damage. Insurance companies need to stop making things solely about *their* profits and return it to protecting drivers in the event of an accident.

To be fair their cut n shut stood up to that test really well, they looked to be going way faster that usual test speed.... I had a peugeot 205 gti t1600 hat was a c n s, great car, it took right handers noticably better than left handers though. A right hander was like it had rear wheel steering, a left hander...not so much and the steering took more effort. I did my usual thing of running it into the ground over four or five years then weighing itv in, so i didnt move it on to an unsuspecting punter
