It has rained less than 6 inches in the last 12 months so we started putting a video together on our filtration rates and how they have increased in the drought.

It is fun to see the fruits of soil health. Wednesday the pivot applied an inch. Thursday night/Friday we received an 1.2” rain. Late Saturday night the pivot applied another 0.6”. Sunday morning I drove into the field on the side that had just been irrigated with an Intl M tractor to change a pivot tire. This particular field is a little lighter ground, but cover crops and strip til are definitely helping.

Nice video Jay. Another cool thing to try is put in a probe and see how easily it will go in compared to tillage. A lot of times you can get 5-6’ compared to 3’. Just takes time for people to see the charges that can occur. Drought or not.

Even if it was drought I'd been glad I did some clover undersow. Id only do it if I had drip though. Not pivot. We don't have water rights like that. Even without water rights I'd still undersow. the particles just float if you don't and it undercuts all that good work without a covercrop.

Good question and it is tough to answer. 1 it’s hard for people to change 2 if no one in your community is doing it people don’t want to stand out 3 if you are the only one doing it in your community it is challenging because you don’t know what will work and what doesn’t. What I learn from someone at a conference may or may not work here.

Saying food is more nutrient dense when crops are planted using no tillage is not an accurate claim. I’m primarily no till but have to work all the ground my cattle are wintered on bc of localized compaction which I bet is the situation most farmers are in. I don’t know any farmers practicing recreational tillage except the local old timers plow days
@youngredangus6041
@youngredangus6041 2 жыл бұрын
In a system where you are putting in living roots in the ground year round, not tilling the ground, adding biology with from Johnson Sue and using cover crops most definitely produces crops that are more nutrient dense. It’s not just notil you have to be doing the whole system.

Exactly which nutrients are more concentrated in crops grown in fields where cover crops & no till are used? Don’t get me wrong - I 100% agree with cover crops & notill where we can bc it is much better for soil health & water infiltration & availability of both micro & macro nutrients. This higher availability does not make the following grain crop “more nutrient dense”. In addition, problems like slugs & seedling diseases often reduce yields - and yields are what pays the bills. When non-farmers read such blanket statements about “higher nutrition or more nutrient dense” - they automatically begin criticizing we farmers who, for valid reasons, may choose to work ground & use more traditional practices. I had a new rental farm owner tell me he was learning farming from the internet (after all, anyone can be a farmer bc you don’t have to be that smart) & he forbid me to use roundup, all NPK, wouldn’t allow any manure bc of potential ground water contamination, no gmo traited seeds… and was going to increase my rental rate to $250/acre from $150 bc farmers are getting rich on high grain prices. And then he told me I needed to look into purchasing electric powered farm equipment bc I was causing climate change. And this guy drives 2 hours each way to golf 3x per week while he works at home on his computer.

Hank did you read the article? A plant gets micronutrients from mycorrhiza fungi bringing it all the micronutrients it needs. A plant attracts fungi to bring it what it needs by exudates and by sending out signals in the soil. In a traditional system with tillage you kill fungi. If there isn’t any fungi in the soil a plant will only be able to absorb the micronutrients that are in contact with its roots making it nearly impossible to raise a crop without synthetic fertilizer. Multiple studies show when you add synthetic phos it hinders root growth and the ability of a plant to put out exudates. You can see that in the video I posted about raising 200 bushel corn with no Nitrogen and No phos and in the video “making compost extract with bio 5 extractor.” (I think it’s in both Maybe just one) So if you don’t have exudates a plant will only take up the Nitrogen and phos that is applied synthetically. So the plant has Phosphorus, Nitrogen and Potassium but is deficient in almost every other micronutrients The compost we applied with Johnson Su extract contained 675 species of fungi and bacteria. 87% of those species made made inorganic nitrogen plant available. All of the micronutrients we made more available to the pant by the bacteria and fungi in the compost. When we do no-till with cover crops and diversity of species we increase the levels of the bacteria and fungi in our fields naturally. I use compost extract because it brings back quickly It’s the increase of the biology through doing all of the practices that I stated above that increase nutrient density(including notil).
