Lyrics to "The Cooling":
The first thing to go
it might surprise you to know
it's not the blood from the muscle
or the strength from the bone
Between you and me
it's the simplest thing
it's the warmth of the body
when the soul is at home
It's the heat
and you struggle to keep it inside
but it seems
it's stealing away in the night
-
When you first realized
that your body had died
you went to the tunnel
to wait there alone
And you stood there for days
but the light never came
so you took your poor body
and you walked it back home
Now you're popping some pills
oh to fight back the chill
and you're picking some flowers
to help with the stench
But no manner of blush
will be quite enough
to cover the pallor
that spreads 'cross your skin
and they said
that hell would be fire and smoke
but in the end
it's this cooling that scares you the most
-
There's a pretty young thing
with a pretty gold ring
and she talks to you every night
'cause she don't know you're dead
And you can't figure how
when you're walking through town
no one's noticed the knife
sticking out of your head
Now you're living in fear
that sometime this year
they will finally notice
that you're heart doesn't beat
And they'll dig you a grave
and they'll put you away
but you still won't be ready
you'll grow back like a weed
Like a weed
and you wonder what you're waiting for
'cause it seems
there's no honor in death anymore

"They said that Hell would be fire and smoke but in the end it's the cooling that scares you the most." Flawless. I had been revisiting this song a couple times a year but time does what it does and I let a few years go by without doing so. So glad I came back to it.. it's like a vitamin or mineral that I don't realize I'm deficient in until I hear it again. I cherish songs like that. Thanks, Reina.. I'll be back again.

I thank Jesus for y'all and your generation and you'll be in my prayers. Not only for His Blessings throughout your lives, but that each of you somehow will find the rest and comfort found only in the blood! As for your anxieties Rachelle (and Toni), we all have them but if we believe His Truth and read Second Timothy 1:7 the peace that surpasses all understanding gives us strength and courage to face whatever confronts us! I love you already and I don't even know you........yet. God bless you all!! 👋

When I listen to this song I picture the old homeless man in the film groundhog day and what must be going through his mind as his life slowly leaves him. The homeless man died but his soul was stuck in limbo because there was no one to bury his body, he goes back to his dead body and tries to cover it with flowers to hide the stench and walks through town with a knife sticking out of his head (probably figuratively, since I feel he died of a chill, being homeless) and he worries that one day the people will find his dead body and bury him and this little "life" as a ghost that he has will be gone too. What a song, masterpiece truly!! Right up there with Mark knopfler's "the ragpickers dream"

I'm just speechless. What an incredibly thoughtful, philosophical. sweetlly sad piece! Somehow related to the Halloween Ball in one of those unseen ways life has. Nothing quite like a waltz to give us a sense of trying to take flight, of lifting off like when your dreams allow you put out your arms and fly, but not quite. Profound and beautiful, so is this song. You're amazing. Wow!

Yet another subtly brilliant song, rare in its choice of subject and absolutely unique in its sensibilities. Most people are shocked if they happen to create something brilliant, and then the shock paralyzes them. But you just keep churning 'em out, relentlessly.
