The Copperhead Snake: Dangerous or Misunderstood?

Copperheads are some of my favorite snakes, and I'd argue among the most beautiful reptiles in North Carolina, but they get a bad reputation for being mean snakes in the media and boring snakes in the herping community for no reason.
While it's true that they are the most common venomous snake in the Southeast and are responsible for the majority of venomous snakebites, that's just a testament to their adaptability as humans increasingly urbanize the landscape and eliminate species that can't keep up with the rapid change.
These vipers can be found in places where no other venomous snakes seem able to persist - even the highly disturbed, McMansion filled biological desert that we've created and continue to expand upon.
To me, the fact that something so beautiful and cryptic continues to survive and thrive in such a wide variety of conditions is remarkable and exciting, not scary.
Full video featuring this ridiculously beautiful copperhead is up on The Wild Report KZfaq right now!

For clarification, you should still seek medical attention if bitten by a copperhead, as with any envenomation from an animal that you are having a negative reaction to. I am not trying to tell you that copperhead bites cannot be dangerous, but the reality is that the venom does have similar potency to bee venom despite copperheads producing a much higher venom yield. Additionally, copperhead venom is hemotoxic, which can lead to tissue necrosis in some cases. Please watch the entire video if you are interested in learning more about these snakes!

And you just putting it forward as if they are not very dangerous is absolutely misinformation. You might be able to argue that the potency drop for drop is more similar to a bee sting, but not only does it have a much higher yield as you said it also inject the Venom much deeper. how many bee stings do you know of that put someone in the hospital that's not already allergic? The answer is virtually zero... Edgar's the percentage of time that you are going to get stung on the foot by a bee and not be able to walk? The amount of people spreading that copperheads aren't very venomous and aren't really dangerous, is insane. If it's even relatively close to a bee sting I'd love to see you guys let a copperhead bite you hahaha. Your channel would absolutely blow up and you would absolutely have a viral video with minimum of a million views or more... the reality is none of you will actually do it because you all know 100% that getting bit by a copperhead is nowhere near getting stung by a bee. It's not 10 times stronger or 100 times stronger, it's so incredibly stronger to the point that it can be life-changing or even end your life if it bites you. You could sit there and let bees sting you a couple hundred times and you'll be fine, but one bite from that Copperhead is a different story

You can go into ansphylaxis from any injected protein. O think it can occur with ingesting some medications also. Anti-venin is made from horse serum. You can go into anaphylaxis from that also. Caution is always the word of the day but from s comparative aspect, bites from copperheads are rarely fatal for adults. But it CAN occur.

My personal life experience tells me that these snakes are very dangerous. They are camouflaged so well that when my friend's grandmother got bit by one, 2 other people almost got bit because they couldn't see it even knowing right where it was. She almost lost an arm. It swelled up like a balloon. According to her, the arm was never right again. My uncle, who was logging, got bit by one he had tissue death and lost his hand. The only 2 people I've ever known who got bit, both had a very negative experience with it. I don't think I've ever heard a copperhead bite compared to a bee sting. Maybe my life experience is anecdotal, maybe the bite is not that bad in most cases. But from what I've seen, it can be very devastating even if it does not kill you.

The thing about copperheads is, they are the one snake that will not warn you. Their camouflage is super effective, they are difficult to see, and there is not an aural (sound) or display (cottonmouth) warning.

They will definitely warn you but you may not be able to hear it. All snakes rattle their tail but unless they are in dry leaves you won't hear it plus now days everyone is running around with ear buds in and they wouldn't hear a train coming. That being said you are right about the camouflage they aren't more aggressive they are just the most stepped on snake and any and all snakes will absolutely bite you when you step on it and break it's bones or accidentally grab it while picking up sticks or brush. They are the leaf litter king of the east and virtually disappear in most environments.

In Oklahoma same scenario. Working outdoors around foothills with trees these things encouraged and they are very defensive. Very snappy fast to strike . These snakes will strike multiple times on occasion. I’ve seen this happen when a copperhead is startled and immediately spins into defensive mode. We took a shovel we had and turned it then dropped down in its close position and that snake struck the shovel multiple times swiftly. I’ve found encounters tend to be mostly startling to these snakes because they like hanging out on pathway edges in the woods by paths in leaves as they blend in so darn well

I watched a video where a keeper/handler cared for a larger female. The guy had to approach super slow stating you must present yourself calm. These snakes sense anxiety. This female instantly was agitated. The few folks I know who have been been bit said it was like a stomach virus as body rejection of the venom . The bite they said burned substantially then swelled then came the upset stomach.

I wonder if they can control the amount of venom they inject. I’ve heard it is not unusual to get a dry bite. I’ve heard it is a bad bite if they inject venom and I’ve heard it isn’t so bad. After youtube studying I don’t think snakes match their breed. I’ve seen dark coppers look as dark as a cottonmouth with patterning. I’m beginning to believe snakes are like people, each one is an individual. We have eyes, hands,’ feet, torsos, have live births, are capable of learning, Physically we are similar but color, hair, size are varied.

Their venom is similar to bee venom. Keyword "SIMILIAR". Not the same. Both also produce different yield. A Copperhead can produce roughly 43mg of venom, (number will vary on a number of factors) where as a bee can produce roughly .15mg of venom. Thats a difference of nearly 250x. Example Coke and Bang, both similar in that they contain caffeine. However if you were to drink 3-4 cokes in quick order you'd be fine, where as with Bang which has nearly 10x the caffeine content, drinking 3-4 in quick order would cause sever and possibly life threatening health affects. Further more the mortality rate of copperhead bites is less than 1% they are rarely fatal, and most fatalities are the results of allergic reactions to the venom. Example, a man in Missouri in 2014 was reported to have been killed by a Copperhead bite, after he went into anaphylactic shock roughly 3mins after bein envenomated. From 1993-1999 in the state of Missouri there were a reported 596 bites from venomous snakes. None of which were fatal. This man previously mentioned was the first reported death attributed to a Copperhead in the state of Missouri since 1965. TL;DR Similar dose not equal the same. Less than 1% is still not 0, and while bites are likely not fatal they are painful, and can cause other sever heath affects. Venomous snakes should be treated with the same respect as a loaded gun, and medical attention should be sought if bitten.

What are the symptoms of a copperhead snakebite? Symptoms of a copperhead snakebite include pain, progressive swelling, skin redness, bruising, and blood blisters. Some people experience nausea, vomiting, weakness, low blood pressure, and bleeding. There might be no symptoms of a copperhead bite, since 20-25% of bites are “dry bites.” That means the snake did not inject any venom. Another 15% of copperhead bites are trivial bites, meaning symptoms are minor. There will usually be two puncture marks following a copperhead snakebite, although sometimes only one. Symptoms evolve over 8-12 hours. Serious systemic effects are rare.

I see at least 50 a year here in NW Houston, Tx with 119 being the most. I rescue, relocate and photograph them. I've had some stunning specimens. I need to make a post about them on my FB tomorrow and show the pics from this yr and years past. Boyd Everitt is my name there. Yours is a good looking one for sure

That is the problem with the copperhead is that it's too calm. While very well camouflage, But the worst part is they remain motionless until you're almost on top of them. That is why More people are bit by this species than any other

What an absolute beauty! We had one have her babies every year in august under our house. Her name was Isabella. For 9 years she showed up. Then no more. I still miss her. Some of her offspring have come back but never to have their young. Awesome snakes! 😎

Ive sat next to one on a rock on the banks of the Upper Gauley in West Bygod Virginia and ate my bologna sammich and he never moved. Liked the warm rock as much as I did.. I have never met an aggressive one anywhere in Appalachia and I have seen hundreds of them.

OH THATS A GORGEOUS COPPERHEAD!!! I've always wanted to find one in the wild, they are native to my area but they're extremely hard to find. Though a friend of mine lives in Virginia and also loves snakes, so one day I'd like to go out looking for copperheads there with her. Absolutely gorgeous animal, thanks for sharing this with us!!!

I used to have a gorgeous one on my property for quite a few years in Alabama. It stayed in a particular area and I saw it yearly. I also had a Timber rattler. Early last Fall I saw a Kingsnake on my property. This year, June 2024, I haven't seen my Copperhead nor my Timber. I assume the Kingsnake got em. Both were excellent rodent killers. Now, until some more move in, I'm the rodent killer.

Here in the Missouri Ozarks the copperhead is a darker tan and can be aggressive if provoked. What we have to really watch out for is the very aggressive water moccasin. Your copperhead has beautiful patterns on it's skin.

I took a canoe trip down the Spring River in Ark. Pulled over on a sand bar to eat some lunch. I needed to take a poop so I found a private place in the woods. Pulled my pants down and squatted. Looked down between my legs and a copperhead was coiled up read to strike my bung hole. I sprang up like a rocket leaving the launching pad and ran back to the group with my shorts and underwear around my ankles. True story.

As someone who has caught snakes since i was 10, and have caught, rescued too many copper heads to even count. They are surprising chill snakes and rarely bite unless stepped on or if they truly feel threatened. I was bit 1 time on my hand by a copperhead when i was 14 and it was my fault (wasnt even looking for snakes was just cleaning up a pile of leaves and didnt see it bc it was camouflaged in the leaves and it got me right between my thumb and pointer finger)

It’s really unhealthy to live in a home with rodent infestation. These serpents are happy to help. Don’t run over them as they bask on the road. (Unless you enjoy rodents and their incessant activity. )

Yeah, no reason. The fact they use striking as a warning leading to the most bites of all venomous snake bites surely doesn't warrant the reputation. They're ambush predators, so of course they're calm and docile.

My wife was in the middle of stepping on a copperhead during a hike. I saw it at the last second and pulled her back mid foot fall. It was coiled up and camouflaged so well the dog must have walked past it sniffing and exploring at least three times. It was so tensed and coiled if she had moved any further i believe it would have bit her. To this day I am not sure how we avoided a snake bite.
