The thing that draws me to tensura is that in many anime, monsters are used as evil beings for the sake of being evil to humans, Tensura confronts this by showing the struggles, ambitions, emotions the monsters go through themselves, showing that they are quite similar to humans but with a different culture.

Just a minor correction, not all skills are born from the soul even Unique skills can be etched onto the body. A good example of this would be with Shogos unique skill berserk, which was etched into his body and this is why Razen was able to use Berserk. Rimuru discussed this in one of the later volumes of the LN, skills can be acquired through hardwork and effort which will be etched into the body, but those skills are inferior to the ones etched into the soul

Meanwhile, Benimaru obtained Poison Resistance by eating Shion's dishes.

As far as I know there are a few methods for monsters to evolve: 1. When given a name by someone; 2. By meeting certain conditions; 3. By having a link with someone who has evolved. If I’m not mistaken, Ranga actually did all of these at different times. Of course, in the anime we never got to know what skills the other monsters acquired when they evolved.

They traveled to this new world in their own bodies. Rimuru reincarnated and was born in this new world. His soul traveled over by itself. That’s one of the reasons his soul is so strong.

This series really has a lot to offer.

As skills get stronger they get closer to the soul, for example weak unique skills are attached to the body, like Shogo’s unique skills were only part of his body, which is why Razen was able to obtain his despite destroying his soul, where stronger skills will be part of the outer parts of the soul, and ultimate skills are connected directly to what is basically the ego, which is why they in most cases can’t be taken directly.

The reason why tensura's skill are fascinating because of how it can evolve into a much stronger skill Btw my favorite skill is Wisdom Lord Raphael (because you got a op skill and a waifu at the same time) and I prefer of how simple it is

The skill system in this anime is really interesting. Skills combing with each other to form greater skills is a good concept, and skills can get very very op (see Ciel and Void god Azathoth.) All very cool, hope the anime continues to be this great, as I enjoyed the web novel and light novel very much, so here's to hoping the anime can match up. Edit: Also there are like a hundred unique skills we know of compared to very few skills in the common category and the few dozen in the extra, which is ironic.

The more the story progress, the more you have to explain lol like: Majins Demon lords Champions Heroes True dragons Angels and Demons Undead Elves Phantoms Anti-magic and Anti-skills etc.

It's so great when authors develop systems like these. It comes from a desire to give the consumer more substance. You can slowly build on a system that exists in the real world and put your fantasy twist on it, it makes every system like this so special even if they are flawed. It's that specialness, attention to detail, and desire to keep the consumer immersed that make fantasy systems an art form.

Ultimate Skills and Unique Skills can be somewhat classified into two: the reincarnated and the evolutionary. reincarnated means that it has is previous user that died, and evolutionary one is the one that is entirely new in the system. Examples of reincarnated one are Wisdom King Raphael and the evolutionary one is the King of Gluttony Belzeebub.

Remember he said that Rimuru has already a strong soul when he's reincarnated, it's like a clue from who he really is and the ultimate skills he will posses in the future belongs to someone who's in god tier

Razen can't take skills enscribed on the soul, he can only take skills enscribed on the body, because he replaces their soul with his own.

So glad you're covering this show, I came to this channel for Overlord a while back but I stay for the detailed analysis of everything else

Humans can have many skills but don't have the required reserves to use them. Monsters can have few skills but do have the required reserves to use them. Skills are part of the soul. Reserves are part of the body. Rimiru has a purely human soul but has a monster body. He really did get the best combo.

Tensura's Ultimate Skill system is my favorite power system in the whole world. Like, I think I like the story and stuff from Spider Isekai more, but Ultimate Skills are just so sick cuz they are named after real gods and higher beings.

I don’t think you touched on this, but naming gives monsters access to skills possessed by the master. The type of name they get also affects their evolution. Ranga’s name was based on the family name tempest which evolved the dire wolves into tempest wolves. That’s why he evolved skills based on the storm dragon.

I think its funny that you don't mention Manas, as they can evolve from an ultimate skill, and is basically just a sentient skill with emotions thats inside someone, and is typically more powerful than their ultimate counterpart

The mention of his powerful soul is what allowed him to have two unique skills upon reincarnation also calls into question exactly how powerful since he basically got great sage before he even reincarnated, which means he got access to the system way earlier somehow.

You got some things wrong. 1.) not all skills are etched into the souls, almost all common, extra skills are not etched into the soul. Some unique skill or even ultimate skills aren't etched into the soul 2. Shogo is one example of having 2 unique skills in his body rather than soul, Razen killed his soul yet his unique skills remained because they were in the body not in soul. If he had those w unique skills in the soul then they'd have disappeared alongside the soul.

I think that tensura has one of the most complex power systems and the skills can get very in depth

there is a 5° evolutionary stage a skill can reach in tesura tough, the "manas" stage where the skill literaly develops its own wil and emotions, thus becoming something like a simbiotic soul attached to the user soul if i recall correctly, at least in the wn, these are all the manas that appear: Ciel, Chronoa, Velda, Lucia and maybe Zero, but im not sure if that last one actually counts

Hey with the upcoming gacha "Slime Isakei Memories" Rimuru has a "daughter" that apparently has Predator and Great Sage. So just wondering your thoughts on if Uniques could be hereditary. Or I have a few other theories but waiting for the game to see how it plays out in the story. There is another Original character as well, so sure those 2 will have a back story. Is being written by the original author Fuse, so could be a way they add new info to the manga/anime consumers that get skipped over by the LN.

I'm not sure if this is a web novel thing only but at some point Guy says that simply possessing an Ultimate Skill makes the user nearly immune to lesser skills and magic.

Need to point out that other Otherworlders are not usually reincarnated. They were summoned. Isekai'd. That's why veldora said that rimuru is a reincarnated one. Not a summoned one. That probably added to his advantage from the beginning.

There's a one crucial problem in this explanation - skills *don't consume* magicules when a human/monster gains one, but become *engraved into the soul* of the individual, "taking a part of capacity" of master's soul. AND that capacity is equal to the individual maximum capacity of magicules. Otherwise - if skills took magicules themselves - then the monster/human with a lot of skills would be very weak in the actuality, barely able to even move... but we have Rimuru, as our first and foremost counter to this case. It's much easier to think about it if you imagine a soul of each of Tensura's individual as two identical barrels tied to each other - one with, for example, water (as magicules), and the other with sand (as skills). So, when we adding/taking water from one barrel we do not doing the same or opposite with sand in the other.

The big thing that makes the Nation Tempest so dangerous is that he can freely name monsters and demons infinitely. What I mean by that is that after Gelmud Named Rigur's older brother, Gabil, and Geld's Dad; in between each one he had to wait a minimum of 3-4 months this is how it works for everyone else, EVERYONE ELSE EXCEPT RIMURU!!! This is why Milim is so interested in him. And in part 2 of season 2 and on we'll see why Ramiris Veldora Gazel and Sarion take him as a totally cheating existence. He literally can name Monsters indefinitely and create a Nation no other nation would dare to provoke. Oh right I for got to mention this naming not only makes your subordinates stronger but the more you name the more quickly your Magicule capacity increases, so Rimuru with like 300,000 named subordinates is really scary. And then you add Supply and Receive to give each other skills? ***Spoilers*** ***Spoilers*** ***Spoilers*** Particularly after the East Empire get involved. That's Volume 12 we just finished Volume 5.

A (not so short) blurb about ultimate skills with some minor spoilers that will be revealed in part 2 of the anime. All knowledge here is based off of the WN, so some stuff might actually be different as I haven't read the LN, but I'd think it should still apply. (has a TL DR at the end if you're lazy) So, there is absolutely no case in which an ultimate skill can be inferior to a unique skill. There can be cases where an extra skill might be better than a unique skill, but due to the very nature of an ultimate skill, and this should be revealed in the second half of season 2 at the walpurgis banquet, but a possessor of an ultimate skill cannot be harmed by anything that is below the level of an ultimate skill. In other words, if one has an ultimate skill, they can only ever be defeated by another possessor of an ultimate skill. In order for unique skill, or even just magic or mundane arts to affect them, they would need to purposely lower their defenses. This can actually be explained using the strength of ones soul. Since possessing an ultimate skill indicates that your soul has a certain level of strength (I specify soul and not magicules as humans can also obtain ultimate skills), simply nothing can affect your soul if it does not posses a similar strength. OK, that was long winded, so, second thing about ultimate skills. It very rare for a new ultimate skill to be created. Unlike unique skills which are born from strong desires and other conditions, ultimate skills are forces of nature that exist. For example, wisdom lord raphael was possed by someone else a long time ago and it simply never found an acceptable host since that time. Just as ultimate skills have names, (raphael and beelzebub being the only two since in the anime as of yet, but there are others such as wrathful king satan, judgement lord michael, barrier lord uriel, etc) ultimate skills also posses a form of ego. Rapheal is the most distinct since it is basically defined by its ego (ego as in personality) but an ultimate skill can only ever be obtained if the ultimate skill acknowledges the person wishing to receive it. To give another example, beelzebub is the lord of gluttony. We have seen Rimuru be gluttonous many times, hell, he eats food even when he has no need at all for material sustenance. He devoured the orc lords sins. Rimuru is continuously eating, hence it was very easy for raphael to convince beelzebub to join Rimuru, yet even raphael piggybacked on the power of the harvest festival and gave beelzebub a sacrifice. TLDR: 1. Ultimate skills are OP, if you have one you can only be harmed by someone else who has one. 2. Ultimate skills are basically forces of nature. New ones don't get created all that often, it's more that the named force accepts an individual to be worthy of its power.
