Starkers is short-sighted to dismiss the English battle-cry at Hastings as "grunting". The "official" English battle cry there was "Holy Cross", but once the infantry blocs engaged with the mass exchange of blades hacking, thrusting, chopping against wood, metal and man in the line battle the more ancient "OUT-OUT-OUT-OUT" rhythmic chant was used, similar to a rugby scrum chant today of "1-2-3-4", or in tennis at a high-stress moment concentrating all your thought upon counting the points - "15, 30, 40, Game". It's a means of clearing & focusing one's mind of anything but winning & getting the job done like a machine. It comes from a deep understanding of human psychology & is not to be underestimated.

Mr Starky misses two pieces of information in the reasons for choosing Bath. Firstly just nearby is Dyrham, where the King of Wessex had fought the Welsh in a titanic clash and defeated them in order to bring Saxons already living in the area under his protection. A defeat from which they had never recovered. Second nearby Wells was where Ine (ancestor of Alfred) had founded a minster there.

@DailyCorvid

You probably think that _every word that doesn't agree_ with you is abuse. It's such a crap attitude, really poisonous. Have you ever been abused, outside of people just talking normally on the internet? You may view abuse slightly more sincerely if you saw what it actually is. Making a video about historical events, which you did not agree with is not abusive. Abusive would have been making a video called "Your Monarchy sucks" and comparing our great and powerful leader to somebody elses short fat useless ugly poverty stricken one legged Donkey king. For example lol see that would be abusive, but he did not do that. He just spoke with dignity about our history, if you find our history offensive and abusive I would suggest that you get therapy.

@Moonraker You are correct, "of arms" is incorrect, "at arms" is the correct term. However "Serjeant" or "Sergeant" is an acceptable spelling. @Moonraker I do not mind in the least your pointing out my misspelling of a word, especially one that is so arcane and archaic. I am just very thrilled to have a civil conversation on-line. So many of these conversations end with the other party insulting me without presenting a cogent argument for their point of view. Then when I point this out to them they never reply back with any facts to support their argument. So thanks again for such a pleasant exchange of words. Best wishes to you sir.

@DailyCorvid
@DailyCorvid Жыл бұрын
No it wasn't a coincidence, and no it's not some odd sounding conspiracy. It's actually totally normal expected behaviour. The acting Monarch has to brings the news of the previous Monarch's death to Rome personally. The reason is that if there is no 'Defender Of The Faith' in place, then the Pope has temporary regency over the Church. It's actually in the Bible, if you have one handy you can read all about it in there. Not describing the current day arrangement but rather, explaining how the Holy authority travels between people so there is no unbroken chain of leadership. When you consider that "Protestants" were originally leading a protest against non Orthodox practices, aka heretics of the Catholics - it's not unusual at all. Ultimately they all bend the knee to Christ as the Son Of God, the schism is purely administrative only. The Pope is effectively the King of Rome, and therefore equally authorative to our King of Britain and they employ one another for various ritual worshipping tasks and such. Think of it like this : If you are one of only two dentists in town - you need the second dentist to sort out your teeth whilst you sort of everybody elses. The King goes to the Pope when he needs to confess sins, and likewise the Pope will confess only to the defender of the Faith (King Charles III currently).
@Dave_Sisson
@Dave_Sisson Жыл бұрын
I think it's more likely he is discreetly Orthodox. His dad was Orthodox and his grandmother was an Orthodox nun. Charles has been seen crossing himself in the Orthodox manner and for the first time a Byzantine hymn was included at his coronation. Now there's some material for the conspiracy theorists to get excited over!

Starkey has much of interest to say, but it's the stuff in parentheses that sometimes makes me think he 's not reliable. At one point here he lashes out at Ukraine Pres Zelenskyy as the best example of toxic masculinity. Is there really not a better example to hand that Starkey could have thought of, like Putin the bare-chested invader? And how does his mind work that he turns on the victim first and not the aggressor? When I hear him say things like that I assume that similar warped biases are in play in his description of something that happened, say, in the 13th century
@AntonBryl
@AntonBryl Жыл бұрын
I think Dr Starkey meant to be ironic about the concept of toxic masculinity, not to be negative about Zelensky. He made a really odd point though, indeed. In the times of peace, Zelensky projected kindly and compassionate persona (before going into politics he was an actor and, among other things, voiced Paddington Bear in the Ukrainian version). In the times of war, he never refrains from showing emotions. He is as remote from the stereotype of toxic masculinity as it gets, to be honest.

A royal Republic, really? Now I've heard some porky pies from historians but this is the final straw. Now I know for certain historians make up these stories. Does Starkey know what a Republic is? Even in the 21st century I'm very aware that UK is still run as a feudal system with a nod to something that appears to be democracy. The monarchy still largely influences the lives of ordinary people. Parliament enacts whatever the monarch wishes. Ordinary people are made to keep the monarch through taxation whether they like or support the monarchy. Ordinary people are deliberately kept poor due to deflation and political machinations so that the rich can continue to get richer while the rest are denied entry into a club that denies,dignity in life. What we have I'd a "give the dog a bone" politics. Enough to keep us quiet while the rich figure out how to keep screwing the rest of us
