As a recently retired organic farmer I can honestly say you are only barely scratching the surface of this subject. We were treated as the enemy and constantly paid higher fees (10x) . During the organic salad contamination incident the corporate guys were allowed to study their own problem and blamed it on us small farms. Regulatory hammers come down and we are driven from market share. During the federal organic certification meetings we were lied to and a couple of years later the corporate organic processed food hit the market. Covid took our restaurant markets and decimated our local farmers markets. Their aggression is somewhat passive but constant. Corruption is rampant.

Organic isn't a viable practice just be sustainable and be chemical aware rather than Ignorant or flat out risk everyone else's crops by being organic thus being unable to deal with real contagions in crops. Organic is essentially the Kneejerk reaction and up there with PETA/Vegan-Nazi's for lack of consideration of all of the facts.

Maybe in US but in most european countries school lunch has gotten a lot healthier. And at least in my country school caffeteries are supposed to offer healthy alternatives in addition to regular snacks. Additionally it is likely processed high sugar snacks will be banned from schools in the near future. I recommend you demand the same from your local government...

YEARS ago, like 15 years ago, I bought some Grassland Beef online. That was the company name btw. A guy at my gym told me about it. So instead of buying gear, I got some grass fed beef lol. It was amazing. The thing that sealed it for me was when my cat jumped on a little hunk of the ground beef that had spilled out of the pan. She jumped on like a lion on a gazelle and darted away with it. I had never seen her doing anything like it with any other food, cat treats included! I kinda forgot about it. I need to get more of grass fed meat.

I went carnivore and felt great felt the effects I did the diet to a T didn’t deviate did intermittent fasting with it but would gorge on some beef when I eat. AnyWho I found a local farmer grass finished grass raise beef and have loaded my fridge with it I eat it still every day even though I’ve deviated from my diet but what has confirmed That me is awesome are my animals. My dog my cat and it’s two kittens we’re just sitting at my feet the kittens were meowing so much because I gave them a little bit of raw beef when I was making my patties the other day. I felt bad because I had already packaged it and put it in the fridge but I’ll tell you what my animals never act that way for any kind of cat treat in a bag any kind of dog food anything that meat raw meat had them going wild. Makes me believe I need to get my animals off of store-bought cat and dog food and figure out how to feed them on a carnivore diet

When I adopted a plant based diet about ten years ago, my laundry list of health issues were all cited. I do it correctly. Most of the time, I avoid excessively processed food and consume only whole plant based foods. At the same time, I feed my dog a balanced (mostly) raw meat diet. I also love and respect hunters, local farmers, and fishermen. People I know who eat whole food (including animal products) plant based diets are extremely healthy too. I also know plant based and animal product consuming people who eat way too much, consume lots of processed food, have alcohol problems, and barely move their bodies. They are very unhealthy. In general, eating preferably high quality, whole food plant based diets (with animal products or not) are probably the most healthy people on the planet. I hate to see people bashing one “side” or the other. It’s up to each of us to eat and live in a way that makes us look and feel optimal. I respect everyone’s choices and advocate for eating as balanced as possible and exercising consistently.

Have almost the same story to share, except that both my uncles died at 42 (colorectal cancer, a major risk factor of red meat) and 48, my grandfather at 70 and my grandmothers three brothers at 58, 60 and 63. My grandmother is still alive at 75 and thinks she is healthy, but is clearly not. All lived on small farms, eating self grown organic food and a ton of meat from their pigs and chickens.

I started a small farm for our family, chickens and ducks for meat. It is SOOOOO much work. The fact that we can go into a grocery store and get a roasted chicken ready to go for $10 is CRAZY. When you know how much work goes into a bird, buying a bird for $10 is a miracle. Its provided by industrial farming which is also not humane to the animals. I spend over $10 in food to raise a bird, let alone the price to raise and care for it, kill it, pluck it, freeze it.

You are so right, the true value of food is lost on many people these days. One of my friends is an amateur bee keeper and I hunt deer for much of my meat, we often share stories of people we know asking for "any spare" product as if it's doing us a favour. We share if we see them understand and appreciate it, but as soon as it's taken for granted the supply is cut off.

Some South African scientist demonstrated that having groups of cattle graze in areas and then move onto the next are great at reversing desertification in Africa because they eat the dead grass off and fertilize new growth. The lack of grazing cattle caused the grass to die off and strangle out new growth. At first he thought the elephants were causing desertification by packing down the soil and he had 300,000 killed. He said he was so wrong and it brought tears to his eyes for his bad call.

This is so interesting. I'm 31 years old and have really come to a point in my life where nothing makes me feel joy. Nothing intrigues me. I have felt this way for so long, (which I have for years) and because of this I can find myself being a consumer, spending money on things I can't afford when I have very little money and even debt. I've searched for peace and health through sex, exercise, food, consumerism and even obsessing over home decor and skin care which doesn't make me fulfilled. I have this passion for health, believe consuming meat, fruit, and minimal veggies is optimal for human health but the environment and society we live in makes it damn near impossible to break free of food addiction. I feel trapped. I know there is more to life then feeling the way I do. I think maybe it would be a great idea to seek other people who share my beliefs so I have a support system to get me healthy again. I am height/weight proportionate, have really dark circles around my eyes, have chronic inflamed eyes and some mild auto-immune issues over the years. There's even more symptoms I could go over but would rather not share. I always tell my family and friends that I need to go to Thailand and do a 7 day coconut water fast, start fresh, eat only fruit and meat and organs going forward and I think I know what I need.. But I'm overwhelmed with some debt. I know KZfaq isn't a personal diary, so whoever reads this thanks for listening. I guess what i'm trying to also say is that these podcasts intrigue me. I feel connected and in my element listening to these topics. They're true to my heart. Thanks for what you do Joe.

I have been eating Whole Food Plant Based "WFPB" diet for 3 years. Many people get that mixed up with Vegan. Vegans still can eat all the unhealthy processed foods and oils including those Beyond Burgers. I'm not trying to save the world...just trying to add a few extra months are years onto my life. My husband, a few friends and several family made the switch. Unnecessary weight gone (literally down to high school weight), heart meds/disease gone, RA pain almost non existent, less migraines and no more back pain are just a few of the results from my little circle. We are all 50's through 70 's and healthier now than ever. . Look at obesity in US. Problem is the portions. Way back before the obesity crisis on your plate was just a small portion of meat. The portions have changed and are now huge which I think is not good for anyone. I like that they have vegan choices in schools, but it shouldn't be the only choice. Food is a touchy subject...just like politics.

Angie- I’m plant-based too. I did a ton of research before I started and it’s paid off well in my health. I never ate a lot of processed foods, but getting rid of eggs, dairy and meat has made me feel better than ever (and look younger too). I still give my children the option of eating whatever they want. They are in their 20’s and can make up their own minds, but at least they understand what a plant-based diet is and why I’ve chosen it. It’s not always an easy diet. I wonder how well received it is in schools.

I have ulcerative colitis, which was very severe about 7yrs ago. I had been following the advice of several doctors and not eating red meat, and no dairy. I didn't feel better, and had dropped down to 90lbs (I'm 5'9")! One day I had a conversation with a gentleman with MS who owned a health store. He recommended that I stay away from poultry all-together, consume real cheese, organic whole milk, and grass-fed grade A beef--along with organic produce. I decided to give it a shot, and within weeks I was feeling great and was putting on weight (mostly muscle!). Here I am 7 years later, following the same diet, eating high quality beef 5 days a week, and I have a healthy weight, under 8% body fat, and my energy levels are through the roof. I think it has a lot to do with quality. Zero processed foods, no microwave, no fast food, no soda or added sugar. I appreciate conversations on this topic, as I think diet is often an afterthought, when in reality, it is the most important thing for good health---along with stress!!

I've been selling meat at the retail level for over 40 years. Used to come in front quarters and hindquarters on the hook and dry aging it brought out the flavor held in the marbling. Now beef comes pre-cut, pre-boxed much larger and leaner having little or no flavor. I see chickens with legs and breasts like a turkeys. Quality went down, price went up and we're left to deal with growth hormones.

A word of caution...all of this is true of open air, regenerative cattle farming. However, the vast majority of our meat supply comes from industrial meat, of which NONE of this applies, especially the argument about keeping ecosystems in check. As it stands, we simply do not have the means to provide an adequate amount of the properly raised cattle they describe to satisfy our countries' level of consumption, and therein lies the problem.

After the situation with Oxford awarding their patent to AstraZeneca, anything involving the Gates foundation raises an eyebrow for me, but in the US meat is absurdly consolidated and corporatized as well. The people who raise the animals are forced to sign on as "contractors" with the handful of distributors for their form of meat, and get paid disgracefully little as a portion of the end value in most cases. They also maintain a system of conscious parallelism instead of competing on pricing, if one raises their prices youll usually see the others raise theirs in a few weeks or les.

I know several people who have reduced their autoimmune issues eating mainly meat, but my own experience was the total opposite. I started eating strict vegan and I cured a ton of health problems. I could gradually start exercising gently without ending up in bed for 5 days with flu symptoms. I had a normal period for the first time in my adult life. I started doing Insanity, the hardest home workout program I could find, and I had to stop after a month (looking like a beast by that time) because I found out I was finally pregnant after 4 years of serious reproductive health issues. My husband started eating the same as me, and he lost 15kg in 14 days, built so much muscle, his skin improved, his sleep and anxiety improved. But take note: we NEVER ate meat substitutes, we ate real foods in the most whole state we could manage. I would never touch the Gates frankenmeats. We ate vegetables, salad greens, tons of fruit, whole grains (a literal ton of pasta and rice) potatoes, sweet potatoes, nuts, seeds, legumes, herbs and spices. Real foods that God made, not fake rubbish that evil men made in a factory. If we eat meat we will be very careful to find the best meat we can, from grassfed, freerange, natural sources. A truly healthy vegan diet is cheap and you can grow most of your diet in your back yard. Not complex, chemical laden, synthetic crap that globalist elites want you to eat.

Just because corpos are trying to fuck us all up doesn't mean that the food before is how god intended it. Veggies you grow in your garden come from genetically modified seeds, everything that exists is already genetically modified. Its not a simple topic, that is why you can have people go on meat and almost die, people go vegan and almost die, or the exact opposite. When I worked for Solae or "DuPont" in Memphis, Tennessee we made isolated soy protein ingredient. To make it touchable by humans, we have to dump barrels of high concentration Hydrochloric Acid directly into it to cause the base to come closer to neutral. That stuff is defined by the United States USDA and FDA as an "ingredient" to "100% beef". That's how McDonald's etc can sell billions of burgers. It's literally a % of isolated soy protein ingredient and cow juice, molded and flash frozen. The soy isn't able to be processed by digestive systems. Without diluting almost 100x, it will kill anything that eats it within 24hrs. NoN disclosure agreement means they can sue me for telling you. IDGAF.

Here’s how they reached their conclusions Methods: GBD 2019 estimated attributable mortality, years of life lost (YLLs), years of life lived with disability (YLDs), and disability-adjusted life-years (DALYs) for 87 risk factors and combinations of risk factors, at the global level, regionally, and for 204 countries and territories. GBD uses a hierarchical list of risk factors so that specific risk factors (eg, sodium intake), and related aggregates (eg, diet quality), are both evaluated. This method has six analytical steps. (1) We included 560 risk-outcome pairs that met criteria for convincing or probable evidence on the basis of research studies. 12 risk-outcome pairs included in GBD 2017 no longer met inclusion criteria and 47 risk-outcome pairs for risks already included in GBD 2017 were added based on new evidence. (2) Relative risks were estimated as a function of exposure based on published systematic reviews, 81 systematic reviews done for GBD 2019, and meta-regression. (3) Levels of exposure in each age-sex-location-year included in the study were estimated based on all available data sources using spatiotemporal Gaussian process regression, DisMod-MR 2.1, a Bayesian meta-regression method, or alternative methods. (4) We determined, from published trials or cohort studies, the level of exposure associated with minimum risk, called the theoretical minimum risk exposure level. (5) Attributable deaths, YLLs, YLDs, and DALYs were computed by multiplying population attributable fractions (PAFs) by the relevant outcome quantity for each age-sex-location-year. (6) PAFs and attributable burden for combinations of risk factors were estimated taking into account mediation of different risk factors through other risk factors. Across all six analytical steps, 30 652 distinct data sources were used in the analysis. Uncertainty in each step of the analysis was propagated into the final estimates of attributable burden. Exposure levels for dichotomous, polytomous, and continuous risk factors were summarised with use of the summary exposure value to facilitate comparisons over time, across location, and across risks. Because the entire time series from 1990 to 2019 has been re-estimated with use of consistent data and methods, these results supersede previously published GBD estimates of attributable burden.

I'm a hack so, with arriving mid-summer, only planted a couple casual gardens in cattle tanks. Disregarded the apple trees; did not recognize the bush cherries until loaded with fruit. STUNNED at the taste of fresh sweet corn, tomatoes and melons. Neighbor rancher tills my laughable few acres I can manage by hand in 15 minutes while doing the other alfalfa fields surrounding so plan on raising as much as possible. Add the 500 head+ of Angus beef (100 of which is "held" as reserve/not for market) and feeling more reassured than ever in this eroding world. Corn is great but am NOT a vegetarian! Residents there are now allowed to raise a small number of hens in the backyard of their home. On that note we buy eggs from the farmer and the names of the hens which provided the eggs are written on the label. So different than what you describe. Hell, we also go in on, with 3 others, a whole cow for the deep freezer. So that's 1/4 of all the cuts on a cow each. We don't now the name of the cow if it even had one. I stopped eating meat just over 30 years ago, when I was in college - I just never liked the taste and I'm not against people eating it. I used to love having a black bean burger at a particular chain restaurant. About 4 years ago, I went to this restaurant and found they had replaced the black bean burger with a beyond meat-type version. I tried it and totally hated it, took two bites and didn't finish it. If one doesn't eat meat, why would they want a meat-like burger!?

I think when speaking of widespread agriculture & dietary policy, a focus on veggies is key. Meat is probably most nutrient dense, however thats not all, gotta look at nutrition density per dollar cost. All you need is like 3 veggies to meet meat's nutrition density. Joe gotta chill out, we need more veggies or veggie options. "I dont look like shit" for eating plant based, I have a trained and look waaaaay better than Bill. You gotta be a genius nowadays to eat healthily with just plants.

What they seem to be ignoring is the majority of cattle ranching is corporate cattle ranching which is not sustainable. These cows are pumped full of hormones, chemicals, and pharmaceuticals. The family rancher is going the way of the dodo bird so although there is some access to healthy grass fed beef, this has become the exception and not the rule. I also know that forests, especially in South America, are being cleared to create grass lands for beef production so soon these places that use to get a lot of rain won’t be pulling the same amount of rain without those trees. It looks to be that the hand writing is on the wall and we should at least start lowering our meat consumption. A plant based diet is still the most healthy way to go but not if your diet is full of processed and enriched foods. Non gmo, whole plant foods in their naturally complete form is the most ideal way to go to combat disease. Thank you for reading my comments. Cheers!

I’m a vegetarian but it’s for ME! It makes ME feel good! I ate meat and dairy up until age 23 and after meals would always be left feeling extremely bloated. I’m a registered dietitian so I know how to eat a vegetarian/vegan diet properly without starving my body of the nutrients it needs. I’ve been doing this for 2+ years now and I feel amazing! But my choice wasn’t because “it’s better for the environment” or “to save animals”… I am doing this strictly because I FEEL GOOD. I think that’s an important difference

I think this converstaion was a bit one sided, tbh. They should’ve talked about more about industrial meat and how those animals are treated with vaccines and antibiotics have an impact on our body. I’m not a vegan nor a vegetarian, but household cattle and chicken is just like a different animal then those who are raised in industrial enviroment. Most people don’t have the opportunity to get grassfed meat or game meat. Most people are eating industrial meat wich is i think on par with beyond meat.

I kind of felt attacked watching it because I’m part of the veg/vegan community but my reasoning is so much different than what they were saying… meat isn’t BAD.. the chemicals and all the SHIT they give and feed the animals is what’s bad!! If you can buy even grass fed vacuumed packaged meats right from a butcher, it’s 10x better than industrialized meats!! Shit even just buying organic grass fed at the store is better. Yes it’s “more expensive” but you know what the most expensive part is? The new kidney you’ll need in 30 years PS The beyond meat is trash and tastes like cat food if you were wondering

One thing to keep in mind with all this research is that a lot of it only shows correlations. For example, if there's a correlation between meat eating and poor health, it says nothing about causal effects. Could be that those that can afford meat tend to work in office jobs and have sedentary lifestyles, or it could have something to do with factory farming, or a thousand other factors. It's really important to read the methodologies of studies to truly understand the limits of the research.

Excellent point. They never tell us if the people who don't eat X are smokers, drinkers, take in a ton of sugar, etc. Dietary studies are all about correlation, and in every other branch of science "correlation does not equal causation" is practically a battle cry.

@@lucianaromulus1408 You clearly do not understand basic supply and demand... If factory farming were criminalized, that's billions of dollars of meat that is no longer on store shelves. Where do you think the millions of people who want to buy meat are now going to go to get it? Those local farms. One of two things will happen as demand skyrockets, with farms being unable to meet that demand unless they are factory farming to increase supply. Either you will go to the local farm and there simply won't be any meat for you to buy, because everyone else already bought it... Or the price will match the demand, and skyrocket as well. As Western countries are highly capitalistic, I imagine farmers would look to maximize profits and charge people whatever they can are willing to pay. An 8oz cut of Japanese Kobe beef currently costs around $90. This is a direct result of the limited supply of Kobe cattle. If you ban factory farming, all meat will be much more limited in supply.
