Been riding for 58 years. My grandpa showed me how to put a girth on a saddle when I was 10. He farmed with horses. It’s sad to find out you’ve been doing it wrong your entire life. Thank you for teaching an old dog a new trick.

I appreciate you for your video. Over the years, you see so many new ways to attach your cinch. Could you please show me how you attach the opposite side of the saddle as well? I ask be ause I've heard it's better pressure distribution for the horse if you tie two separate latigos..would you mind showing me both sides of the saddle and steps to tie to saddle?

This longer style is properly called the 'half-breed", done correctly in this video. It is often confused with the "billet", which is shorter and made of heavier leather, it hangs from the saddle dee and buckles direct to the cinch ring without looping back through the dee ring. A third option you may see, is a tie strap, often called a "latigo" , for the type of leather it is made of. Most saddles only have a tie strap on the near side, opting for a half-breed or billet on the off-side.

I use all kinds of different rigging configurations depending on the horse’s conformation, the saddle, the task.... and I have never it done like this! I do have some latigos that are getting worn/weak from doing it the other way...and if I didn’t throw them out- I would be fixing for a wreck just like you said.

I use different length cinches depending on the horse. Usually 26 to 30 inches in length.

If your latigo is extra thick, just do it the old way...new way is better.
