Regardless of how it's supposed to be pronounced most singers either don't know gaidhlig or don't want to confuse their listeners, so Mhairi end up being pronounced Mary

This song reminds me of a very beautiful friend of mine named Mairi from the Isle of Lewis and I play it whenever I want to be reminded of her. And of course her name is pronounced correctly here.

I own that accent, at least I own the Aberdonion one given to me as a child....It has, and still serves me well in all the weird countries I found myself in as an aircraft engineer.

@ithotofthisfirst Poor girl is saying her own name wrong :( - it would be said "Varee" under that spelling. It's nothing to do with personal preference unfortunately, it's about her parents being wrong ;)

Roddy Mc Neil's rendering of it, is the best. The Corries sing it way to slow and take too much care at the pronunciation. This is a folk song, they sing it like a ballad.
