Well lads,
So I've gotten a lot of comments recently about how much bikes cost here in Ireland & how much on average would you need to save before you consider getting into them? It goes without being said that you're better off paying for things in steps. Be smart with your money & don't just blow it all starting up and not having enough to survive on.
Any questions, corrections or comments in general just leave them below! Cheers! :D

Hey, voice-over videos are cool! Very formal, very good. Riding in the rain is good, you can multitask your shower and your ride at the same time. And it's okay that is is a rough figure in this video, I'll be sure to let everybody know in the comments that they can message you about what they are specifically going to get, and you'll be happy to make a judgement on how much it is going to cost. You can leave out the helmet; will only weigh you down on your new, cool, 12 hp Yamaha R125! Don't need to abide the law when you have that bad boy between your legs, the po - po will never be able to catch you! Also, don't need to pay for a bike if it is stolen. (*cough* that was a joke never steal any bike, even a MOPED, still not good, you're a scumbag who deserves to burn in hell if you ever do *cough*) And trust me, bud, it's everybody BUT the Irish who can't pronounce the threes. As for below the neck gear, full leather jumpsuit with the hump at the back. Minimum €1,000; thank me later. Will help you go fastasfucc on that new Yamaha 125 you got yourself. How much is my method all together? No clue! Don't care enough, but hey! Will just ask Luke to make me an estimate for me! Stay safe Luke, have a good one. :)

Thanks - nice vid. There is also an eye test at around 35€. In Poland, there are no L-plates - only the actual license. The cost is 300€ for course + 50€ for the exam, 25€ for updating the license, insurance for motorbike is around 100-150€(I used to pay 25€ for moped when I lived there, back in 2012 )

It's worth mentioning as well that the age of the bike can have an impact on the insurance cost. My insurer was about 400 to 500 cheaper for a bike that was over 10 years old because it fit into the "classic" class. Definitely go for an older second hand bike rather than a brand new one when you start out. Also, If you're buying a bike from a dealer who sells gear, see if they'll give you a discount if you buy everything from them. No harm in asking! Great video 👍
@LuckyLukeRides

Good shout Rebel County Rider! My Super Four started at €880, went down to €610 and then the next year a lad at Carole Nash said it was a "classic" class too so it went down to €290! Insurance is gone back up to €920 now on the MT-07 but I bought it brand new in June. Discounts from a dealer are also not unheard of, another good point for people lurking in the comment section!

That is a lot of hoops to jump through. I paid $20 for the MSF BRC (Basic Rider course) in Illinois. Each state is different, take it at a HD dealership and you can pay $350+ but they will put that towards a purchase of a bike. After the BRC it was $4 to have the "M" put on my license. Helmet $150 (DOT and SNELL approved), Jackets 150, 130, and 190 (two mesh and 1 zip hoodie with kevlar) , riding jeans $180ish, Icon boots $200, cold weather gloves and summer gloves total $100, insurance was $28/month, and bike $6000 for new Versys. The Versys went down on gravel and was totaled and the insurance company sent me a check for $5700. Replacement bike, 2005 Rocket 3, $4750. Not cheap anywhere you go. There are people here in the states whose ego's only allow them to buy big HD's as first bikes so they could be spending $10k-$30k depending on how new they want it.
@LuckyLukeRides
@LuckyLukeRides 5 жыл бұрын
That's quite the history Jay! I think the initial start up cost can be estimated but the amount you spend after you've got the bike never stops adding up! New gear, new mods, crash repairs, fuel, replacement parts, services, the list goes on and on. There's a lot of big ego lads here too that want to have the biggest, fastest bike and the irony is 99% of these people are terrible riders...

Pricing is always different for many things. Theory test can be avoided (for certain groups, and there are some specifics as to when you sat a theory test). But, in general, theory test, learner permit, IBT - they are fairly set prices. I think the average IBT is about 500. That's what I paid for mine, but you can get deals (two people learning together) and get it for 400. Helmet, gear, bike, insurance all vary greatly, and can range from minimal to massive. It all depends on how much you have, what you want, how much you have to spend, etc. And then, some people have winter gear and summer gear. Not that either is more or less expensive, just different ventilation and rain proofing. :-) Good video all the same, and I can say that my initial costs were more expensive, because I had the money, bought a new bike, and started much later in life. :-) All depends on the person.
@LuckyLukeRides
@LuckyLukeRides 5 жыл бұрын
Didn't realise that the theory test can be avoided, in what sort of cases is that allowed? The IBT is around 400-600 alright although I've heard some lads charging more but if that's the case they should be shot. Most of the figures are subjective alright but I'm happy enough and confident enough that it's a decent ball park figure that can help a few lads out. New bikes are always saucy to insure, I know that now with the MT-07. Hoping it'll come down when I get to renew in June! :) You heading to the RDS at any stage for the show this weekend?

Prices are mad. I'm moving to Dublin to be with my family next year ( I'm from the states) and it just seems so different from how we ride here. Gotta sell my 1980 hondamatic 400 for a 125 with an a1 permit. Its just the prices are mad. €3000 for a brand new ninja 125 if I'm lucky. Edit: I have recently found out my riding gear is not legal in Dublin. In the states we could wear a German style half helmet and a leather vest and call it a day lol.
@LuckyLukeRides
@LuckyLukeRides 5 жыл бұрын
Prices are indeed mad over here man. You'll learn that about Ireland very quickly. Insurance is a scam and a legal requirement. Also, you'll probably have to go through our whole licence system as the U.S. licence can not be swapped directly for an Irish one. That in itself is costly, I've got a video about it on my channel from a while back. The reason 125cc's and lower cc bikes are so expensive is because so many younger riders are limited to what they can ride so people can get away with charging crazy money for 'A1' or 'A2' legal bikes. As for you gear I wouldn't worry about that at all man. I've seen hundreds of people with the open face helmets with sunglasses or bandanas etc. I'm pretty sure you'll get away with wearing it. As for your leather vest, that is fine. The only thing that is an actual legal requirement is a helmet so as long as you're wearing that it doesn't matter what actual clothes you have on.

You could easily get on the road for much less. 1st year buy a 50cc scooter, you could easily pick up a good one for 1k. Cheaper insurance, tax and fuel cost. Easy to repair and service yourself. As regarding safety always buy boots, trousers, jacket and a helmet. As long as they have the CE mark they will be fine for normal driving conditions. It would be well achievable with 3k. The most expensive part is getting to a full licence.

The IBT stuff is honestly shocking to me. I don't know how there wasn't uproar over it when it was brought in, as it's simply another ridiculous cost just to get on the road. If the state were so worried about road fatalities it should be heavily subsidized. No similar standard exists for cars, so it all but nudges people into driving a car instead as it will cost you far less in the long run.

I think Liberty are the only crowd to do online quotes. No idea really what you could end up paying. I'm assuming with your age and the experience that it shouldn't be too bad but you'd never know with the insurance crowds. Most 1st quotes I've heard are between €500 - 1000.

Damn bro this was really helpful! How much does it cost to run a well maintained 600cc bike (service and fuel)? Not too sure if you know anything but I can't really wear a helmet on top of my turban so... Do they allow no helmets for Sikhs? Cheers mate!

@LuckyLukeRides
@LuckyLukeRides 5 жыл бұрын
Hey man, servicing/fuel all depends on what bike you're getting & how you ride it! If you're only going around a city or town you won't be spending much on fuel but if you're going out for spins on country roads you'll be using more. Services can be cheaper if you do them yourself. The basic things are just an oil and filter change, cleaning/lubricating your chain and also just checking your fluid levels like brakes and radiator fluid. As for helmets for Sikhs, I wouldn't know man. However here in Ireland you are required by law to wear a helmet while on a motorbike, without one you'll be stopped and possibly fined/have your bike taken off you. Hope this helps! 👍

Depends where your living and what sort of weather it has. I tried living with a bike only for a year (a 1990 Honda 100 2 stroke bought new) By the end of it I was worn out and weary because of the Irish weather so was very glad to get back into a car after the year was up.

Does the car liscense include an a1 bike category and what gear is definitely necessary besides the helmet
@LuckyLukeRides
@LuckyLukeRides 4 жыл бұрын
Nah pal, the car & bike licences are completely different now. As I said, a helmet is the only legal requirement but to be honest, everything is a necessity. If you come off the bike with no gear it's no fun. Apparently as soon as your skin makes contact with the road it's an instant 2nd degree burn and it gets worse from there as you slide etc. Gloves are vital as your normal reaction when falling is to stop yourself with your hands. A jacket and pants are essential as if you come off and are sliding for a while you'll want something that'll hold up. Boots are very important for the same reasons as above. Don't get me wrong, some times if I'm popping to the shop I'll throw on regular jeans but I'll always wear my gloves, boots, jacket and helmet.

In all seriousness though, there are a couple of reasons as to why it's so expensive. One being that Ireland has a massive claim culture. In small little accidents people claim for thousands upon thousands worth of damages which in turn drives everyone's premium up. Same goes for uninsured drivers crashing into insured drivers. There's a lot of problems and I don't see a fix any time soon.

Brilliant video. Just what I was looking for. One question: About how much time does it take for all that paperwork and licensing to get you on the road (learner)? And how much time does the learner's course take?
@LuckyLukeRides
@LuckyLukeRides 4 жыл бұрын
Hi Brian, glad you found the video helpful! As for time, it's a couple of weeks maybe 3-4 weeks before you get on the road. That's between passing your theory test and actually applying for a learner permit through the NDLS. The I.B.T. then varies from instructor to instructor. Most will try do 3 days of a couple hours riding. I did mine across 3 days. First was a class room type situation about rules of the road and about bikes, the parts and general info. Next couple of hours was just walking with the bike, taking it off the stand then getting on the bike and doing some slow car park drills. My next day was actually on the road and the instructor was talking to me via a helmet communication system. He would lead and I would follow and then I would lead and he would follow then stop for some feedback etc. The last day then was just more road riding, junctions, roundabouts, emergency braking, overtaking etc. They're a very well laid out course to be fair. Depending on where your based you should look up the best instructor in your area or ask local bikers who they did theirs with! Sorry for the essay! Hope it answers any questions! :)

Hi, Just wondering what is your experience driving during winter and with heavy winds. I travel a lot and moving from a car to a motorbike is difficult decision weather-wise. Is travel possible if you go slow and are really careful or you recommend not driving at all due to black ice?? Thanks in advance!!
@LuckyLukeRides
@LuckyLukeRides 4 жыл бұрын
Hey man, Winter can be quite nerve wrecking. Especially early mornings with ice. If you HAVE to ride in winter, you just need to be really really REALLY slow & careful. I would try avoid it if possible. Wind isn't the worst issue unless it's very windy and you're literally getting blown all over the road. Riding in the wind I can get over, but riding in the ice is just asking for trouble to be honest man.
@Lar308
@Lar308 Жыл бұрын
Once you stay on the main roads that have been ice treated you should be fine but avoid country lanes as these usually are covered in ice. Wind can be an issue on lighter bikes and scooters especially if they have screens but on heavier bikes not such a problem.
