As a therapist, no matter how many lived experiences I hear from my clients, I will sit in awe.. Awe of the strength, resilience and grit people have to survive….and yet, they cannot see it, nor value themselves in anyway! Grey, thank you for sharing, it’s always a privilege to hear another persons story. You have value, you have meaning, and you are more than the things that you have done and more than what has been done to you! We are rooting for you Grey ❤

Exactly. Too many content producers whether it be KZfaq or the huge broadcast networks will edit out dead air. But that silence is so powerful and emotional. It showed us so much about him yet no words were spoken.

I also have PTSD from violence (non-veteran), and a big part of that silence is your brain dissociating due to talking about the traumas. Or it can be flashes of the horrific memories going thru your mind. It's kind of like you go into a fog and space out for a bit. It's a coping mechanism the brain uses when dealing with trauma. PTSD can also affect your speech when talking about the traumas (like trouble forming words, getting them out, trouble with pronunciation, I would compare it to the dentist injecting your entire mouth with novacaine for however long the episode lasts. PTSD is a weird monster. I hope this man can get some much needed trauma focused help, and improve his quality of life. Breaks my heart seeing what he's dealing with mentally right now.

Grey sees no value in himself, but I see a man that even with all the pain weighing down on him, still manages to be a captivating speaker. I can totally see him getting better and being a motivational speaker for other veterans down on their luck. Mark, please find help for Grey. I don't really get how so many people think "motivational speaker" is a good option for people who are in a bad place. Sure it might help to talk about what you've been through (with others who can relate and in a safe place), but most of all guys like these need therapy, rest, stability, loving people around them, a job when they're ready for it. I don't think they need to turn their trauma into a public performance.

I agree with you, @gsteele89. This footage is... captivating in so many ways. Probably (one of) the best Mark has posted. My heart goes out to Grey. I wish I could take away his pain, but I can't. That's not for me. I hope he can find absolution somewhere down the line. The suffering he is going through isn't because of his own doing. He didn't send US troops either to Iraq or Afghanistan. Those who did don't suffer. Neither did their sons get sent off. Grunts like Grey has to pay the cost. The cost of war. Words are so futile...

As a 26-year veteran, that did NOT experience combat, this interview should be required viewing for all Americans. Our current system is designed to create a poor, impoverished, poorly educated, underserved population with limited or no access to healthcare or stable housing. These circumstances exist, in part, to create a lucrative, backdoor, recruitment system for this all-volunteer military.

don't make this an anti-capitalist screed. this is the government failing to think about the consequences of short term soldiers who have been broken down, been through hell, and have no effective offboarding at all when they leave the service. unfortunately many like this guy had a shit life before he joined, felt what it was like to be cared about and loved, then had to go back to before with lots of bad memories.

I wish he knew before he had went.. when I was young I wanted to be a soldier. But as I got older, I did my own research and the research I did was VERY extensive. I was always into “Conspiracy Theories” and how almost all of them came to be true. So when I learned more about the wars and learned how meaningless it is to fight in them coupled with seeing REAL videos of the carnage of war.. I never, for any other day, wanted to ever join again. The government and the powers above the government who control the show, TRULY, don’t give a rats ass about any of us. They don’t.. and when more of us figure this out, more of us will begin to make better decisions for our lives and our futures.

Hey Grey, the largest lesson I have learned in my recovery was to stop blaming and beating myself up!!! Whether or not it's well deserved the guilt is irrelevant. @@ump1nen I hear and feel you! Believe me I have been there, have you tried harm reduction? I.e. Subs/methadone, or are you battling a different substance? I also learned I wasn't able to do it myself nor could I have without coming clean to every one i knew at the time. Are you Grey from the interview or just someone in the battle? I don't know your story and I don't want to pretend I do. I'm just speaking from what I think you might be experiencing. Think of it as trying to win a game, you can't score if you don't take the shot! You have to let the guilt go just like you have to let the drugs go as well, their the cause and effect there for you have to and maybe asking for professional help is the way to go? There is no shame in a cancer patient taking meds to get better, so there's no shame for you either!!! Sorry so long good luck, please let me know if you can.

This is very true.. most peoples traumas and hardships and deep holes/pits that they fall into in life don’t begin to get better until a major weight is lifted off one’s chest. Whether it be holding guilt, can’t forgive yourself or others, blaming yourself or others, etc. Once you let that go, and you can, let go of that traumatic event or period of your life, only then can you start a fresh new chapter in your life. Turn over a new leaf as they say. Because when you hold these things inside, for what ever time period it may be, you are literally living in the past for how ever long it is you are going through that cycle. You can never move forward, you will always be stuck and it will make you sick, it will cause premature aging, destroy relationships, put you on drugs, and much more. We need to face our issues HEAD ON, forgive the situation, the person or people, ourselves, and only then can we actually start to live again. Only then can you start to live in the current times and go forward again. This is very sad and happens to many folks. Many people also take a long time to find these answers or sometimes NEVER find these answers or ways out of what they are going through. It is truly a sad thing. I wish everyone going through this kind of stuff the very best and I wish that they stay strong and find the answers. There are answers for everything in this life, you just can never give up. Keep looking for the remedies to these traumas. You will definitely find the answers.

"I don't know if I'm capable of doing something different." "I did everything I could to not be happy." Those words tell me this is a man is so badly broken, because he *cares.* He went back to get his GED. There are millions of men like him with no one telling him as a child that he was loved...that he mattered. Yet he decided...on his own...to get his GED. When he speaks, every word is about how badly he feels. How much he questions his every thought and every feeling, as if to say, "Am I allowed to have them? Say them? Talk about them? Did I do enough to deserve this moment to share them?" I have never heard anyone be so honest, let alone a marine. I will never forget you Grey. Not ever.

My late dad was a gunny sgt. on a B-17 during WWII. He only told me one story about his experiences in the Pacific, which involved someone's accumulated beer rations being stored in the bombay and then dropped over Japan. He wasn't some flyboy who never saw who & what was being bombed. He was probably an atomic vet, but he never inquired about it because of the bureaucracy of the VA. That and the Great Depression made a huge imprint on his mind, spirit and soul. Take care, Grey. I'm so glad you feel that you can tell your story.

I see a lot of this in my practice. The Department of Veterans Affairs does not do enough. They promise lifetime care to Veterans, however, that care is lacking and full of gaps. Veterans walk in needed intense therapy and they are given medication and sent on their way. Medication may help, but therapy must be a huge part of the equation. I thank all of our Veterans for their sacrifices and services. They deserve more!

That marine recruiter deserves commendation. The fact that he financed this young man's lodging for two weeks before boot camp and attended his graduation, representing his family, speaks volumes about his character. There are individuals who can endure the 'cost of war' without psychological scars. However, this does not apply to those like Grey, who will carry these battle scars for the rest of their lives. Per Wikipedia: The Second Battle of Fallujah The Second Battle of Fallujah, initially codenamed Operation Phantom Fury, Operation al-Fajr (Arabic: الفجر, lit. 'The Dawn') was an American-led offensive of the Iraq War that lasted roughly six weeks, starting 7 November 2004. Marking the highest point of the conflict against the Iraqi insurgency, it was a joint military effort carried out by the United States, the Iraqi Interim Government, and the United Kingdom. Within the city of Fallujah, the coalition was led by the U.S. Marine Corps and U.S. Army, the battle was later described as "some of the heaviest urban combat Marines have been involved in since Huế City in Vietnam in 1968" and as the toughest battle the U.S. military has been in since the end of the Vietnam War. It was the single bloodiest and fiercest battle of the entire conflict, including for American troops. Operation Phantom Fury was the second major coalition effort in Fallujah. Earlier, in April 2004, coalition forces fought the First Battle of Fallujah in an attempt to capture or kill insurgent elements who were considered responsible for the 2004 Fallujah ambush, which resulted in the deaths of four private military contractors of Blackwater. When the coalition fought their way into the centre of the city, the Iraqi Interim Government requested that the city's control be transferred over to an Iraqi-run local security force, which then began stockpiling weapons and building complex defences across the city through mid-2004. The battle is notable for being the first major engagement of the Iraq War that was fought solely against insurgents as opposed to the government military forces of the former Ba'athist Iraq. Source Wikipedia. Per Wikipedia: The Haditha Massacre The Haditha massacre (also called the Haditha killings or the Haditha incident) was a series of killings on November 19, 2005, in which a group of United States Marines killed 24 unarmed Iraqi civilians. The killings occurred in the city of Haditha in Iraq's western province of Al Anbar. Among the dead were men, women, elderly people and children as young as 1, who were shot multiple times at close range while unarmed. The ensuing massacre took place after an improvised explosive device exploded near a convoy, killing a lance corporal and severely injuring two other marines. The immediate reaction was to seize 5 men in a nearby taxi and execute them on the street. An initial Marine Corps communique reported that 15 civilians were killed by the bomb's blast and eight insurgents were subsequently killed when the Marines returned fire against those attacking the convoy. However, other evidence uncovered by the media contradicted the Marines' account. A Time magazine reporter's questions prompted the United States military to open an investigation into the incident. The investigation found evidence that "supports accusations that U.S. Marines deliberately shot civilians", according to an anonymous Pentagon official. Three officers were officially reprimanded for failing to properly initially report and investigate the killings. On December 21, 2006, eight Marines from 3rd Battalion, 1st Marines were charged in connection with the incident. By June 17, 2008, six defendants had their cases dropped and a seventh was found not guilty. The exception was former Staff Sergeant, now-Private Frank Wuterich. On October 3, 2007, the Article 32 hearing investigating officer recommended that charges of murder be dropped and Wuterich be tried for negligent homicide in the deaths of two women and five children. Further charges of assault and manslaughter were ultimately dropped; Wuterich was convicted of a single count of negligent dereliction of duty on January 24, 2012. Wuterich received a rank reduction and pay cut but avoided jail time. Iraqis expressed disbelief and voiced outrage after the six-year U.S. military prosecution ended with none of the Marines sentenced to incarceration. A lawyer for the victims stated "this is an assault on humanity" before adding that he, as well as the Government of Iraq, might bring the case to international courts. Source Wikipedia

My daughters dad was a destroyed soldier too. Nightmares he could never get away from... shit happens over there that changes them scarred from in the early 90s things was different during war He would never talk about what happened he would lock it all in He would have these mental breakdowns and get in a drunken fight with him self Literally fight physical harm to him self .. He'd get to the VA and he could lie and pull a fast one on them. Never committed!! One of the last drunk times w him driving him back from the VA. Was he was scared of war crimes. Idk if it was his delusional thoughts or if he was involved with war crimes... But he's been gone 2yrs now. I'm raising our 10 yr old daughter who remembers Nothing of him.. he was a shell of a man I never really knew . I loved the love we shared for the time that we did.. when I knew he couldn't or wouldn't get help.. I couldn't remain safe with him Rip jose
