Controversies in Church History

Controversies in Church History

3 жыл бұрын

In 1545, the Catholic hierarchy met in the imperial city of Trent to decide how to respond to the Protestant Reformation. Over the course of eighteen years, the council responded to Protestant criticisms by reaffirming key doctrines but also took steps to reform abuses which contributed to the Protestant schism. Trent would reshape and revitalize the Catholic Church in Europe and set the stage as Catholicism became a global faith in the early modern era. In this lecture, we examine the impact of the council and why its achievements are still important (and controversial!) in the life of the Church today.

One of the finest catechisms ever written is the Catechism of the Council of Trent. An excellent source to help one learn the Catholic Faith.

Exactly. It is great to demonstrate how much Roman doctrine has changed and how much the modern Roman doctrine has added Protestant concepts.

Looks like conciliarism still persists today

Luther had no intention to split the Church. He wanted only to reform the church and expunge the corruption in it. It was Rome who refused to listen, even to the points they knew needed change. Rome’s response was only “repent or die”. Rome brought the pain upon Europe over this, despite making many of the changes that were suggested.

The German Princes didn’t want to meet outside the Holy Roman Empire’s territory because of Rome’s policy or burning heretics, like they saw Lutherans, at the stake. You cannot leave that part out. Ask Hus…
