The Coverups (Green Day) - Bastards of Young (The Replacements cover) - Albany, Live, 1-15-18, 1st row, Ivy Room. Secret Show! Mike Dirnt: We do play requests, but it has to be a song we've already played :P
Other Tidbits:
Billie Joe: I’ve done some time down here in Albany… :P
The Ivy Room is a bar and music venue which has a capacity of only 196 people. There were about 100 friends and family in attendance and essentially a private show, but was also open to fans who were able to figure out the clues the band left on their social media pages. Admission was only $10, and with it, we also got a raffle ticket. Many joke prizes were raffled off, including such items as a sex doll, personal humidifier, drink coupons and a penis enlarging pump, lol. The grand prize was a very nice Les Paul guitar.
The Coverups, Billie Joe, Mike Dirnt, Jason White, Bill Schneider, Lee Bothwick and Chris Dugan, all hung out after the show, talking with the fans and taking pictures.
For 'American Girl', Jason Beebout of Samiam, a punk band from Berkeley, California, sang the lead vocals while fans in the 1st row held up the lyrics sheet for him.
Billie Joe (before ‘I Fought the Law’): The (sex doll) looks just like him! lol
Jason White: I think this bar band thing could work out for us... :P
Many of the fans recognized each other from previous Green Day concerts. Some even recognized each other from the concert at 924 Gilman the previous night! However, because the Ivy Room could only allow in fans 21 years old and over, some fans could not make it.
Billie Joe (after 'Surrender'): Yes... We are all right... It's going to be all right... with all the fu*ked up sh*t going on right now... it's going to be all right. It's like when you're having a night terror, but it's happening 24 hours a day... :P

The Replacements are the most underrated punk/modern-rock band of all time

@@el_spicerbeasto i think as we're tuned into punk and/or alternative it's easy to feel like they're huge, but outside of this kind of music i think plenty of people don't know them. If we surveyed players of soul, pop, jazz, metal, or hip-hop we'd find they know bands that truly broke like REM but not the Mats, whose notoriety is primarily within specific circles. A lot of folks also wouldn't know Husker or even Mudhoney. It seems like the Replacements were conflicted about how mainstream they wanted to be, and strived hard for success while also constantly self-sabotaging until like 87... If not for that, they would be not only known to normie rock fans, but probably a household name in general. I think Goo Goo Dolls, with such massive inspiration from the Mats, demonstrated what heights could've been reached had Paul cracked the whip just like 4 years earlier.

@@sirfizz6518 the replacements second manager summed it up best. It was basically along the lines of “you guys all strive for success, want to make it in the big leagues, but you just end up shooting yourself in the foot. Once your foot heals, you shoot the other one. Almost as if your scared of being able to walk, let alone run.”

It took me a sec to notice Mike had a 6-string lol. Gotta love their versatility. Clearly they took inspiration from the Mats in a number of ways, seemingly learning from Paul's mistakes and his shrewdness alike. They had the sense to ride the wave all the way to the top while never really compromising themselves. They've continued doing stuff like this, and i think anyone who's looked closely would agree they've maintained massive scene cred while becoming some of the best musicians connected with punk, and reaching the greatest heights of global renown to invite everyday music fans down the rabbit hole and into the fold. I'm seeing much of how world-class musicians in any given genre are often largely there because of a deep respect for their musical forebears. Great notes to take as a young musician. Thanks for recording and sharing.

Most would say GD are way better than The Mats. Just are. Well...Mike did a decent job and the band did decent with this song but they just aren't Bob, Paul, Chris, and Tommy making the song. They do it justice...but it leaves something...a Bob Stinson thing (Like when Slim played it...Sorry Slim) out. GD do not remember me in Benicia... I am certain of that. I remember them leaving the youth center and each holding my son who was a few months old...my wife and I traded going up to see them play every few songs. Big GD fan...but this song screams for Bob.

This cover sucks, the drummer doesn't even hit the snare enough time. Chris mars' drums sound like machine gun gun fire when he does it.

I think the cover is pretty decent actually, but would have been better with Tre on the drums.
