While it had a checkered past the Brickyard 400 has had races that many races that draw people’s attention. Outside of the 2008 tire debacle the one that most look back on, especially newer fans, is the 2017 Brickyard 400. With nobody being safe and everything from crashes to weather to even the darkness threatening this race it is pretty clear why many remember it. Add to this the hard racing and you have an event that can be a shining example of why fans would love it in NASCAR. This is the craziest Brickyard 400 in NASCAR history.

Imagine if Jimmie made the pass while going for the win while the car was blowing up. That would've been one of the most daring and impressive passes we've ever seen in recent NASCAR history. Plus, the fact this race went past 8 PM CST, if I'm correct, that would've been the longest Brickyard 400 yet.

You should do review of 2004 Brickyard 400… Lots of passes throughout the field, many racing incidents and Jeff Gordon dominated & won the race with a damaged fender. Also, this was the first race to introduce the GWC restart in the Cup Series.

I remember this race! The fact Jimmie Johnson was able to keep racing for the lead while appearing to be blowing up has got to be one of the wildest things ever seen in NASCAR. Just imagine if he was somehow able to pull that off.

The Top Finishers from the 2017 Brickyard 400 were Kasey Kahne in 1st, Ryan Newman in 3rd, Matt DiBenedetto in 8th, Chris Buescher in 9th, A.J. Allmendinger in 10th, Danica Patrick in 11th, Cole Whitt in 12th, and Timmy Hill in 14th. That was indeed a crazy wild race.

I had been a Kahne fan since 04. Was so thrilled when he got this win. The type of career Larson is having with HMS in the 5 is what I had hoped for Kahne. Disappointed it didn't turn out that way, but he still accomplished more than many other drivers and held his own with some legends.

I remember I was at a campout this weekend and found out about Kahne's win over instagram, and ended up going back to rewatch every bit of footage I could find that night. It had been so long since Kahne had won, i thought it may never happen again, and I hated that i missed it live, but i was so happy that he was able to get one more for himself. Hell, he was even able to reclaim the Brickyard victory that slipped through his fingers back in 2005, which made it even more special! He'll always be my first favorite driver, so this race will always hold a place in my heart

I agree. Nothing really stood out to me in the early 2010's other than Menard and Gordan's victories. But the later years were most definitely better: 2016 had the battle of the Gibbs cars, 2017 already explained here and was something that never got boring, 2018 had strategy and very exciting final laps, 2019 had the chaos in turn 2 and the fighters for the final playoff spots, and 2020 had wild restarts, drama with tires (not as bad as 2008), and the potential of Matt Kenseth pulling one more possible win. So yeah, definitely some of the best years even if the stands didn't show it.

When I saw this Brickyard 400 I saw top 6 usual suspects except Kasey Kahne through out the 2017 year was not doing well, and struggling and then wins the biggest race of his career and gets in the playoffs, and winning the last race for the 5 until 2021. But I think about some these other finishers Daniel Suarez 7th not a great big surprise but I say it was but Matt DiBennendetto 8th he got top 10's in both the Daytona 500 and Brickyard 400 for 2017, as well as then teammates at JTG Daughtry Chris Buescher, and AJ Allmendinger, and Danica Patrick in 11th, but more shocking Cole Whitt and Timmy Hill in 12th and 14th if I am not mistaken that was their best career finishes or equaled it if I am not mistaken. But it was Timmy Hill's first lead lap Cup Series finish since Kansas of 2012. And the first for the 66 car since 2008 at Homestead-Miami. But no question this Brickyard 400 was crazy. Cautions everywhere, some unlikely strong finishers. given where a lot of them were in points for 2017.

Kasey Kahne had 3 Brickyard 400 races slip through his fingers. You can argue that this win was lucky, but considering how bad his luck was 60 percent of the time he was on the track, I think a lucky break was warranted. I hated that it came at the expense of Kyle Busch’s bid for 3 in a row but it was a nice trade off anyway. And I would argue that Kahne had a great car in practice that weekend but he had a terrible qualifying effort, which probably would have given him a better chance to fight for the win. But Kahne winning made up for that disappointing wreck with Truex and Busch

The way NASCAR messed with the FWC rule.... the rule as it was was bad enough, but for the wreck to happen before Kahne crossed the overtime line, and for NASCAR not to throw the caution until after Kahne crossed the overtime line.... I understand that darkness was approaching, but still....
