In the hallowed landscape of Normandy, France, the Battle of Cherbourg unfolded as a symphony of thundering naval and ground artillery pummeled the German port defenses.
The streets echoed with the rhythmic cadence of gunfire as American GIs closed in on the strategic port city. Pinned beneath the gaze of German pillboxes and unforgiving 88-millimeter Flak guns, the Allies faced German audacity and stiff resistance.
Amidst the chaos, Corporal John D. Kelly braved a hail of machine gun fire, navigating through enemy defenses with a pole and TNT charges to destroy a pillbox and save his buddies.
Lieutenant Carlos C. Ogden, a fearless leader from Fairmount, Illinois, confronted a lethal artillery barrage in another sector. Despite his grievous injuries and a bullet grazing his helmet, Ogden wielded his M1 Garand grenade launcher and advanced towards an 88-millimeter Flak gun already damaged by one of his grenades. He aimed to silence it for good.
Such was the spirit of the fighting men led by Lightning Joe Collins, one of the youngest commanders in US military history tasked with capturing the most crucial port the allied troops required for the liberation of France.

Most soldiers who refuse to speak about their experiences are often (sometimes incorrectly) afraid or others finding out about the horrible things they did. War is horrible, many soldiers feel like their actions were inexcusable. But often it's the exact opposite. They were heroic actions. Some soldiers have trouble calling themselves heroes. But their guilt deprives future generations of their stories...

My grandfather Frank Cormeir was on the USS Heavy Cruiser Tuscaloosa, 1937-1945, was a crane operator as a duty station, a gunners mate in his battle station in the #2 turret firing an 8 inch rifle he helped his crew bombard Utah Beach and Cherbourg as well, hitting troop concentrations and artillery positions. When the fighting moved inland, they were sent to Iwo Jima, but thats a different battle

My Pop was there on the hill , wounded the first morning after the town of Mortain fell the previous evening. They were surrounded and cut off for 4 days under attack by the Second SS Panzer division. They were offered terms of. The American officer told them to “F” off . Pop said if he had only told them “Nuts”we would have been famous . As it went they became known as Roosevelts SS. The division took over 18,000 casualties and my Pop made it from the beginning (D+6?) to the last month. Silver Star with Oak Leaf Cluster , Purple Heart, CIB,Bronze Star , and Presidential Unit Citation for Mortain. There’s so many incredible battles untold. The Battle of Thirimont was another .

It makes sense to show pictures of Lightning Joe with four stars towards the end of this piece. However, the early pictures should be of him with just two or three stars, not four. And, this piece seems to be mostly about Lightning Joe and thus I submit the title should be changed to reflect that.

Correcto mundo. It would have had to be the bridge which, if directly hit, would most likely kill most of the ranking officers, depending upon where on the bridge it was hit.

The germans only surrendered because they were out of ammo Before that the made such a mess of the docks because they blew them that it couldn't be used the restof the war. There's another video on it which tells the story. If people can find it watch it. Neither story takes away the bravery of the soldiers. God bless them all

Came here to say that. The story of Cherbourg isn't complete without two missing pieces. The first is the destruction of the Mulberry harbors by a gale in late June, which virtually halted replenishment of ammunition, fuel and equipment, without which the Allied advance would grind to a halt. The second is that, between the well-planned and executed German defense and the demolition and mining of the harbor, it was mid-August before the port saw even limited use.

Interesting item, but what is annoying in Dark whatevers is that after all those years you still don't know how to properly pronounce the ie and ei in German names. Heinkel tortured into Hinkel, von Schlieben into von Schleiben and what not more, I lost track. Please do research of how to pronounce foreign names before you record the texts, it will give a quantum quality boost.

Not only is your point well taken, but in many of these military videos, the wrong syllables are stressed in many words, especially names of ships, towns, etc. In one video, in the name of the Japanese battleship Yamato, the first syllable is stressed by the narrator, when it should be the second.
