Street Fighter Alpha has its own weird development history, which isn't reflected in the Wikipedia article. Alpha started development as a CPS1 title; its reason for existing was quite literally to use up some of Capcom's excess stock of CPS1 hardware. A SNES port was also planned from the start. In an interview posted at Capcom's website, Takayuki Nakayama said the project was referred to as "Street Fighter Classic" when he was tapped to join as designer.

That name, "Street Fighter Classic", makes me think that the original idea may have been to create a reimagining of the original Street Fighter. Which would be a perfect explanation for why the final product ended up being a midquel.

I really love this version of Street Fighter Alpha. It's incredible they managed to capture the look and feel of the CPS2 arcade game on the little 8Bit system. You can perform special moves and combos like a pro. The only other handheld fighting games on the Gameboy that feel as good are the Nettou series - King of Fighters, Fatal Fury and World Heroes. All using the same engine it seems. There's also the excellent Sunsoft Robot fighter Power Quest, which has a solid combo system as well.

Crawfish actually did pretty well with this, but more impressively was their port of sfa3. Granted some stages and sound and music were removed but they actually had 3 extra characters from the dc and psx version and managed to leave some of the gameplay modes intact. I owned the game and was incredibly impressed with it given how limited the gba was.

I agree I have played both and still actually have the GBC game and it is far more playable. I found the Master System version borderline unplayable and pulling off precise moves far harder due to how sluggish the game was and it's worse when using the sponge of a dpad on the official controller. I always found the games that started coming out on the GBC to be remarkable at the time because there were loads that really pushed what the hardware should have be capable of but because of the success of Pokémon anything and everything was coming out for it.
@dallas2314
@dallas2314 4 жыл бұрын
I still can't believe that Top Hat Gaming Man defended the SMS port and in some ways preferred it over this GBC port of Alpha. The Master System port is complete trash and is a poor representation of the SMS's capabilities. Sega's 8-Bit hardware can and has already done the fighting game genre justice. Take a look at Fatal Fury Special on the Game Gear. The Game Gear's core hardware is identical to the SMS with the only real differences being a lower resolution screen, stereo PSG instead of mono PSG, a higher color palette, and a start button that functions differently than the pause button on the SMS (in other words, games on the GG are SMS quality, but at a lower resolution and sometimes take advantage of the extra colors and stereo sound.) Fatal Fury Special GG has fantastic music (much better than those weird half complete songs in SF2 on SMS), very impressive graphics that look just like the arcade, but scaled down to a smaller screen, excellent controls for a two-button fighter (combos are limited, but the controls are very responsive), and while the game only has 9 out of 16 characters from the Neo Geo, there's still a lot of content for an 8-Bit fighting game. It's basically Fatal Fury Special Mini whereas SF2 on SMS feels like a bootleg. Fatal Fury Special on the Game Gear supports the link cable and since I have that and two working Game Gears, I plan on buying two copies of FFS soon. I wish Street Fighter 2 had been ported to the SMS and GG back in the day by Capcom themselves. We could've had a truly amazing portable fighting game experience and a quality 8-Bit home conversion. Street Fighter 2 is my favorite fighting game and the SMS is my favorite home console and the Game Gear is my favorite handheld so this would've been a dream come true for me.

Personally, I always loved the visuals in SFA on the GBC :) The framerate was smooth, the animations were incredibly fluid for a handheld fighting game, and the strange mannequin-esque characters were reminiscent of the Neo Geo Pocket :D Fast, fluid, all the characters, all the special moves, near flawlessly responsive controls -- a genuinely impressive port that was mightily fun to play :)

The Alpha port on the Game Boy Color was very impressive. My only gripe about it was the how loud and sudden the title theme played after start-up. Only possible on the Game Boy Color too, the game needed the extra processing power the GBC had over the black and white Game Boy (which is why the port of Street Fighter II ran so slowly).

Funny how back in the mid 90s when everyone was going crazy over "3D" graphics, and Sony had its "no 2D" dogma in play, Capcom was still busy doing Capcom, and those games still hold up extremely well in aesthetics, while almost none of the polygon based games look remotely good today. I think the Alpha games still look better than something like Street Fighter V too.

I played the hell out of SF Alpha 2 on SNES, yes it was a bit slow and loading times was a bit weird in SNES, but the game was surprisingly good, probably the best looking SF game in SNES, having all the mechanics, supers, alpha counters and even cinematics like intros, rivals intros, and artwork......that was mind blowing to me, only weird was why they didn't better port SF Alpha 1, with less characters and mechanics they could have done a more effective work, still that port is very underrated if you ask me.
