In this lecture, Dr Ross Wilson (University of Cambridge) explores the critical reception of Christina Rossetti, both in her own lifetime and in the 20th and 21st centuries. In particular, we look at the critical appraisal of Sir Walter Raleigh (the Oxford professor, not the Elizabethan courtier), Virginia Woolf, Edmund Gosse, and Stuart Curran.
This lecture is part of a larger course on the poetry of Christina Rossetti. The full course can be found here: www.massolit.io/courses/the-p...
MASSOLIT works with university academics to produce short video lectures in the arts, humanities and social sciences. It is available to schools and colleges on an institutional license as well as via private subscription: www.massolit.io/?source=yt

Christina Rossetti is simply a great poet - I was holding a boof of her poetry and a friend near me told me I was holding the book and a friend near me siad I was holding it as if it were the bible. I said irwas a Bible. I am an ateist but find her relighious poetry convincing in a metaphorical sense.

Either I'm half asleep or the esteemed speaker is jumping too fast from one thread to another and sometimes reversing the leap.

Virginia Woolf's criticism of Rossetti's castrated poetry doesn't necessarily allude to the latter's lack of divine love; rather it's this very divine love which seems to have robbed her poetry of romantic love....and I thought the esteemed speaker was making this simple point unnecessarily convoluted....or maybe it's better to say goodnight to the waking world and be done with words words words

I agree that Robert Browning has been vastly overrated in comparison to Browning.
