As a German... we really are silent xD... but they are most likely worried that they disturb the routine (not only in sports :D) and admire it in silence, because they dont want to irritate the athletes 😊... that they can perform their best, with more concentration. So a lot of shushing could also be because they admire/want to talk about your skills, but still dont want to disturb you 🤗

Just shows how different cultures do things differently and interpret things differently. As an American, I can tell you that in the U.S., total silence would be interpreted as disapproval or dislike unless an announcer specifically asked the audience to be silent to avoid distraction. We tend to be loud and believe in encouraging the athletes verbally. They grow up with it and are used to it so noise isn't distracting to them. In that case, silence for American athletes can be really loud and distracting, if that makes sense.

As a European, just to clarify, we stay silent to respect the athletes and let them focus; and not distract them. Once the performance is over, we then cheer. So, it's done out of support, fair play and respect.

As a French person, it's the same over here: usually the audience stays quiet during a performance, be it athletic or artistic (during a dance show for instance). Then we clap and cheer at the end. It's a way of showing respect to the athletes and not to disturb them. Very interesting cultural perspective with your American teammates!

@@mygirldarby Yes, if someone disturbs the social norm, we point it out. I think it is very weird that you think someone should be allowed to disrespect others and be rude. We do tend to stay quiet for golf and tennis but most sports and athletes like the cheering crowds! They use it to advantage or have learned to ignore it the way I learned to read books on the schoolbus. Lol. Plus fan comes from term fanatics and most fans aren't exactly shy. 😆
