Brilliant game/sim, many thousands of hours in 1946, with mods it really shines. Shame it doesn't have any proper VR support or it would still have a much larger player base!

11 years, released January 2013. This is IL-2 Sturmovik: Great Battles, which is running on an upgraded version of Rise of Flights game engine. Completely separate game. You're thinking of L-2 Sturmovik original, released 2001 and currently bundled as IL-2 Sturmovik: 1946

You can turn the mini map off and there is a full screen map you can open for navigation. Depending on difficulty settings the maps will show or not show friendlies and enemies. You can also remove your plane from the map.

pls try war thunder, its better and its free. You can use arcade mode for arcade gameplay and simulator mode for extreme realism and it has realistic flying and crash physics.

This is actually an very realistic Simulator... i have the old version IL-2 Ultimate Edition and i play it for over 10 Years... its like riding a bike... if you can start, fly, fight and land... you will do it even with heavily damaged plane.. =D

It's more sim than War Thunder. There is no reason to fly from the 3rd person view in IL-2, except for making videos. It is harder to fly than War Thunder. You have to manually control a lot of the engine and cooling functions, but to start the plane you press a button and it automatically goes through the procedure.
