"slow cinema" being a place instead of a narrative is the best description for two of my favourite films, "Stalker" and Bi Gan's "Long Day's Journey into Night".

I can see why people find stillness calming, or stillness unnerving, which is why it was an excellent thing to watch during the boring days of the pandemic.

Part of what keeps art alive is the active discussion and production of content around it, in spite of monetary gain. The world needs fresh voices and it fills me with hope- for my generation (gen z), and my own artistic endeavors, to see that you're new to youtube and achieving growth on this video. Please- even if you don't see immense gain, even if you only maintain a small audience, even if you upload inconsistently, what videos like this do go far beyond the entropic mush of online content grinding. I remember being unable to get sleep on a Saturday midnight, I pressed play on a movie called An elephant standing still or something like that, oh man, I didn't know the length or a synopsis, it was SLOW and like FOUR HOURS, I experienced many different states through the movie, at some points being glued, others lost, questioning, mad that was so long, but I ended it. Later it was on my head for weeks.

Slow cinema can be so mesmerizing and terrifying all in the same context. I had to stop watching “Uncle Boonmee Who Can Recall His Past Lives” cause the movie’s stillness and surreal atmosphere made me feel like i was going nuts, despite how tender and ethereal most of it felt

I used to love slow cinema before KZfaq and social media. I not able to appreciate it anymore. I barely can watch a short essay like this without skipping. Saddest thing. Lost control of my eyes and brain.

I follow several movie review / analysis channels and this just came up for me. The title intrigued me enough to watch it, I was expecting it to be interesting but there was so much more. Although I have a limited(ish) taste in cinema I often find reviews or analyses of techniques in movies that I haven't seen to be very interesting. Absolutely fantastic video and I hope you do many many more.

She seems very inspired by Chantel Akerman's work, that they are both eerily similar in shots, tone, and outcome. About the everyday lives of women in duty. Nina's version takes place mostly in Nevada, and Las Vegas which is for the title of movie. Great analysis video, I'll be checking these movies out!

Was playing animal crossing while watching this video haha (I guess that defeats the purpose of slow things but oh well). It hit close to my pandemic experience as well, I tried to create routine to keep me sane, and animal crossing definitely helped with that. I love how this video feels "slow" too, from no background music to little editing and simple titlecards. Such a good video.

The Seventh Continent is the only film that I can say destroyed me, I was unable to eat for a day after that and found it impossible to get out of that headspace for days. I find the film making more and more sense almost a decade since I watched it, and am still afraid to go back to it. Haneke is just one of those rare, rare directors that gives off this sense that he and his films know something about humanity that we all also know deep in our unconscious but are too superficial to realize it. His films realize it though, and its like the camera is forcing us to realize those things too by taunting us the way it just stays there and does nothing.

I like it! never knew there is a genre called slow cinema, and I happens to find out some of my favorite movies are actually in this category, while some others don't. Recently I'm interested to make a Tarkvosky video, and this video helps me and gives plenty of inspirations.

I still recover from seeing Der siebente Kontinent.. the ending is so hard to take.

I find it funny how I both understand this video in terms of games but I don’t understand this with film, I guess I need simulation that sometimes art or simply existing, I’m constantly listing to music or watching a video where someone talks about things I may or may not care about, it’s interesting to listen to another perspective and learn about something I’ve never really thought about

The music video to Mapper by Infinity Shred reminds me of 2001 in a couple shots, though its story bits start right at the beginning before things take a very different turn. It's easily my favorite music video ever.

At first I thought you might be misremembering _Andrei Rublev_ because the attack on Vladimir certainly is not "slow" in the sense you're describing... maybe. In retrospect, that extraordinarily violent sequence is so extreme that it's almost impossible to process, and its sense of time is disrupted by the intercutting with the two brother's failed "reconciliation" and halted in the end by Rublev's conversation in the ruined cathedral with the ghost of Theophanes. It's chronology is that of nightmare rather than of narrative. Of course, "The Bell" is hardly conventional even if it is nominally realistic. I'm glad you included some of most jaw-dropping shots of the casting (how can molten metal look so hot in black and white?) and hope they lead more people to watch the film. I showed _Andrei Rublev_ to students in a medieval history class who likely had never seen a film in another language, much less one like this. They were engrossed for the entire length and a little shaken up at the end of it. I still think it may be the best movie yet made. (I also showed them _La passion de Jeanne d'Arc_ and, just to prove that I'm not a completely dour person, _The Court Jester_ in the same class.)

Great video essay, i normally cant stand slow cinema there just something with the lack of narritve or slow pacing or no plot points that drive me insane. I always wait for something anything to happen and skip to that part. Rather then the movie being calming they are unsettling to me. That is why my favorite slow movie is shoah.

When I saw this title, not knowing what slow cinema is, the first film that came to mind was the recent "Skinamarink". It certainly polarized viewers like me who were ignorant of this style of film. I've never successfully watched 2001 from start to finish. I've tried 3 times and fell asleep each time.

Great video. Never heard of slow cinema before. Pretty cool. Also definitely subjective taste lol. Enjoyed the animal crossing element here too, ties into the themes of your essay well. The Austrian/German family being based on a real family found dead among all their dead possessions, reminds me of another fucked up story about a family who all killed each other in an apparent suicide pact after the daughter went insane it seems. Really creepy videos out there of her. Something was definitely wrong.

Fantastic essay. One of very few that I don't think would be fair to criticize. It is far more than an essay on a cinematic genre. It is a commentary on experiencing day-to-day life. I wish people like Zizek, Sean Carroll, Donald Hoffman, and other nut cases would watch it and stop talking about all that is irrelevant to here and now.
