Fun fact the cult of dionysus was mainly centered around parties, being high and/or drunk, orgies, and horrifically graphic human sacrifices. The most famous story of the cult is when some members murdered the God orpheus 😋

They truly were glamorous, mischievous, and polyamorous, and I'm gonna remember them and this song for the rest of my life. The use of the word “ecstasy” is very clever. The word is greek for “standing outside oneself” and it originated in Dionysus’s cults to describe the state of mind where you’ve done so many drugs you have an out of body experience (or at least you don’t feel like your body is yours). They believed that when that happened, Dionysus himself had taken your place in your body. So it was a good reference. That’s also where the word enthusiasm comes from. It means “possessed by a god”. Another reason why it’s a good word to use is because it’s also the name of a drug, albeit a modern one. This song feels like it could apply to any time period though so it’s fine. I wonder if the people who named that drug knew that the word had its roots in a drug cult.

Maybe, but ecstasy the drug also just induces the exact feeling of ecstasy (in terms of how it's colloquiallly defined usually) times 10-20 at least lol; it's not especially likely to cause out of body experiences on its own I don't think unless you took a shit ton maybe

I've been working on a trans comic character for years that has long hair covering her eyes who hangs out at a place called The Bacchanalia to drink and swing and hear good music. Partying in a house of Bacchus, the Roman version of Dionysus, means she's essentially in a cult of Dionysus. I heard this song, saw that iconic pic and was like "Damn, did I somehow steal their idea with mind powers? Do I have mind powers!?" Turns out I don't have mind powers, btw...
