Same! The Cure made their way onto my turntable and into my heart circa 1983-84. Of course, information was so much more limited in those days, especially in small town USA. If the record store in the larger small town didn’t have it, did it really exist?

The cure were supported by joy division at a pub in London on December 28th 1978 to a crowd of only 30-40 people which left both bands disappointed by the venue and money they got from it, later that night, on the way home to Manchester, Ian Curtis had his first ever seizure and was clinically diagnosed with epilepsy, a month later. Joy division became a big influence for the cure and Robert Smith and this cover feels like a tribute to them

joy division supported the cure in london in march 4th of 1979 so such event didn't happen that way. the gig you were referring to was on december the 27th, to only 30 people, and on the way back home, ian had his first recorded seizure. although i have to admit, that version of the events would make this cover feel way more haunting...

This is what a cover should be: recognizable as the original, but with the band placing their own flare on it. The Cure pays this reverence to the magic of Joy Division. Now if they could cover Joy Division's "In A Lonely Place" ... that would be a spectacle to behold :-)

If a “cover” sounds the same as the original what’s the point? There are some brilliant covers out there, I’m like you, make it sound like the original but make it your own. In this case nobody can mimic Joy Division apart from New Order so Fat Bob does his thing with great success. However Ciccone Youth doing “Into the Groovey” leaves me wondering WTF. “Just Can’t Get Enough” by Taste of Sugar, I mean I remember dancing to that. I often ask myself why.

Ian was shafted by fate. The man was leading a popular band then BAM! the epilepsy gets so bad that the drums would set it off. That'd be Hell. I'd want to kill myself too, so I ciuldask God if I was Hitler in my past life to have my dream come to life and then have it taken away, just barely out of reach.

Josh Briggs and Arno, I dont think Marco is comparing it to the original. He's just simply saying the drum line on this song sucks, in general. I agree as the first thing I noticed is that the drums do not match this type of song. Any drummer could have made a better drum line for this song than this. Just a mistake on The Cure's part.

I love the Cure and Joy Division, I am an avid listener of both. This cover in my opinion is exactly how I cover should be. JD is post-punk, while The Cure has more of a gothic, alterntative, new wave sound. A good cover shouldn't be an exact copy of the original cover, it should be an artist's tribute to the other in thier own way.

What???? It's the most "exact" cover I've ever heard by a famous artist. Regardless of exactitude, I think it's a lackluster, gratuitous cover. If I were as brilliant a songwriter as Smith, I wouldn't produce this cover, and if I did, I wouldn't publish it. The 1 good thing is seeing that Smith apparently loves Joy Division, just like I do.

I am a Joy Divison fan. And a The Cure fan. I love both versions and I consider them completely different songs because each band has their own style and they keep it on the music.
