Beloved by Uzbeks, Tajiks, Kyrgz, Kazakhs, Pashtuns and Turkmens as well as Afghans, the equestrian sport known as Kokpar or Buzkashi is a rugged, and traditionally extremely violent, game similar to polo with one surprising twist; rather than hitting a ball with mallets toward a goal, players vie for control of a headless animal carcass.

Hello Simon. I actually had the chance to ride in one of the games in northern Afghanistan in 2001. I even managed to score. The chaos in the middle of the scrum is insane. I was actually bit by another rider’s horse, I punched the horse and his rider laughed at me. I have pictures from the game if you and your staff are interested is seeing them. After an hour or so of gameplay, my military teammates and I were battered, exhausted but thrilled to death for having been extended the invitation to participate by Mazar I Sharif’s Governor Atta. An Associated Press war corespondent was in the crowd an “snuck” a photo of the “crazy Americans” playing goat polo. That picture would find its way into The NY Times in Dec 2001. Our chain of command had “a few questions” for us once the paper hit the stands. Have a great day. Love your content across all your channels. Keep up the great work. Especially love the Biographics channel. Helps me feed my mind everyday. Thanks again. 🖖🏼

When I was a kid a new neighbors' kid came over when I was trying to catch a chicken. I finally caught it and wrung its neck and the kid ran home screaming. I didn't understand what the problem was so I just started soaking the chicken in hot water. The next thing I know is my father, the neighbors father, and a cop was walking around the house. My dad and the cop knew immediately what was going on and knew I wasn't doing anything wrong, but none of us could convince any member of that family that we were all horrible people. To this day, it still surprises me that people really have no idea where food comes from. I have this mental image of God separating light from dark, making trees and animals... And the eternal Walmart... And it was good.
@nellz72
@nellz72 4 жыл бұрын
Thank you so much for sharing this story. I have met people like this. One in fact, that was highly critical of my family hunting and fishing. (For food purposes, never "sport") They insisted that it was "much more humane to just go to the grocery store and buy meat and seafood". And yes, they actually said it just like that. I love your analogy of the eternal Walmart!

I watched this just outside Kabul September 1970. It was held in honour of the Kings birthday.The field was about a mile square and they used every bit of it, including the U. N. part of the car park where we were. The French ambassadors Citroen got quite a few hoof marks on it, black, shiny and dented. Although we were in the middle of a melee, no spectator got hurt but did get covered in dust. It was quite a scene. I had my 22nd birthday there a week later and celebrated with a beer which cost a US dollar and that was quite an expense in comparison at the time. I'll never forget it, Afghanistan is a breathtaking country that plays a rough game on beautiful horses.

I got to see bushkashi games just outside Mazar-E-Sharif. The folks around there had an area about the same size of a football field where they played the game. There was also camel fights and dog fights going on at the same time. It was a time to get together with other men of the area to sell/ trade horses, sell/ smoke some hash and generally a good time is had by all. With the possible exception of the goat. You did get to see some amazing horsemanship though.

I first heard about this game through news coverage of the World Nomad Games. They've been held in Afghanistan for several years now, but I believe the 2020 Games have been planned to take place in Turkey. There was actually a US team of 10 at the 2018 competition, made up mostly of movie stunt riders and rodeo workers.
