Very nice video. The answer to the final question is the Library of Congress manuscript is actually mislabeled. It’s not “Jeru” by Gerry Mulligan (which is a bouncy tune with a busy melody that appeared on Birth of the Cool) but rather “Teru” by Wayne Shorter, easily verifiable by just listening to the recordings of both.

Excellent catch! That probably means the date is wrong as well on that - which means that the Mingus example from 1957 might still be the earliest one.

So why not a symbol like a square or circle for minor 7th?

Diminished already claimed the circle. How about a rhombus?

0:53 "That could get confusing," you say of "M7". Why? Is it just because some people's sloppy handwriting can make it hard to tell an uppercase from a lowercase "M"? Or is there another reason it could get confusing?
Why is this piece of music so influential?
