The Curious Case of the Hope Diamond

The Hope Diamond’s story begins over a billion years ago, when carbon under immense pressure formed the larger diamond from which the Hope Diamond would spring. Not only was the mother stone large, but it was given a rare blue color due to the presence of high amounts of the element boron within the carbon.
The diamond’s story in human hands, as well as the origins of the alleged curse that goes with it, has murky beginnings that date back to the 1600s. French gem merchant Jean-Baptiste Tavernier acquired the stone around the 1660s while in India. It is thought to have been originally mined from the Kollur mine in the Gunter district of Andhra Pradesh. Who originally owned the gem is unknown. Tavernier is believed to have possibly acquired the diamond through theft. Unconfirmed accounts stated that the original form of the Hope Diamond was as stolen from a statue of Sita, the goddess wife of Rama, who was the seventh Avatar of Vishnu. Thus, setting the curse in motion. Whether or not it was Tavernier or someone else who allegedly plucked the stone from the statue is lost to history.
What was confirmed is that...

Diamonds, in general, are overrated due to their perceived prestige due to expense. Cubic zirconia tend to get chosen over diamonds by people who don't know gemstones that well because of the higher brilliance and fire, assuming that the more glittery one must be the real deal while the shiny but relatively tame one must be the cheap substitute. Never mind the lies that de Beers has been spreading for however long it's been now. They've basically monopolized them by building their headquarters on top of the biggest mine in Africa and "forgetting" to do due-diligence when they buy them from others, who often turn out to be criminal organizations.

Simon, ever consider doing an episode on the Radium Girls from Ottawa, IL? I graduated from the town and had no idea of the history of it until I lived there. It is seriously messed up to look back in hindsight with what took place. Radium City is the only documentary that I have been able to find (filmed around 1985-1986), rather a hush-hush topic.

Interesting footnote: Gloria Stewart--the wife of actor James Stewart--was married to Edward (Ned) Mclean, whose mother owned the Hope Diamond. It was not a happy union, although, it produced two sons. Later, when commenting about her first marriage Gloria quipped that with her marriage came the curse. I don't know if it's true. However, Ned was killed in an auto accident, and his and Gloria's oldest son Ronald McClean was killed in action in Vietnam in May 1969. Gloria and Jimmy went on to be married for 45 years until she died of Stage 4 lung cancer right before Valentine's Day 1994. Jimmy followed 3 1/2 years later on July 02, 1997.

I´m surprised that you do not mention the fact that the Hope Diamond, like all blue diamonds, is this color because of a minute quantity of boron adulterant. Whatismore, with exposure to UV light, the Hope not only brightly fluoresces in its _complementary color,_ being red and green, glowing orangish-red, but it does so for over a minute. *Fun Fact:* I viewed the Hope Diamond many years ago in a traveling exhibit, so I cannot vouch for the fact that its permanent display, with three inches of tempered glass, is near a floor-drain. They say, when the Moon drowns in blood and craven spirits roam the forlorn Earth, during the last stroke of midnight merely gazing upon it will make one´s head explode. Thus the drain? We can only surmise.

Been to the Smithsonian and seen it. Wasn't particularly impressed, just a shiny bit of rock that people carved into a shape with flat sides. Never really understood the obsession with gemstones, especially in modern times where there's so much more useful purposes for them than looking pretty fixed into some bits of metal and draped on a human.
