Cornish Walking Trails

Күн бұрын

Our video starts at a secluded car park on the Roseland Peninsula, close to Towan Beach, renowned for its wildlife, in particular the common and grey seals. From here we take the South West Coast Path towards Portscatho, a former fishing harbour.
We discover lots of interesting stories about Portscatho from a well regarded Methodist Minister to a Wycliffe filming location. We also explore the pub in search of a hole in the wall with an unusual purpose but will we find it? We did however, find a brilliant 'pasty bench'!
This walk has been created by us here at Cornish Walking trails and if you would like the instructions, please join us on Patreon, / cornishwalkingtrails where you will find other walk instructions and additional content, tiers apply.
The standard description bit…
We are Sarah and Andrew and we film our walks around Cornwall and publish on KZfaq, usually weekly. Sometimes we stay in accommodation in Cornwall and upload our vlog. Sarah is fascinated by sea glass and likes to collect it so there may be the occasional sea glass video too. The channel is a hobby and we both have normal day jobs!
Frequently asked questions:
What camera do we use?
Since December 2018 we have used: Canon Powershot G7x MkII
How do I find the books you use?
Most are still in print although some we pick up in charity shops and may be available on Amazon secondhand. Please refer to the video for the book titles. Every video shows the book three times. Sorry but we can’t put a link in every description.
Best time of year to visit Cornwall?
We love May, June for flora and fauna, July and September for spectacular scenery.
What is your dog’s name?
Sorry but we do not release the name of our dog, perhaps you can make up your own name for him.

I'm a huge fan of Wycliffe, and love playing 'spot the location' when watching. The episode you referenced is probably one of few I've not yet seen. Just love old churches ~ fascinating anecdotes to be found in memorials, often testaments to wonderfully eccentric individuals. A joy to watch doggie digging on the beach (in his element!), and more gorgeous sea-glass finds! The sword, needle & feather found in the pub fireplace is an 'apotropaic' ~ a concealment to ward of evil spirits/bad luck (all objects with a repellent pointy end). It's a folklore tradition stretching back centuries as fireplaces were deemed a weak point in the home where evil sprits could easily enter. The owners of the pub should carefully put them back...just to be on the safe side!

That is such an interesting comment and really adds to the video. Hopefully the new owners are aware of its importance now, and will respect the sentiment! Sarah :)

@@CornishWalkingTrails Call it serendipity/instinct but you two so often seem to home-in on something unusual/fascinating during your pre-planned walking trail ~ that's why I love following CWT...many surprises! That particular trio of objects was a rare one ~ the most common 'charm' object found secreted away in old houses (under floorboards, attics, in walls & staircases) being a single shoe.

As you say Sarah a Stunning walk to Portscatho, I have never been there, the former smugglers cove beach looked inviting, but inaccessible, wise not to go down all the way Sarah, always best to send Andrew first! What a beautiful little chapel and the history behind it, it’s amazing what you two Intrepid traveler’s come up with! I watched “Wycliffe” religiously, I thought Jack Shepherd was a cool 😎 dude back in the day, and I remembered the property they used for filming also the episode, at Gunwalloe Cove, so I had been to Portscatho after all! had to smile when Andrew said he hoped no one was watching him lingering and looking behind refuse bins, only me and several thousand happy viewers!! I wonder who filled the hole in 🤔 it’s a mystery, I agree Sarah Shoot indeed! It’s weird how Andrews camera died filming the Seals 🦭 maybe they have heard all the Seal jokes! 🥴 thanks for a very entertaining outing, looking forward to your next one, “👌” 🤗👋

Nice video, Sarah and Andrew. Lovely part of Cornwall. One of my favourite walks is to park at Porth and walk round St. Anthony Head. Remember going down that way when there was a minke whale washed up on one of beaches near Portscatho many years ago.

My son and myself go too stay for our 3 week holiday in Portscatho. This is a fantastic place that is so accessible for traveling around. The only thing I would recommend is people with walking difficulties should have the advantage of a car, as the Very Steep Hill from Gerrard's too Portscatho is very steep, even with people that haven't got walking difficulties find it very steep and difficult and tiring. Gerrard's and Portscatho are beautiful. 🤗🌻☀️

Aaaah, I see Mr. Scrumptious is back this week (sorry Andrew, I'm referring to The Brown Doggy!)....will he ever find what he's digging for I wonder?! And to end it all, two inquisitive seals popping their heads up. What more could you want on a Friday morning after a 2hour visit to the Doctor! Certainly cheered me up anyway! We had a weekend in Norfolk in November & saw the seals in abundance at Horsey Beach where they have their babies at that time of the year. Fab stuff. I have all the episodes of Wycliffe on the Tivo. Will have to look this one up! Loved Wycliffe. Your vids are always an antidote to the madness of the world. Special times. Love them. x J x

Absolutely love these videos. Pre-Covid-19 we came to Carbis Bay, St Ives or Sennen most years from 1986. Our children grew up loving these holidays and it was a home from home. We've had to shield completely since 3rd March 2020 because some of the family are completely immuno-compromised. Can't see an end to it. 😭. These regular videos help to keep me sane, so many, many thanks for them to both of you. Long may they continue. 👍

@@CornishWalkingTrails Thanks so much to you and Andrew. I hope that you are both keeping well - and your spaniel. We have a King Charles Spaniel, Louie, who is my daughter's medical assistance dog. He's amazing and we only have to mention Cornwall and he goes crazy. Obviously missing England, as he was born I Wellington. Not quite Cornwall (!) but we always pointed it out to him on the way down. A ex-workmate now lives back in Truro but said he had more of an affinity to us in Wales. PS - Can you tell Andrew I like his sense of humour. 😄. Stay safe.

Such a fun adventure, with a bit of everything you are famous for. The view into the Pub demo secrets was extra special, but I loved it all. Winter walks by the beach, and poking into local legends are two of my favorite things. There is the "Sunny Jim" cave with The Cave Store above in La Jolla, CA, as well as two infamous derelict Edwardian period beach cottages. Both have intrigued me since childhood. Seals, sea lions, cormorants and pelicans have taken over the big rock nearby that is now a nature preserve. Beaches a world away from each other, but the feeling they give is the same. So busy these days, so sharing your beach walks is a treat indeed. Cheers! :)

Funny you should mention Wycliffe, I watched a few episodes of it the other night. Back in the 90's it was the only way I could get my Cornwall 'fix' when I wasn't down there. Pure escapism, as in Midsomer Murders. Cornwall and the English countryside appears to be a hotbed of murder, enough to rival Oxford's Inspector Morse! I think it's about time another Cornish detective series was made.... Inspector Heligan perhaps Lol. Any idea when that pub is going to re-open? : ) x
