I have a first year 1989 model of this amp. Yes, the tremolo was always weak. Over 20 years ago Don “The Toneman” Butler in California tweaked it to vintage specs with the appropriate filtering, Mercury Magnetics OT, swap to KT66s and Alnico Weber Blue Dog speakers. Cool amps. Happy 2024 to you and yours and everyone here!

I worked on the head version of this amp. The person got it for a great deal because "the tremolo didn't work". I quickly found it was because the footswitch jack uses the ring and sleeve to make the ground instead of the tip (it was missing its footswitch). I don't know if original marshalls were wired that way...maybe they were trying to make you have to use their footswitch only.

Had a Fender '59 RI Bassman narrow panel sent to me that miraculously wasn't damaged. I say miraculously because the sender used foam peanuts... only...!😮 Was finding/removing peanuts from speaker baskets for hours...!!!😐 There wasn't a square corner on the box when it showed up. You could roll the box across the floor all the way from the front door to my studio...!!!🙄😊 Am glad this Marshall amp wasn't part of a police matter.👍

I'd like to put my vote in for a pair of those sweet and smooth sounding Short Bottle TAD 6L6WGC tubes with the filter caps replaced with 32/32 and 16/16...and maybe a .68 bypass cap on V2 for some extra fun.

Honestly, I open boxes with an Ontario Knives SP2 fixed-blade knife because its original purpose is no longer part of my life and its full-tang blade's balance and rigidity make managing spasticity much easier.

Box cutters just like the stores use to stock are available on Amazon. I bought a black and yellow one with a cord and holder. It was my favorite one used at work.

Having done tons of shipping and receiving over the years, I never liked ordinary box cutters; I've swapped the garden variety utility razor-knife for an Olfa. Those things are surgically sharp and you can just snap a piece off the tip of the blade to get a fresh cutting edge. I've tried just about every industrial razor blade hand utility knife blade known to man and the Olfa blades are better and sharper.

Airbags are also useless for packaging/shipping heavy things like amplifiers because they leak or go "pop". Crushed newspaper works well if balled up and packed tightly into place, but its surprisingly heavy, and will add to the shipping cost. Bubble wrap is great, and weighs almost nothing, but if the bubbles aren't at least 3/4 of an inch high, it's too thin and you'll need like a 100 feet of it to wrap your amplifier...

ERO/Vishay Roederstein MKT1822 (the green ones, not the grey) are a high quality replacement for these grey box caps. Done this multiple times, compared to WIMA they maintained the Sound better, WIMA did sound more HiFi/sterile to me…

Zzounds shipped a brand new, American PRS guitar to a guy that I once had do "repair" work and shipped a set of strings to... it was very, very poor "repair" work... and I will never use him again. I had to drive an hour to pick it up. When I arrived, the guy had opened the box and my guitar was sitting on his workbench. Unbelievable.

With all the changes that need to be made, I would say it’s a total write off. I mean you’re replacing everything. I just had my ‘72 Super Lead looked at by a tech (probably the first time in its life) the only things he replaced was a new Presence pot, removed the death cap, and changed the power tubes. (my request) Guess they were just made better back in the day.

I love my 1959 model Marshall circa 1988 but it seems every time I go to use it it pops or squeals or thuds. The amount of times I’ve had it in the shop getting fixed and it still keeps happening. I might open it up and have a look for obvious issues. What’s the safest way to discharge the caps?

What, are we Earl Stanly Gardner today, Lyle? I use one of those little single edge razor blade loaded slimline boxcutters to open up boxes. I got arrested in Chicago for having that boxcutter, and no permit for it. I also got charged for possessing about 7 other specialty knives that I and everyone else with a working brain consider to be TOOLS and not weapons.

That was from the chassis edge of a different amp. I get tetanus shots as often as they’ll let me. ;)

I was just trying to figure out where you were going with your knife intro. Having turned wrenches professionally for forty years busted knuckles comes with the territory. But it’s been Katrina time frame since getting a tetanus shot for me. Might be wise to have a sore arm once again.
@goodun2974

@@PsionicAudio, smart man to keep your tetanus shot up to date. My wife had a patient once who contracted tetanus from working in her garden: she spent months in a medically induced coma and suffered neurological deficits.
@goodun2974
@goodun2974 7 ай бұрын
@@curtisphilumalee1447, last I remember, tetanus shots for tradespeople should be given every two three years at the most. They used to recommend every 5 years for ordinary folks, but tetanus spores can survive for hundreds of years in dust or dirt, especially in anaerobic conditions; and a nail or piece of sheet metal that cuts or punctures you doesn't have to be rusty in order to infect you.
