The time has come to cover the last remaining Pirates of the Caribbean movie -- The Curse of the Black Pearl. Based on Disney's actions with the Margot Robbie Pirates reboot, this might very well be the last real Pirates movie starring Johnny Depp as Captain Jack Sparrow we're gonna cover. And so this time let's take a look at the heart and soul of Pirates: Jack Sparrow, one of the most recognizable and memorable and iconic movie characters ever created. In what ways was he introduced and handled in The Curse of the Black Pearl set him on the path to becoming the cinematic legend he is today? Let's find out. And hopefully we do get Pirates of the Caribbean 6 with Jack as well as Davy Jones riding a leviathan, at least in some form, instead of just a full on Birds of Prey recreation.

Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl (2003)
Following his surprise-hit American remake of The Ring in 2002, director Gore Verbinski took on Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl, the second of recent films to be based upon Disney theme-park rides (the first being The Country Bears). When Elizabeth Swann (Keira Knightley), the daughter of Governor Swann (Jonathan Pryce) is kidnapped by a group of pirates led by Captain Barbossa (Geoffrey Rush) and taken aboard their ship, The Black Pearl, Will Turner (Orlando Bloom), the young man who loves Elizabeth despite the fact that she is promised to another, sets out to rescue her. Cursed to remain between the living and the dead, Barbossa and his men look like skeletons when basked in the moonlight. When it is revealed that the only thing that can break the curse is Elizabeth's blood, Jack and Will are faced with a race against time and a battle against the undead to save the Governor's daughter.

Birds of Prey (2020)
Director Cathy Yan’s superhero action-drama is a spin-off of 2016’s “Suicide Squad”. It stars Margot Robbie, Mary Elizabeth Winstead and Ewan McGregor. After deciding to operate independently of the Joker, Harley Quinn (Robbie) teams up with Black Canary, Helena Bertinelli, and Renee Montoya to save a young girl from a contract killing that has been initiated by a brutal and narcissistic Gotham City crime lord (McGregor).

Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales (2017)
Jack Sparrow (Johnny Depp) returns for another adventure on the high seas in the fifth installment of Disney's Pirates of the Caribbean franchise. Hunted by the malevolent Captain Salazar (Javier Bardem), Sparrow sets out on a quest to find a mystical artifact known as the Trident of Poseidon, and gains two new allies along the way: a gorgeous astronomer (Kaya Scodelario) and a young sailor (Brenton Thwaites) with a connection to Sparrow's past. Geoffrey Rush, Keira Knightley, and Orlando Bloom co-star. Directed by Joachim Rønning and Espen Sandberg (Kon-Tiki).

In a modern age of making “strong women icons in movies” we should stop and appreciate what made Elizabeth Swan Turner such a spectacular heroine in this trilogy. Emily Blunt’s character in jungle cruise tried to be Elizabeth, but didn’t have what made her great. Instead of spending half of her jokes talking about a woman wearing pants, they made her a strong and valiant fighter who only improved with each movie. She still had fear in the movies, she still had weaknesses, but they were very natural, and she did what she could to overcome them all

My favorite part about Jack is throughout the movie the audience gets to see through his actions that he is in fact a good man. His fight scene with Will is the one that exemplifies this the most. Telling will the shot isn't meant for him, Jack asking several times nicely for Will to move, maneuvering will away from the door so he can just leave, trying to leave to save Will from having a black mark on his record. But the one that i've just recently noticed is the one that's the most telling. When Will returns to the shop and sees Jack's hat he reaches out to grab it,. Jack stops him by hitting Will's hand with the blunt side of his cutlass. If Jack were a truly evil pirate as most people would believe he would've cut off Will's hand without hesitation and then quickly kill him to quiet his shock induced screaming.

It's just a really tight film script all around, honestly.

@TheFunPop
@TheFunPop 3 жыл бұрын
@@specs6637 they’re talking about the fact that the sword Will made, as a theme and tie in to his character, comes up more than once across the trilogy. At the end of the first movie, Norrington tells him “this is a beautiful sword” and he tells Will that he “expects the man who made it would show the same care and devotion to every aspect of his life.” Something like a sword would seem like an insignificant detail, and yet they decide to bring it back at Norrington’s death scene, where he was stabbed by it (by Will’s dad if I remember right?) and Davy Jones takes it for his own saying oh so casually, “nice sword.” It’s possible they bring it up at other moments across the trilogy, but Norrington’s death is the only part I can remember atm.
@scape7212
@scape7212 3 жыл бұрын
I could go on a while taking about the symbolism but I’ll spare you all. The sword’s (TS) existence began in Will’s hands. His skill made it one of the finest, we know this because everyone who held it commented on it’s valor. Norrington welded TS honorably until he was killed. As he died he stabbed Davy Jones with it in a noble response to Jones’ question “Do you fear death?” Jones briefly took ownership of TS ultimately using it to kill Will. The vast irony of TS killing its maker is astounding but anyway...we all know that Will resurrected and TS is now his. TS switched hands throughout the series but remained a part of the story. I like that it’s only been owned by Captains and 2 of those captains were stabbed by it. TS began in Will’s hands and found its way back to them. Almost as if it was made for him from the start. Anyway, I remember reading a book in elementary school about a 200 year old doll and her perception of the world through different owners. TS reminded me of this aspect. Imagine being the sword and perceiving the journey through it’s POV. It tells a story of its own.

A detail that really add some depth to Cpt Sparrow and my personal favourite one is why does he have that P brand and East India Trading company tattoo on his arm: Jack Sparrow actually worked for the East India Trading co. in the past and was appointed captain of a ship named the "Wicked Wench". Cpt Sparrow was tasked by Lord Beckett to cargo some merchandise, but he realised during his voyage that the merchandises he was supposed to deliver were in fact slaves. Jack decided to abort his initial mission and freed the slaves on an island, betraying his employers. Upon hearing this, Lord Beckett chased and caught Cpt Sparrow, branded a "P" on his arm for "'Piracy" to punish him for his act and set the Wicked Wench on fire, darkening the ship's hull and giving it tattered sails. Cpt Sparrow then decided to rename the ship the Black Pearl. This is personally my favourite piece of lore in the franchise because it adds so much depth to the Black Pearl, adding some past history to the ship and actually shows that Cpt Sparrow is much more humane than most people in this era, where a crushing majority of people would see the cruelty of slavery as a mundane thing. This is why the idea of freedom is very dear to him too by the way; seeing those slaves deprived of it and him deciding to give it back to them changed his view of the world forever. I'm just sad the movies dont explain this part of both the Black Pearl's and Jack Sparrow's past.

One thing I would like to add is that Jack Sparrow isn't the "Main Character" of the 1st movie, Will Turner is. Turner plays role of the Audience surrogate which allows a number of fun things to happen for Jack's character: Sparrow gets to be a bit more over the top in his actions while Turner (and the audience) is impressed by him. Turner gets to have the more pure motivations, rescue the girl he loves, while Jack is seemingly motivated by greed for much of the film. Allowing the audience to see him as likeable "bad boy" Turner gets to play the "straight man" role to Jacks wacky antics. Comedy often needs and "Abbot" and "Costello" to truly shine. Turner gets to discover more about himself and the world around him (as an audience surrogate) through Jack's expertise. When all of Jack's antics would start to be to much, you can switch over to Will Turner's plotlines about his Father and love interest for more "Serious" plot lines with out as much tonal whiplash for either character. In the end the fact that Jack Sparrow is the most important character the 1st Pirates movie (as well as the whole franchise); but when he is supported by other strong characters with strong motivations and lifting some of the narrative load of the film, then he gets to truly shine as a larger then life figure in films. As you say, a film icon.

Also, by presenting him as a supporting character, he gets to be a greedy antihero as you said, but that gives the film the opportunity for a twist when Jack acts "out of character" by heroically saving the protagonists. So we get a cathartic revelation that deep down he's not the unscrupulous bastard he's pretending to be. Obviously you can't do that same song and dance in every film and expect the same cathartic results, it's the kind of thing that has diminishing returns, but it's part of what made those first few films so great.

If anyone's interested, the feeling that the entire world started when you were born is called _"ab ovo_ syndrome". It's Latin for "from an egg", basically when your story starts from the very beginning. The other way would be _"in medias res"_ ("in the middle of"), when the story starts from some moment in the middle. That's what a lot of writers miss, that your story and characters aren't born at the exact moment your script starts, or at least most of the time they're not. A good backstory with some lore and some important story details that get revealed in opportune moments - that's what makes characters more real, less like a one-dimensional object.

The interesting thing is that Jack Sparrow, despite being jovial, and fun, and likable, isn’t really relatable. He’s the most larger than life, wacky character that you’d probably meet. Which, I suppose, is the rule of thumb when writing characters, don’t try to make them relatable or likable so that you have characters the audience will like- DON’T do that. You can make relatable characters, and you can make them good people, or likable, but don’t have that be WHY they’re good characters. Have characters endear themselves to the audience by making them interesting. Make elements of their characters compelling, make it so that they have interesting relationships with other characters that you just grin stupidly when you see the two of them interact on screen, make them of any alignment- just make them interesting. Also be sure to make them active characters with choices, not just objects being dragged around by the plot.

One thing they sadly cut later on that gave an interesting insight into Jack's character was his conversation with Beckett. Beckett discusses Jack's betrayal of "liberating" some "cargo" he was supposed to deliver, with Jack turning his wrist to show the P (implying that this was when he was branded), and Jack just replies that people are not cargo. This fits really well with his character, a man who values freedom above everything else. He has little problem sacrificing his friends to effective death to ensure his own individual freedom, but leaving people enslaved is not something he's willing to do. At the least, his own life and freedom would need to be threatened before he'd willingly allow another to be enslaved like that.

Jack is one of the best examples ive ever seen of a character who wants people to underestimate him - he takes advantage of them for that exact reason. he's incredibly clever and quick-thinking, if a bit quirky, and people mistake his quirks for buffoonery. but he's learned that because people *think* he's stupid, its much easier to outsmart them. i love watching his thought process acted out so subtly and clearly on screen. as a kid, the PotC movies were just some funny pirates prancing around doing pirate things, but now i'm older and can follow the story, its amazing how much nuance these seemingly over-the-top movies put into their characters and writing and cinematography. it's genius. another reason Gore Verbinski is one of my favourite directors.

(True story) I was in the third movie, too, as one of Sri Sumbhajee's twins in the Pirate Lord scene so I occasioanlly dress as that character as well. www.imdb.com/name/nm1296401/?ref_=nv_sr_srsg_2

@@TheFunPop Depp is Pirates of the Caribbean.. Meaning that, PotC 5 was bad because Depp didn't play his role, the way he was meant to play it, because of the on-going trials he had with Amber.. Also, did you know that were scenes in previous installments of the franchise that had Jack do something strange and Depp stepped up and said "That isnot Jack.." and then they "fixed" the scenes.. Known for those actions, are the scenes in Buckingham Palace, where he escapes, and another scene in PotC 2 where he tried to escape the natives.. The plot at that time, had the crew fight for Jack's freedom, and Depp said that this wouldnot ideal for his role, to which afterwards he recommended that the crew had to escape alongside Jack Sparrow, in the same place, but in different scenes.. And that's how it happened.. You can see Depp's influence in a scene and how he changed it, if you watch carefully enough.. What I mean, by that, is that the fact that Depp didn't care for PotC 5, doesnot mean that he wouldnot care about PotC 6, ever since the reaction of his fans wanting him back to the franchise.
@TheFunPop

@@greeko7638 Doesn't change the fact that Disney has been bad when it comes to their recent movies, and you're simply _assuming_ he will play the role well. I understand he had things going on at the time, but a series should be allowed to rest when its time comes. The point is, they've already ruined so many plot points in PotC 5 to the point that it's just an absolute mess that I don't want to see ruined further. It's not just Jack's character. So many logistics that were pre-established were retconned or no longer make sense.

The intro of the video made me realize something that really surprised me : the very first time I got exposed to Jack Sparrow was when I was around 6 or 7, when Dead Man's Chest was on TV one night. It's not until I was 19 that I suddenly remembered the franchise and watched it from the beginning, but that's not really the point - the thing is, since I was 6 till then *I still remembered Jack Sparrow* clear as day, name and all, despite never actually seeing him anywhere or hearing about the Pirates movies after that. Truly goes to show that he is THAT memorable, even for a little kid, and for years after. (Oh and Davy Jones also got burned into my mind and I was SO excited to get to the parts featuring him when I rewatched his movie!)

Curse of the Black Pearl is the best of the Potc movies, and Jack’s introduction in the movie is golden In less than 2 minutes, you learn everything you need to know about him, and how no matter how smart you think you are, Jack is smarter, he’s also resourceful, capable, he’s capable, and in later scenes we see all of that showing, he’s always thinking ten steps ahead “It’s a shilling to dock your ship here and I’ll need to know your name” “How about three shillings and we forget the name?” Proceeds to steal a wallet containing 15 shillings Later... “And I suppose you’ll want me to spare the whelp?” “No no by all means, kill the whelp, just not yet, wait for the opportune moment,” Proceeds to betray Barbossa and free Will to get his help in defeating the mutinous crew Or even earlier, when he steals the Dauntless but uses it as a diversion to steal the Interceptor which will be more useful as it’s faster and more readily available, he even sabotages the Dauntless You see these sorts of traits all throughout the series (except in the 4th and 5th ones of course) where Jack will effortlessly outsmart everyone around him One of my personal favourites being in At World’s End when Cutler Beckett has Jack on the Endeavour but Jack uses his figurine to fire a cannon, thus propelling him toward the Black Pearl and the cannon’s shot destroying the Endeavour’s mast I like that scene especially because the one sailor asks “Do you think he plans it all out?” The answer is YES, he plans it all out then finds ways to improvise that plan to victory, combining both madness and brilliance; “It’s interesting how often those two traits coincide,”

I mean... You are certainly entitled to your opinion, obviously... the eye of the beholder and all that... I would however have to argue they are objectively poor quality movies, structurally at least... but it's fine to still enjoy something for what it is and to look past it's short comings. It's all for entertainment in the end, at least when it comes to tv and movies anyway... However they are still far less memorable, far less coherent films... The poor structure and lack of character development or meaningful motivations were major issues in later films however they definitely had redeeming qualities and aren't by any means the worst movie franchise... They're still fun movies...
