The 80s Cyvermen are my all time favourite design. The clear chin is actually the best bit. Seeing the mouth move is subtle, but reinforces the fact they do have fleshy bits in there

I personally think the mondadian cybermen and the invasion cybermen are better the earth shock ones just sound like humans not cybermen the actors do a terrible job and sounding like how cybermen should do

I tend to prefer the 80's Cybermen too. People complain that they sound too Human and too emotional but I like that they're simply stoic and subdued in their emotions rather then devoid of emotion, it makes them more effective bad guys. Also, seeing the Cyber Leader's mouth move shows that they're cyborgs with fleshy bits and not mere robots.

@@FreeAssange Pretty much. Also, they whine that these Cybermen are too emotional but I prefer them that way as they're still being logical, they're simply using subdued emotions as they see value in using them to an extent to achieve their goals. It's no different then when the Daleks created the Cult of Skaro and had its members become individuals to think like their enemies so they can devise ways to destroy them.

That’s actually pretty reasonable. These Cybermen aren’t just brains in suits of armour, there’s a mutilated and ‘enhanced’ human body inside there. Makes sense that their heights would vary.

One of the worst things about this latter era of original Who is that all the companions (and Doctors to an extent) had costumes that stayed the same between every story. The Tardis must have stunk!

And at the hands of those he betrayed Humanity to. I like to think that the Cybermen were disgusted in their own stoic way at his selling out Humanity to them and were looking for an excuse to off him as each Cyberman is devoted to aiding their race in any way possible, sort of like what each Dalek is like. Basically, the Cybermen were better beings then Ringway.

I will say in the 1960s Cybermen stories apart from Tomb of the Cybermen it was jolly difficult to know which Cyberman was in charge of the Cyberarmy I think the CYberleader in Earthshock awesome as he was in billions of ways would have been better with his helmet like his handlebars painted black and also the Cyberliuetenant should have had his silver helmet sporting black handlebars to indicate he was secong in command of the Cybermen after the Cyberleader

I had a life size 80s Cyberman. The working gun and everything. I got tired of him after a few years and broke him up and sold him on ebay. One of my biggest regrets. 😭😭😭

The Cybermen have fallen quite a lot sadly, they used to be sinister, smart, and dangerous. Now they are mostly robotic idiots, they just don't seem much of a threat these days. Hopefully that will change one day and they will be more like they were in the 60s. Not in looks just in how they are acted.

Huh: there's another Cyber Leader at 3:29. In most stories there's only one - I wonder if there's official canon on the ratio of Leaders (and Lieutenants) to normal Cybermen. As someone who grew up with repeats of the classic Doctor Who (on UK Gold) and always loved the Cybermen, it's interesting to compare the older versions to the more metallic post-2005 ones. I don't think the new ones are necessarily bad: I like how solid and armour-plated they feel in action scenes, but on the downside they do feel more like a robot rather than an augmented humanoid. I think the 80s ones did that balance of machine and ex-human pretty well, though in Attack of the Cybermen they were they're suddenly vulnerable to bullets for some reason, and the way to beat them - even for the Doctor - in Earthshock and Attack is mainly 'steal their weapons and shoot them with them' rather than out-thinking them.

There are several Cyber-leaders, one each for the various squads in The Five Doctors (as the same one can't get blown up more than once) but I never noticed the second one here - well done!

The one major issue with this iteration of Cybermen was that for all the talk of lack of emotion they were actually extremely emotional in their speech and actions. Pride, anger, arrogance etc in just this clip alone

He was working for them. In the earlier scene they came to the conclusion that he had lied due to the damaged cyberman. They killed him because they thought he'd deceived them.

I was a Taxi Driver for many years and some of my best customers and closest friends were prostitutes. One of them claimed to have known the Cyber Leader personally, although she didn't have anything nice to say about him. She did tell me that he was a very cruel and cheap customer. She also claimed to have known a couple of girls that the Cyber Leader completely " DESTROYED" their baby factories.

As iconic as Earthshock is, the cybermen here show too much emotion/humanity. Key examples? When the cybermen are discussing breaching the shield. They're not the emotionless beings they're supposed to be.

In all fairness, the original Cybermen weren't exactly emotionless either, moreso apathetic to suffering other than their own. Modern Cybermen also retain some emotions, though mostly in the form of aggression and frustration. There's also Mr. Clever, the Cyber-Planner that took over a little less than half of the 11th Doctor's mind, and he acted quite proud and egotistical. I think it's fine if they display such emotions since the main point is that they don't care about how far they've removed themselves from their humanity and how they're subjecting that conversion to others who don't want it or haven't opted in for it. I think their goal of conversion and their apathy towards humanity should come first, not a strict adherence to their lack of emotions.
