I haven't had a car for two years, and I've biked through two winters in North Dakota so far. Over that time I've really grown attached to biking and I appreciate it a lot more (plus it keeps me in some form of shape) I'm known by my friends as a bicyclist. Good episode, wish I was there riding with them.

I agree, fixies are a gateway drug... I started out with a track bike. It didn't take me long to move onto something with gears, but man.... That bike was pure, unadulterated fun.

Thanks for posting this video. I ride my old dirt bike all the time here in Davis, CA, and have never riden a fixer, or raced, but have lots of friends who do one or the other. Not too many do both, but that seems to be related to age. Younger guys & gals prefer fixers around here, while the older riders gravitate toward the street bikes and racers for regular multi-dozen-mile trips through and around town. If you like bicycles, you'd love Davis, though it is VERY flat.

Cycling even has subcultures within, they touched base with the average joe rider, but when you get on the pro level you see different personalities of riders. There are the super aggressive track riders (like myself) to the speed freak roadies, to the rough and tumble cyclocrossers. this is what makes the sport so great.

I'm with you on that. For me, a bike is mainly the most convenient mode of transportation. I don't embellish my bike, if it's need repair, I don't mind putting a different coloured spare part than the original on it, etc. I still love my bike, though, it gets me where I want to go, it gets me some exercise, etc. Greetz from Belgium!
@ShermanSitter
@ShermanSitter 7 жыл бұрын
interesting. for me a 'normal' bike is a road bicycle! i'm glad you are into it though! what do you use the road bicycle for? do you feel like in the Netherlands a road bicycle is too fast and therefore, maybe a bit frustrating in 'bicycle traffic'? i do like to go fast on my road bicycles even when commuting, but then I have to keep up with car traffic and not bicycle commuters.
@ShermanSitter
@ShermanSitter 5 жыл бұрын
@Bartô N While that is highly subjective, I do understand the opposite perspective. I can be comfortable on a straight bar bicycle for about 5 to 10 miles, then for my back's sake I miss the ability to change positions. Most modern 'go anwhere' road bicycles have a wide handlebar and an upright position comparable to any straight bar bicycle, so you get the best of both worlds, plus now they have adjustable stems so there really is no reason for me to ever get a straight bar bicycle unless I go mountain biking.
@ShermanSitter
@ShermanSitter 5 жыл бұрын
@Bartô N Ah yes. My perspective is from Los Angeles, where you literally fight to stay alive and everything is at least 20 miles apart! :) Dutch bicycles have less use here unfortunately.

Little tip to catch hit and run drivers: always carry a small piece of chalk on you (jersey pocket or in your short pocket) and when you get hit do everything in your power to look and memorize the plate number. Then write it down on the pavement with your chalk.

I've had a bike now off and on about 52 years now, I'm 58. I ride to work if the weather's not too bad that's 20 mile a day, i like to bike-camping which means taking a separate bike with trailer to places like woods and camp there, maybe follow a trail for a bit, maybe just kick back. When I used to live in cities i'd ride my bike everywhere. Some people like a minimalist approach to Bike packing or bike camping, I want a few comforts in my old age. I don't intend to quit anytime soon.

has soulpancake ever done a bike commuters subculture? do they even do sub-subculture? I haven't got any numbers on hand, but it feels like we're coming up. Also, joel750, read some bike history. Anyone know of a bike (used or new) that can handle a lot of torque and handle 45+mph? My current bike is a 1970's Schwinn Le Tour and it's limiting me to about 30mph. The whole bike from the handlebars to the frame to the rims all flex from the power I put out and it's all steel aside from the handlebars, neck, crank and wheel hubs (aluminum). I'm not looking to spend a whole lot of money on a bike, but I do want a fast one that can handle high speed.

in the Netherlands we go everywhere on a bicycle, well... everywhere within at least 10 miles , even the small children and the old people. that's why these kinds of things always seem so weird to me. in the Netherlands you learn how to ride a bike when you are 3 years old and don't stop untill you are in your 80's unless you are crippled in some way or something.

I cant' argue with what you said. Davis has more extreme bike fanatics per square foot than any city I know, and has a number of bicycle-related claims to fame. There ARE also a few bicycle/pedestrian over-passes over the highways which abut Davis, which constitute its only elevation changes. Help me convince the City of Davis to lobby for legislative changes to allow a bike/ped bridge from Davis Commons to East Olive Drive. It could solve the access problem and transform downtown Davis.
