@@kickinbackinOC Unfortunately, it hasn't been a regression. In fact, excluding the last handful of years, we are probably the most progressive we have ever been as a nation. Unfortunately, we are still disgustingly in the past on so very many fronts. At least now these issues are recorded at every moment and they cannot simply be denied any longer. It is a long, hard road, but I believe in our ability to be kind, decent human beings. The protests give me hope.

I mean, there is a joke in there somewhere, where the right claims the left are a bunch of "triggered snowflakes", while it is FAR easier to offend a typical right wing person than it is to offend a typical left wing person. Granted, there are still plenty of easily offended people on the left, and some, I assume, not as easily offended people on the right. Admittedly, it would be best if the main conflict in the US was a class struggle all along, but elites were smart, and they divided along cultural and racial lines. Nowadays, it might honestly be too late. The elite have truly consolidated almost all wealth, and power, and it will take a miracle to set things right without SEVERE casualties, and even then only if all people unite.

Antonio C-P Truth. Almost the entirety of popular "news media" on "both" sides is just frothing sensationalism. It isn't Fox's "conservative" stance that bothers me so much as how they go about it - and in this way, they stand out to me the most. That said, the rest aren't really any better. The best recommendation I could make to anyone is just to get your news from multiple sources, trying to include dryly factual reports in the mix with all the editorials - and draw your own conclusions from the mix while being aware of the biases held by each source.
@dhoffnun
@dhoffnun 9 жыл бұрын
Antonio C-P I also want to point out a different thing... I think the reason that I and a bunch of other people enjoy Comedy Central's silly editorial "news" programs more than Newscorp's inflammatory editorial "news" programs has more to do with the flavor of the content than the content itself. CC raises heavy issues with a light heart. They make infuriating stuff hilarious - and it's funny when they're wrong, too. Fox, instead, uses emotions of fear, anger, and the in-group mentality to deliver their content. It makes me physically upset to watch programming like that - and yet, I can totally deal with some goofy guy making a joke about horrible violence in the middle-east. I think having different voices (the more the merrier!) out there is essential for the American Experiment to work out - but I also think that the voices capable of humor and subtlety catch the ears of many people easier than otherwise. Flies and honey and all that.

A crime is commited, the state aknowledges it, pays (rightfully) due to a settlement, yet no one gets arrested?

We've been through this before. Many times. If I remember right this is what started Black Lives Matter. I'm hopeful that this time at least some progress is and will be made because of just how much it all got thrown in our faces (a lot of cops just apparently saying fuck humanity during these protests and beating up everybody, including journalists and random bystanders). I've been in a lot of uncomfortable conversations this last few weeks, for the better, and Minneapolis is actually charging the cops for murder + currently working on a police "do over". So I'm cautiously hopeful this time around. But I'm not going to be too surprised if we see this again in another year.

How can someone, nowadays, think that, without empirical evidence, is better or smarter than anyone else?! Ofc he/her can, but in the end there are questions (real issues) that go beyond anyone's little life problem may be...And that's why I LOVE HUMANITY! He basically said the whole sympathy cop out statement "that could have been my child" Your statement is completely wrong and at the very best ignorant... Obama actually made statements about how they had to come to justice and find out what happened in those cases, but what did you seriously expect him to do? It's literally out of his jurisdiction to make any judge on what happens to these murderers, and is in no position to even say whether he thinks the murderers are guilty regardless of how obvious it is. Nixon got in major shit and almost screwed up the proceedings to the Charles Manson trial by simply staying that he thought Manson was guilty (because it was painfully obvious he was). Obama is too smart to make a mistake like that. Here in Canada, bad cops kill black people too-but they will kill anyone who scares them in the slightest-from kids to seniors, natives to veterans. Retraining is obviously needed-everywhere. Yes, I'm a big white guy-but I've had a cop's gun to my head: Looking past the cop's white knuckles and into his eyes, all that I saw was his fear. I was behind the wheel, had my hands up, apologized, and finished every calm answer with "sir." That helped A LOT-but I wonder how different things might have gone if my skin was darker. I wonder what _Gandalf the Great Black_ would have as an epitaph: maybe ... Washington DC's motto - _Justitia Omnibus,_ *Justice For ALL.* _"These things can go off."_ Yeah-don't point guns too quickly.

Brandon Lester The problem isn't as bad in Canada-but our population is considerably less too. Checking recent history, even with the provincial review boards, there's been racial profiling, unarmed black men killed by white police officers-and no charges laid. This "phenomenon" could easily be called a *global problem.*

j trace Yes-both-and more. Not just training but *continuing education* and evaluation can help immensely. Likewise, it really does help civilians to not appear threatening in any way. Police do scare easily-because of the nature of their profession. Still, the bad cops need to be weeded out, rejected, and (a few) maybe even kept on a watch list. All sorts of people apply to be police-even those with mental health issues. Good cops serve and protect; bad cops shoot first, ask questions -later- ... well, ... dead people can't answer. It doesn't take a genius to know that a bad cop shot and killed Tamir Rice-but guns aren't the problem-as we saw with Eric Garner. Breathing is a fundamental right.

I have often wondered how long someone can be a police officer, on average, before suffering from Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. The carnage they see at crime scenes, the state of victims of violent crime and the constant stress of putting their lives on the line everyday could easily traumatize someone. I figure it is just a matter of time. I would wager that many cases go undiagnosed and untreated. Maybe we work these guys too hard. Maybe we should just assume that an officer has PSTD after a certain amount of time on the job has been served and provide treatment accordingly. I also think we should pay them more money for their service which might help to justify requiring that higher standards be met before someone can be a police officer, including an extensive psyche evaluation. Just a thought.
@gandalfthegreatwhite4393
@gandalfthegreatwhite4393 9 жыл бұрын
Chick Sage IMO, people who haven't had PTSD have a hard time comprehending it. Interesting thought, yours-if only the current government wasn't hell bent on cutbacks to health care services.... *$36 billion* is a bit much. Again IMO, if it were scientifically deemed _necessary_ for health-why not?-police should get in line-right behind veterans. The problem is that good ideas cost the government money-that they don't want to spend. (They have _other plans_ for it.)

+RainPoetry - Exactly. To say "I am not racist at all" before even thinking about it properly, is the same as saying "It doesn't matter how racist I am, I ain't changing for nobody". We can never grow if we don't admit we're not already perfect, and nobody really reaches perfect, so life becomes either a journey of change from an innocent but naive state, through various partially informed states, to a relatively aware state if we're open-minded and determined enough... or it becomes a journey of random changes motivated largely by narrow-minded self-interest and a hopeless desire to avoid all change. And that's coming from someone who *hates* sudden, unnecessary changes in life.

Antonio C-P I'm not sure this is entirely on the mark either. How can a machine indict you of a crime, and if the crime is not witnessed by a person how is it a crime? Crime requires Victims, perpetrators and witnesses. The witnesses give the statement to the peace officer, the peace officer brings it to a judge. This is recording footage of a roadway and reviewing it later. That would be entrapment at the very least. Using the freedom of the people against them in order to criminalize a normal behaviour. For one the cyclon cop (the video machine) is unable to judge, and it requires a human brain to make decisions like this. Sometimes the cop doesn't punish everyone on the road because "thats fucking stupid". People have the right to be secure in their persons from the intrusive eyes of government.
