• Smallwood Lake Dam ove...
taken May 19, 2020 afternoon. The Dam at smallwood lake.
Located in mid-MIchigan, USA, this was part of the 2020 midland flooding event.
There are 4 man made makes in this chain. This dam held along with the dam above it (secord lake)
The dams below this one both failed, starting with the dam at wixom lake, then Sanford lake.
Some people complained that the original was cut into small pieces and difficult to see what was happening.

I lost my family home of 50 years last May after having it flood 6 feet on three separate occasions. We lost everything. The county took it and demolished all of the homes surrounding it. I live in Ellicott City.. my heart will never be whole again. My neighbors got married in their 20s, moved into their house, and are now in their mid 80s and they lost theirs too.. That was my home, my everything. It was all I ever knew. You don't know the power and strength of water until it's right in front of your eyes, sweeping away every last smile and memory. Now I'm stuck living in a trash bottom floor apartment with neighbors above me who do nothing but deprive me of sleep and sanity. I've never felt so low.

The media isn't even reporting about this dam, looks like this one failed first to me. I saw this footage first and heard about this dam first, but I saw it on a Facebook post that someone else linked to me. If this is the original drone operator they should get paid for it. I think the end of the clip I saw showed more of the bulldozer pushing rocks into the side there, and then the drone flying back to the people who operated it. Unless that was a different person.

Not really the left side is by design a emergency overflow. It looked to be functioning as it is supposed to. In a situation like this you don't want the main dam to fail uncontrolled. So the emergency spillway is used as a control failsafe to slowly erode to avoid sudden failure that would be really bad. As the emergency spillway slowly erodes it slowly let's off the water out of the lake like a controlled fail. Had it not been doing what it was designed this dam would have failed catastrophic.

This dam was created almost 100 years ago to bring electricity to a rural area. Good idea in its time. But, it was allowed to exist - and deteriorate - because it produced a lake that increased “waterfront” property values - and tax base. Poor planning, zoning and wishful thinking doomed the folks downstream.

It is not Federal responsibility to maintain local projects, but local government should be held accountable. This being stated, it is not a trade off between this LOCAL Infrastructure project and national defense, but it is a trade off between local spending projects, which I will admit, I don't know the needs and wants of the local population enough to understand what projects were favored before proper maintenance of this facility.

If you live on what used to be Wixom Lake I suggest that you plant wild rice on the old lake bed. This will provide an incredible food source for the fish when the lake returns as well as keep unwanted plants that will encourage and support the DNR and DEQ's desires to return the lake bed to its natural habitation, that of wetlands and swamp. The lake bed is already turning green, once the wetlands habitat returns it will become almost impossible to convince these departments that rebuilding the damn is warranted. Move fast on getting the damn rebuilt or get used to living next to a swamp. A major initiative is required to save your lakeside properties, organize and get approved a huge wild rice planting on the lake bed asap. Plow under the plants that are already starting to return you once beautiful view into a wetlands swamp, cultivate wild rice. Sanford damn is much more likely to be rebuilt due to it "protecting" Midland from flooding, Edenville damn is not seen as helping in flood control, the exact opposite is true. Start now while you can.

What are we looking at? Is the engine room in the little building flooded and that water pouring out the window on the other side? This video sure could have done with some explanation. PS the truck that brought the stones didn't do a great job.. those rocks only help the situation when they are dumped IN that hole the water is making in the earthen dam on the side of the building, together with quite a lot more of them. The way the truck driver laid them in the road only makes it that much harder to shove them into that hole later on.

By the look of all that Steel wall piling thats been put along most of the Earth Dam etc a lot of work was/is going on to reinforce this Dam and I think the Generator station has been de-comissioned[temporily maybe?] So I'm thinking as this is the most up river of the three dams The State might have started putting right all the back maintainence and improvements that the Power company that owned the dam did not do. Logically starting on this dam first because if it failed the whole River would flood was a good decision and I assume only so much money each year was/is available because there is no way to make up for years of neglect and deferred maintainence by the Power company in less than 5 Years!

Agree. The steel pilings along this dam made it so that it is in the best shape of any on the 4 lakes, from my understanding.

Recommend “when” is the key thing. Back when this dam was designed, the engineers had no idea that the carrying capacity of the atmosphere would triple due to the magnetic pole shift dragging humid southern air northward as the north pole moves toward the Indian ocean. The next 20-30 years are going to be VERY “interesting”...

@@roofieandraggy16 when you take a dozer near a raging flood water stream and a eroding and degrading dam wall like that, let me know. otherwise, please recuse yourself with political shit as comparison. dont get me wrong, that would be brave. but we are not talking about a active shooter here. stick to the topic. putting that much weight that close to the high velocity water stream and the already weakened dam wall like that not knowing the conditions directly underneath them, is exponentially risky, and would be pretty much the death of that dozer operator if the wall collapsed or gave way dragging him and the dozer into the water and sucked him into the rapids. the dump truck driver is also at risk, is probably just as heavy if not heavier than the dozer itself. do some research on foundation erosion particularly around old and poorly maintained dams.

@davidbudka1298
@davidbudka1298 4 жыл бұрын
Stephen Hunter exactly. They are referred to as turbine flumes or wheel pits. I believe the Edenville Dam has (had) a different arrangement, utilizing horizontally shafted turbines. To find out about the construction of these small hydroelectric stations you need to find books like Hydraulic Turbines by Daugherty, Water Turbines by Daugherty and International Correspondence Schools, or catalogues by S. Morgan Smith Company, Fitz Water Wheel Company, or James Leffell and Company. General Electric also had a Bulletins outlining what was required for their small water wheel turbine driven generators. Some of these small hydroelectric power plants were just a step up from a water powered merchant’s mill utilizing early iron turbines.

All of the Dams are in disrepair and were built of the wrong materials. They were cheaply built and perhaps this was done because of the ignorance and naivety of those engineers who thought this was the way to build dams.....perhaps the knowledge base was not as advanced as it is today and things could have been done a little differently. Who knows anymore! All I can say is there goes all of our Nation's water supply!
