Within the corporate limits of the City of Tampa there exists a structure that is as unique in its conception and history as any in the city and indeed, in the entire state of Florida. Its story is rich and fascinating and just like the story of Tampa, it abounds in drama. It was part of Tampa’s coming of age at the end of the 19th century, it has survived natural and man-made threats to its existence, it has undergone numerous transformations, and it unwittingly proved that the law of unintended consequences can play a major role in the development of a city. The structure that we are referring to is the City’s Municipal Water Supply Dam on the Hillsborough River.
