From Punk to Goth to somewhere in between, this is The Damned Retrospective!
And yes, I am aware I made a mistake about Thatcher being in power in '77 when she wasn't elected until '79. I for some reason thought that her reign of terror started earlier than that. My apologies.

The Damned aren't just the greatest UK punk group, but also one of the all-time best rock 'n' roll bands. Rat Scabies drumming was Keith Moon on speed, and Vanian's vocals and image was simply brilliant. The guitar playing of Captain Sensible (and earlier Brian James) was/is phenomenal. And the songs...It's very unfortunate that the band members have had such chaotic personal relationships and that the band never received the profound rock recognition they deserved. In '93, I was a 12 year old kid in Wisconsin. On a school trip to Madison, WI I picked up "Skip Off School To See the Damned: Stiff Singles A's & B's" and it changed my life...I will forever be indebted to the Damned and as far as I'm concerned "Machine Gun Etiquette", "The Black Album", and "Strawberries" are amongst the finest records of the dawn of the 80s and are to the present basically timeless...

One last thought. I saw them in the late 90's with Vanian, Sensible, Monty, Patricia, and Pinch. I'm handicapped, but despite my wife's warnings, I got into the mosh pit. I nearly got stomped to death. I laughed and said, "I'm going to die listening to Captain Sensible!"

Dave’s voice to me was always the most consistently excellent voice in U.K. punk, rock, and every other style they sported. It’s rare that any other band kept growing from that period. They were the best at covering 60’s tunes and also keeping their sound fresh with a never ending roster of cool original music. While the the Pistols and Clash were perhaps held as the Titans, the Damned were able to outlast them.

This was brilliant! 4 stars! I've been a fan since 1980 till today. I'm a New Yorker that seen them in CBGB's to clubs like the Ritz for the Phantasmagoria tour at the Ritz in 85. In 89 I was in a band that covered alot of the Damned. It was odd that so many people thought we were doing originals. Bar crowds in NYC or NJ had no clue about the Damned. My fave story is seeing them on the Young Ones. We videotaped it on VHS. We all sat down around the t.v. with a remote and learned that song in a few views. We hit the basement and we added that to our set list. The Damned would be a part of the sound track to my life. They meant that much! I thank you for producing a solid, pure look into the Damned's history. One thing left out is the fact they made it to Madison Square Garden in NYC with The Misfits. I was damn proud to see my favorite, longest going , influential punk band get an arena spotlight! Keep up the great work amigo. I still have my tix stubs from 84 on for the Damned!

I'm a 50 yr old who's loved their music since i was 14. Every album has had a period of being the most played album. It also took me 30 yrs to realize Machine Gun Etiquette's musical variety made it the most punk album they released and their best album (not one bad song). I heard no mention about Burglar, Suicide, Torture. All fine songs where the band captured the emotion and the moods behind the lyrics through their playing. I'd be keen to read your thoughts.

Seemed to forget Captain's single for Crass during the solo bit. That was important because it linked the side of punk that had become Oi! as it's fans had a lot of respect for The Damned, with the politics of Crass releases, which was a bone of contention. Good record, too.

I just finish watching The Damned documentary (here on KZfaq) "Don't You Wish We Were Dead" and the best part came near the end, in which former drummer Rat Scabies was asked what was the legacy of The Damned and he believed that the band was never accepted. That is quite telling considering that everybody in the world (including me) feels that they don't get respect; and there were British groups in the 1970's and 80's (Japan, The Slits, and of course The Sex Pistols) that were of perfect exception.

dam dude, this was one of the greatest docs on the Damned ever. you really did your research.. we all appreciate it. I was born winning the decade lottery. 1-0 in the 70's, 11-21 in the 80's. Discovered hardcore in the "minor threat" days.. angry samoans, RKL, Angry samoans, circle jerks, etc. I used to watch "the young ones" and they featured "the damned-video nasty" and I blew up inside. I was so melodic and I could hear the internals of what the damned were. Went through all the albums and unlike many fans of their earlier work, I really REALLY like phantasmagoria. To me it was still the damned, but like on an acid trip. The core load bearing structure of the groups emotion was still there. sometimes a little sappy but it was for a different side of me. played that album to the core. They came to my town somewhere in the mid-late 80s. I was prepared to see a stage covered in fog and vanian in a dark long coat and candleobras on the stage. They just bran sensible back and it was a hardcore true to their core show. I was blown away. They sounded so good and SO tight. managed to see them in LA bout 7 years ago and it was amazing. show was so amazingly tight. They wrapped the show but for the encore played video nasty and a force took me over and like some caffeinated zombie I landed in the skank pit. Lost a shoe and my glasses but boy, what a ride home that was. glad we have these memories. life is short.. be kind to each other

Thank you so much for posting this. The Damned and Siouxsie And The Banshees are my two favourite bands from the UK Punk scene of the late 1970's, and I always felt like The Damned never really received the credit they deserved, people always talk about the Clash or the Pistols and it seems like the Damned are an afterthought which is unfair. Damned Damned Damned, is a great debut album and while I was never that keen on Strawberries then there was Machine Gun Etiquette which I think was their best early album. To this day they continue to make interesting music.

I immediately forgot, got mixed up and listened to all kinds of 70s-80s band documentaries with no luck. When youtube recommended this for me, a bell rang in my head. After 51 minutes, I heard it. This probably took a lot of work to put together.

Excellent video. Having been a Damned fan since the 70's I do feel like a lot of people that they were slightly overlooked compared to say the Sex Pistols and The Clash at the time and were treat as outsiders (a bit like The Stranglers) for not towing the (punk) line. But like The Clash they were not afraid to experiment and evolve musically, which is probably why they've enjoyed such longevity.

They came out to Australia this year and I can tell you right now that Captain is God tier on the guitar. He needs to feature in the greatest guitarist conversations way more than he is. Very well done, really thorough and engaging and much more accurate than a lot of the news coverage of the reunion! You're wrong about Anything, though... (-;

Between 1974 and 1979 when the punk movement came to fruition, GB was ruled by labour leader Harold Wilson, from 1974 until 1976. And then by labour leader James Callaghan from 1976 to 1979. Now, as a Dutchman I have no bone in the political fights in the UK. But Britain was not ‘a hellhole that was Thatcher England’ when the first Damned single or album were released. But ‘a hellhole that was labour England since 1974’. Just saying. Oh, and I love The Damned. I saw them live on Friday 14 October 1977 at the Effenaar in Eindhoven. Absolutely fantastic.

Quality mate, great job 👏👏 FYI there seems to be a Cpt. Sensible release that you have missed, it was released under the Crass label and is an E.P. called 'This is your Captain Speaking. It is his first collaboration with 'the dolly mixtures' and is by far his best solo stuff, enjoy 😁 Like deployed 👍

I've been a huge fan since i first heard plan 9 right after it had come out. At the time i was 11 and loved all music that sounded good to me. Didnt take long before i caught shit for liking punk. I grew up way out in the country on a farm, so the highlight of the week was friday night and going to the mall, its all any young kid had and the only record store within an hour. Somehow they had a great punk collection mixed in with everything. Once i bought Machine Gun Etiquette, it was on. Fantstic retrospective. I have to admit, i usually dont watch retrospective when o see some cat and a mic since it ends up 55 minutes of his opinions and 5 minutes of footage. Good work.

8:50 I’m not sure of the correlation between New Rose (released in ‘76) and Thatcher’s U.K. (she came to power in ‘79). Politically speaking, punk was originally a reaction against the view of nihilistic, no hope Great Britain which was under the administration of the Labour Party, who oversaw the U.K’s “Winter of Discontent”. The Damned were honest with their desire for loads of cash, while The Clash promoted socialist values.

Enjoyed this, the damned were always my favourites. I first heard them New Year 1976/77. A freind had the single, when I heard it I fell in love. One slight correction. Thatcher was 4 years away when the Damned released New Rose. It was a grim time though

Great vid, thanks for the effort, you know your stuff. I've loved these guys since the begining and you packed in a lot in a just over an hour. Agree that MGE is probably tops, I also love The Black Album which was important to my life at the time. One thing that also comes to mind is that they've done some fantastic cover versions, many of them better than the originals, they should really do a covers album just for fun. BTW, The Rockfield Files was topping the download chart yesterday!

Never mind the Thatcher inaccuracy, you did a great job, really enjoyed your work.......... Love The Damned, you used the word 'interesting' a few times, they were......... saw them live a bunch of times, through the years........... Big shows at famous venues, to community centre/church hall type gigs, always worth the money........... Entertainment, that's what you got, + plenty of it......... They certainly deserve OBEs, services to music ........... They're a national treasure, no doubt about that................
