The Dan Harmon Story Circle Plot Structure (and how to use it)

Dan Harmon - creator of Rick and Morty, HarmonQuest, and my favorite sitcom of all time, Community - has a structure for telling good stories. This is how I teach my creative writing students to use that structure to tell bettter tales right off the bat.

One thing that unlocked for me was that all the characters can have their own structure.

I personally don't like the monomyth and its derivates. To be honest, I think they are something like a conspiracy theory, people want to see a pattern and worse think that using that as basis for outlining a story would lead to good fiction. I like how Douglas A Burton calls the Hero's Journey the Soldier's journey and offered a counter framework with the Heroine's Labyrinth. Sure, that also has the flaw of maybe existing only in patterns he wants to find, but at least he is not simply following the same boring structure that people value far too highly.

true and valid point. But most readers don't really care about the structure. It's more about the effect, and it so happens that it works. I think of it like there's a certain way to ride a bike, but within that, with experience and practice, you can do all kinds of tricks and stunts. For a beginner, these structures are great for plot development.

Don't go too fast, now. I'm just getting to the point where I'm not embarrassed when comparing our numbers. I've been devouring manga by the boatload recently, btw. I still think we should collab.
